IMPROVEMENT 1N BuRHGLAR-ALARMS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,210, dated February 25, 1873.

`,To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY L. BROWER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Burglarlarm, of which the following is a specification:

My invention consists of a small, light, portable, and ornamental alarm or call-bell, so contrived that the devices forrestraining or holding the clock-mechanism used for act- A"uating the bell-hammer in check will be caused to release the said mechanism and allow it to act, if the alarm be lifted from the ttable or other support, or if a knob be lifted -or pulled, or turned to the right or lel't, so that the alarm will be useful in banks and other places to protect papers or other va1uables temporarily, simply by being placed on lithem; also, for a burglar-alarm by attaching small'threads or cords to the knob, and arranging said -threads so that the opening of a Window or door, or the passing through A:an open Adoor or window, or other passage by a person will, by his coming againstthe cords or threads pull the knob or turn it, and

' thereby set the alarm in motion; also, for a {ire-alarm by having weights or springs let go lby the burning of the threads to pull or turn the knob and liberate the sounding mechanism, all as hereinafter described.

Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of my improved alarm taken on the line .v w of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is aplan View; and Fig. 3 is a partial transverse section taken on the line y y of Fig. 2.

A is a small metal or other case of any suitable form or size, inclosed at the sides and top, but open at the bottom, containing a bell, B, bell-hammer C, and a clock mechanism, D, for actuating the hammer, allot' which may Vbe constructed and arranged in any approved Way. D is a stop or detent for holding the arm of the bell-hammer in check, and for being raised to liberate the hammer to 'allow it to sound the alarm, by the lifting of the ap- -paratus from-the table or other object or objects whereon it may rest, or by pulling or "turning the knob-spindle, as aforesaid. sents a couple of inclined vplanes arranged on this spring reversely to each other. G is an arm projecting from a spindle, H, at right angles thereto, the said spindle projecting downward through the top of the case and a base piece, I, from a knob, K, for which the base I is provided as a rest, the said spinf dle being capable of oscillating right and left onits axis, also of moving up and down a short distance. This arm G ranges under the springl), or on that side which is in the direction of the movement of the spring when it engages the bell-hammer, which is also the -side whereon the inclines F are arranged, so

that by the oscilla-tion of the knob and its spindle in either direction, the detent will be moved v'away from the arm of the bell-ham mer and liberate it by the action of the arm G on the inclines, and it will move back and check the said bell-hammer when the knob and'V spindle are turned to the front where the inclines meet, as represented in Fig. l. The spring will also be raised and the bell-hammer liberated by pulling the knob and spindle upward by the action ofthe arm G, which Will lift the spring.

In order to cause the sounding ofthe alarm by lifting the apparatus off its seat on aI table, pile `of papers, or other objects. a spring, L, anda lever, M, are combined with the spring E, so as to lift the detent away from the bellhammer, when not prevented, and a short rod or pin, N, is arranged in a suitable support, O, and in connection with the lever M, so that when the case is set on the table the rod is pushed up and prevents the lever M from acting on the spring E; it also lifts the y spring L, so that immediately on Jthe lifting of the case from the table said spring will force 'the spring L up through the medium of theJ lever M, and thereby liberate the bellhammer.

'.lhe cords used when the instrument is to be employed as a burglar-alarm will be attached to the rings of the knob so as to turn it when they are pulled, or they may be at tached to the top so as to lift it. Vhen used as a call-bell, the knob is lifted to liberate the bell-hammer.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to'secure by Letters Patent- 1. The dcrenfJ D, spring E, inclined planes and arranged with respect to the alarm 'mechanism in the case A, to operate substantially' as and for the purpose described.

2. The combination, with spring E, of the spring L, lever M, and pin N, as and for the purpose described.
