Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 11, 1916. Serial No. 71,515.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGEN DOLENSKY, subject of the Austrian Empire, residing at Frankfort-on-theMain, Germany, Ktirnen strasse No. 6, have invented new and useful Improvements in Generators for Producing Water-Gas, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved generator for producing water-gas by the intermittent method, in which the connection between the generator and the purifying tank is free from mechanical closing contrivances.
Another object is to provide a water-gas producer, provided with a valveless pipe connection between the generator and purifier, and air blast connection in said pipe connection together with means to prevent the air blast from passing into the purifier.
Another object is to provide a water-gas producer with a simultaneous control for the purge-valve, the injector and the airblast.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawings one form of construction of the improved generator is represented.

Referring now to the drawings in detail, the generator shaft or chamber S is provided at the bottom with the usual heating opening I), and at the top with the usual purge-valve or gas clapper a, in the middle of which is arranged the steam injector 9. At the top of the generator is the ordinary steam producer p, connected with the steam injector by a pipe 1', provided with a cock 9. Adjacent the generator is the usual gas purifying tank, which is connected thereto by the gas pipe cZ, having a downturned bend it terminating substantially at the bottom of the gas tank below the water therein. Substantially midway between the generator and the tank the gas pipe at is provided with a valve 6, to which is connected the air-blast pipe 0, and to this air-blast pipe is connected the air pump m. Arranged in the air pipe 0, between the valve and the source of air pressure, is a branch pipe. At its base the purifying tank is provided with a partition adapted to provide a narrow section open at the top to the atmosphere and the pipe 1 projects downwardly thereinto, terminating slightly above the level of the submerged depth of the gas pipe d in the tank, whereby air escaping from the pipe 1 may escape up through the water in the divided-off tank section into the atmosphere. Arranged in the valve casing e is a suitable valve provided at the top with a connection passing through a stufling box, said connection being attached to the short end of a lever f pivoted on the side wall of the generator, the other end of said lever being in easy reach of the operator. Midway its ends the lever is provided with an arm adapted to be attached to another lever, the latter being connected to a shaft arranged at the top of the generator. This shaft has connection with the steam cock 9, and the purge-valve (2, whereby as the shaft is turned the valve and cook are simultaneously operated with the air valve 6, at the lower end of the lever 7.
In operation, when the lever f is raised, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the purge-valve a is closed and the cock 9 opened, whereby steam is injected into the generator, at the same time theair-valve e is closed, so that the gas from the generator passes into the purifier by the pipe (Z. As soon as the lever 7 is lowered, the purgevalve is opened, the steam injection cut-off, and the air-valve e opened. The operator now sets in motion the air pump which forces air through the air pipe 0 past the valve 6 into the gas pipe (Z, and thence into the generator, which is then on blast. No air will enter the gas purifier, because the resistance offered to the air flow by the generator is less than that presented by the water seal at the terminal of the gas pipe it. However, should the air tend to pass into the gas tank, the pipe 1 will permit the air to escape into the atmosphere since the pres sure at the base of the pipe 1 is less than that at the mouth of the pipe it, due to difference in submergence levels. of the above arranged device an operator can by merely raising or lowering the lever f simultaneously control the purge-valve, the steam injection and the air-blast valve. Furthermore, such a device has great advantages over the usual devices of this sort provided with mechanical valveswhich are exposed to the clogging action of the tar and other substances.
l/Vhat I claim as my invention is:
1. A water gas producer, a generator,*a purifier provided with a water-receptacle at its bottom, part of saidwater-receptacle being-open, at its top, to the atmosphere a gaspipe connecting the generator and purifier and provided with an anglediterminal proje'cting below the level 'ofthe Water. in said water-receptacle, whereby, under normal conditions, theair=b1ast will pass into the generator and not into the purifier, :an airpipe connected with .said gas=pipeanid leading from a source of pressure, wand-"means foripreventing a'inpassing into the purifier on the occurrence 01f excess pressurelin sai'd air-pipe, comprising a. branch'pip'e connected with said air-pipe and projected slightly below the level of the water in the part of said water-receptacle open to the atmosphere.
2. A water gas producer, comprising a generator and a. purifier tank provided with a water receptacle at the base thereof, a "valveless gas pipe connecting with the generator and with the purifier tank and extending beneath the Water therein, and an air-blast pipe connecting with the gas pipe whereby the air-blast will pass into the generator and not intothe purifier tank under normal conditions. 7
