AM. PHoro-urHoGRAFH/c ca Mx(0s5on -sfs mocfss) UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN MURPHY, 'or NEw YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR GRINDING HARVESTER-KNIVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,171, dated February 25, 1873.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I,'JOHN MURPHY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Machines for Grinding Knives for Mowing- Machines, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to provide for and construct a machine for grinding knives for mowing-machines with greaterfacility and with more exactness and equality than has been done heretobefore.
In order to describe my invention, I will refer to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.vv
Figure I is a front view of a machine embodying my invent-ion. Fig. II is a side view of the same. Fig. III is a detached view of the support for the knife.
A is a frame, on which the table B is supported. C is' a vertical round bar, held and fastened to the table B by aid ofthe plate a and the screws c c. A spiral spring, b, is slid over l the vertical bar C, on the top of which is placed the piece D, which is held in the requisite direction by aid of the set-screw d working in the groove e. On the same bar U is placed over D the piece E having a set-screw f, in order to prevent the piece D from being forced beyond that point by the spring b. To the piece D is pivoted at g the segment F, to which the two horizontal arms or bars G Gr are attached. The slot t' is cut into the seg ment F; a pin, j, placed in the' piece D and working into the slot i, serves to allow the segment F to be given the required position for grinding the knife. On the two bars Gr G is placed .the segment H, into which a recess, K, is made in the same line with the guides -I I, on which the knife is placed. An emery or grindstone disk, J, is placed on the table under the bars G Gr, and is made to revolve on the axle K, which rests in the bearings l l. To this axle is fastened the friction-wheel L, which receives its motion from the driving or fi y wheel M, operated by the crank N, treadle O, and connectionrod I?.
Anybody familiar with the grinding of edge tools will see at a glance how the machine operates. Amowing-machine knife,R,is laid on the guides I I with the back against the recess K. 'Ihe emery or grindstone disk being set in motion, either by the treadle, as here shown, or in any other manner, the knife is given the required angle or pitch and drawn forward and backward against the stone, at the same time pressing the knife against the stone.
Practice has demonstrated that this mode of grinding mower-knives is far superior to any other before used or known, and a great saving in labor and time is eected by the aid of this machine. l
Having thus described my invention, I desire to claim- The bar C'with groove e, spiral spring b, adjustable collar D with set-screw d, collarE with set-screwf, segment F, bars G G, slot i, pin j, segment H, recess K, and guides I, in combination with the emery or grindstone disk J, frame A, table B, friction-wheel L, driving-wheel M, crank N, and treadle O, substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
J OHN MURPHY.
