Specification of Letters Patent. Pat nt d 7, 1 2
Application filed August 9, 1919'. Serial-No. 316,398.
To an whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. Ross, a
in connection with the accompanying drawings in which:
citizen of the United States, and'residin at\ 151g. 1 is a side elevation of a paper or 'Jersey City, Hudson county, State of ew Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Containers, of which the following is a specificatlon.
This invention relates to'containers ha vi ing paper board bodies and the purpose of the invention is'to securely connect a metal top to the container with the least possible expense. Such containers are used in very large quantities foitpacking and shipping dry material and to some extent for liquids and it has been customary to supply the cheapest grade with paper caps or ends, and the somewhat better grade with one or two metal ends, the metal b'eingsecured to the usual cylindrical bodyby crimping it onto or otherwise interlocking the metal and the paper. It has. heretofore required expen-v sive machinery to' attach metal tops to the paper or cardboard bodies and in the operation of attaching the tops the paper is so mutilated that the top will not remain permanently attached unless a high grade and expensive paper or cardboard is used. By the present invention-it is possible to secure a metal top of any approved type to a pasteboard body without mutilating or damaging the body in any way, the top serving to strengthen the body rather than to weaken it. Furthermore, the top can be attached to the body Without any machinery other than devices now commonly used for attaching labels. I accomplish this by perforating or otherwise cutting away the flange of the top to expose parts of the body of the receptacle and pressing the label through the perforations or openings in the top into contact with the body whereby the top is securely locked to the body.
The top may be of any type' desired. For instance it may have a central closure of the friction top type, as shown in Figure 1 of the accompanying drawing, or it may be a perforated top for sprinkling substances, such as spices, talcum and the like. Any of the common kinds of tin or sheet metal tops can be applied without expense for the application to the container, provided the flange of the top is perforated so that it may be interlocked with the body in the operation of pasting on the usual label.
The invention will be more fully described away of still another form of the invention.
' 14 therein for a purpose to be presently depasteboard container having a 'metal top constructed and attached according to the 0 present invention, parts being'shown in sectlon; v I -Fig. 2 is an enlargement of a part of Fig. 1; I ig. 3 is a side elevation of a top or cap of modified form;
Fig. 1 is a similar elevation partly broken away of another form of the invention;
Fig. 5 is a side elevation partly broken Referring to the drawings, 10 indicates the body of a cylindrical paper container which may be of any usual construction, and 11 indicates the bottom of the container which may be of paper having its flange glued or pasted to the outside of the body. The top 12 is of sheet metal, preferably tin, and is provided with a flange 13 having a series of openings or perforations scribed. The circular part of the top may be of any usual construction, either a plain top or a perforated top for dispensing powdered material, or a removable disk 15 held by friction in the central opening in the top 12, as shown in Fig. 1.
The flange 13 is cylindrical and adapted to closely fitthe outer surface of the end of the body 10 and to lie parallel therewith, the wall of the body being exposed through the openings 14. After thetop is applied the usual label 16 is placed on the carton or container in the usual way, with paste, and portions of it extend through the openings 14 and adhere securely to the wall of the by paste. Fig. 3 illustrates a modified form of cap having a flange 17 provided in its lower edge with dove-tailed openings 18. A label applied in the manner above described will extend through the openings 18 and become securely connected to the body of a container, thus interlocking the top or cap to the container.
Fig. 4 illustrates a diifere nt form in which the openings 19 in the flange 20 are elliptical, the operation being the same as illustrated in Fig. 1. Fig. 5 illustrates a paper carton or container 21 having a cap 22 provided with a flange 23, the flange having at its lower edge a bead or projection 21. In this case the paper label or cover 25 is pasted to the body 21 and projects over the bead 24 engaging the flange 23 and while the paper will not adhere satisfactorily to the metal it will shrink in drying and be drawn tight over the bead 24, thus securing the metal cap to the body of the 'container.-
It will be apparent that the foregoing invention has many advantages over ,con-
'tainers' as at present manufactured. A tin heretofore it has been necessary to include expensive machinery to attach the to s to the containers and to have a variety 0 dies or tools to attach the tops to different sized containers, and by the present invention I am able to-avoid thisexpense. It will be apparent that packages provided with these improved tops can be filled before the tops are applied, thus providing an o 'enin of I the ful diameter of the package or fil ing. It will be seen that in each form of the device illustrated in the drawings the body or wall of the container, and particularly that portion engaged by'the, flange of the top is straight-and rigid and that the depending flange' on the top is also straight so that the top is retained on the body principally by reason of the engagement of the wrapper with the body through the unobstructed openings in the flange or the interlocking of the wrapper and the flange.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. A container havin a non-metallic body provided with a 'straig 1t rigid portion and a metal top having a straight depending flange surrounding and closely fitting the said straight portion of the body and lying parallel therewith, said flange having openings therein, and a wrapper pasted over the body and over the flange of the top, the top being secured to the body by portions of the Wrapper extending through the openings in the flange and adhering to the body.
2. A container comprising a cylindrical paper body having a straight rigid portion, a metal top having a straight depending flange surrounding and closely fitting the paper body having a straight rigid portion,
a sheet metal top having a straight cylindrical depending flange surrounding and closely fitting the outer surface of, the straight portion of the body and lying parallel 'therewith, said flange having unobstructedv perforations therein, and a wrapper or label pasted to the body and having a portion overlapping the flange of the top and connected to the body through said perforations.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
