I' Specification of Letters Patentf -Patnted Dec"l 7, 1920.
Application led December 3,1918. SerialNo. 265,125.
and useful Improvements in Magnetos, of
`which the following is a specification.,`
My resent invention relates to improveing a stationary `winding permanently connected tothe circuit and in which current is induced through the 'coaction of vrelatively stationary field magnets and rotors or inductors.
I have aimed `to provide an extremely simple, economical, durable and eflicient form'of magneto embodyingk a Casin comprisinga plurality of parts readiy assembled and disassembled in manufacture and repair. y,
I have further aimed kto provide a casing .supported from acradle on ball `bearings so that the advance' and retardation of the spark may be'effected by the rocking of the magneto casing as a whole.
Another object is to provide a construction which may be readily lchanged for rotation in either direction `without changing any of the parts.
Again I haveaimedto provide a form of housing of novel shapeJ carrying the breaker or interrupter and the distributer, the movvingvparts ofwhich may be driven from the ma neto shaft through bevel or worm gears.
' have further aimed to provide pole` pieces of improved'form; and animproved.
form of breaker or-v interrupter and cover therefor embodying a safety lock, f
`With thesel and other objects in view which will'hereinafter appear, theinvention includes the novel features of construction and arrangement and combination of paits hereinafter described and defined KAby the'appended claims.'
An embodiment of which Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section through the magneto.Ik Fig. 3 is a section on line of Fig. Fig 4 is a diagrammatic view-illustrating the circuits.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the breaker or my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings inl moved. A Fig. 6 isa detail view of the -breaker or interrupter. Fig. 7 is an inside view of thebreaker 60 cover showing the safety lock.
Fig. Sis a detail of the distributer, and, Fig.` 911s a perspectivedetail of one of the pole pieces.-
.Re erring by reference characters'to thisI 65 drawing, the 'numeral .l designates a cradle interrupter, the breaker -cover being reor frame having a suitable base portion def signed to be secured in any convenient inan ner and 4which is'provided at each end with i upsta-ndingportions provided with cylindrical bearing portions indicated at la, the
upper halves of the bearing portions being removable for convenience of assembly.
The numeral 2 designates the magneto ca siiig as a whole which comprises fourA parts, to wit, a main portion 2l carrying the field magnet or magnets and pole piecesfa portion 2b carrying the breaker and ydistributer and condenser, and the end caps 2 and 2d respectively. These respective parts 80 areprovided with interlocking edges `as clearly shown in Fig. lso that when assembled they are held in proper relation and alinement and the end` caps. are provided with extensions, 3 and 5, which-are mounted 85 to oscillate in the bearing portion la of the cradle.
The casing is preferably constructed of brass and I find it desirable to form the eX- tension 3 inthe shape of a steel ring liav- 90 ing annular flanges 3a resting in an annular channel or rabbet in the end cap and secured in position by screws 3b.
Interposed between cylindrical extension 3 and the bearing portion 1a of the cradle 95 as an antifriction bearing .which may conveniently compriseinner and outer bearin @this bo'ssland the bearing portion of' the' 105 cradle.
The magneto shaft is designated 6 and is rotatably mounted within and supported b, the endv caps through the interposed ball bearings 7i 110 The shaft is projected at one end through the cylindrical boss or extension 3 and is provided with means for attachment of a drive gear or the like (not shown) such, means being shown as a tapered portionlta and screwthrea-ded extension 6b. The bear-Q. ings at either end may be protected by dust caps 8.
Pinned or otherwisesecured to the shaft within the portion 2n of the casing are a pair of 'diametrically arranged rotors 9 which have cylindrical core extensions 1() extending toward each other which revolve within the stationary winding 11. These rotors coaetwit1 the pole pieces 12 of the magneto which preferably comprise two pairsof inner and outer magnets as shown in Figs. 1 and The pole pieces are set in openings formed in opposite sides ofthe casing portion 2a and may be conveniently secured therein by casting said portion around the pole pieces, and the arms of the magnets are secured to the pole pieces by I grooved to provide coacting points.
screws as shown in Fig. 2 or by any otherconvenient means.
Each pole piece, as shown in Fig. 9, com- `prises a pair of end portions 12Z1 thickened and curved on their inner faces to conformto the path of rotation of the rotors, and a connecting web 12b.
The winding 11 as above stated is stationary, and comprises an inner primary coil or winding llband an outer secondary windc' ing 112 inclosed within an insulated casing 11-,one end of the primary coil being groundedand the other end being connected to the interrupter and condenser 13 as in'- dicated in the diagrammatic view Fig. 4, in which the heavy lineindicates the primary winding. y The secondary coil or winding 11c is connected to the primary winding and to thedistributer indicated at 14 from which the current is conveyed to the spark plugs in.v
the customary manner. A
I. prefer to .secure tothe end of the secondary winding 11C a copper strip 11l which contacts with the carbon contact 15 seated in an opening in the insulating casing 11a. This insulated casing is provided with a boss or projection 11X having an inclined wall which is engaged by the flaring mouth of a tubular insulating bushing or sleeve 416 which passes through an opening in the magneto casing and is held in position by a spring arm 17 pivotally connected at one end to the casing by screw 18 and havingv a laterallydisposed forked portion at the opposite. end adapted to overlie a shoulder 16a on the bushing 16. By swinging the l spring arm 17 laterally the bushing may be removed. The screw 18 may also -serve as the ground connection for the primary winding.
' The bushing 16 carries a binding post 18 reifiee havinga' tubular bore at its lower end within which is'slidably mounted a secondcar- `bon contact 19 which is pressed downwardly by a spring 20.
, The binding post is connected to the conductor leading to the distributer in any approved manner. To provide a safety gap in case any spark plug is inactive I connect to the binding post a spring contact arm 21"the free end of which bears against the headiof a contact member 22 preferably removably seated in an opening in` an insulator cap-or bushing 23 carried by an annular iiange 24 on the magneto casing, a part of the wall is cut away for ventilation purposesand is covered by reticulated material 24a of sufficient fineness to prevent ignition of any gasolene vapors that might surround themagnetofThe lower end of the contact member 22 is provided with spark points or terminals properly spaced from the headv of a screw 25 set into the casing, the head of the screw being cross l preferably arrange' in the same 'plane transversely of the casing and they rotate 0n axes that converge in the axis of the main drive shaft 6.
One of these shafts (13a) has a bevel gear 26 fast on its lower end which meshes with a bevel gear 27 onl the magneto shaft 6. "l
Shaft 13a carries a second bevel gear 2S which mesheswith a ybevel gear 29 on the shaft 14a.
rl`hese shafts 13a and 141 are preferably journaled in suitable bushings as clearly shown in Fig. 3. p
Within the bottom of the chamber formed by the annularwall or extension 2X is located the vbreaker disk 30 which .is of ring form as shown in Figs. 3 and 5, and is re-,
33 carried bythe ring and contacts at its v opposite or free end with the adjustable con- .tac't screw 34 carried by a lug 35?L of the arc shaped bar 35- secured ,to the breaker plate but insulated therefrom. The opposite end of the-bar 35 is provided with a vertical tubular projection 35" which carries a slid- Vmediate portion of the breaker arm is designed to coact with the cam 38 carried by 'ing contact plunger -36 projecting through y .screw 34 by'a spring 39, one-endof which is secured to the breaker arm while its other end bears against a lixed post or pin 40. Thev contact plunger 36 -is forced downi ward by a spring 4l and this spring also acts atits upper end on the lower end of a sliding Contact 42 held in the upper end of tubular projection 35". This slidingcontact 42 is designed to coact ywitha contact member 43 on the breaker covery44, being provided with a' binding post 45` designed to 'be connected by a wire (not shown) with the usual short circuitin switch on the dash of the automobile. improved breaker housing cover is designed as 'a safety ycover and is arranged so as to enablel the magneto to be locked on the housing in short circuited position. f
f To thisvend I provide the cover with radially movable locking pin 46 designed to engage an opening or recess in the corresponding portion of the breaker housing which pin is normally 'pressed inward out o fpengagement with said recess by 'a spring 46a. A cross bar or yoke 47 is swiveled to the inner side of the coverand is provided with a pin 47a designed to be acted upon by a lug or projection 48n on the lock barrel 48,
The yoke 47 has a cam shaped end de-y signed to coact with the head of the locking pin and force the latter outward into locking position as shown in Fig. 7 and whenin this position the opposite end of the yoke contacts with the post 43, thus short circuiting the magneto and preventing driving of the car.
The distributer per se may be of the ordinary or any desired .construction and as these are well understood by those skilled in the art specific description thereof herein is deemed unnecessary. l
It may be noted that by my arrangement of breaker and distributer on the casinfrgsection and the manner ofdriving them I can readily adapt the magneto to engines of any number 'of cylinders.
In the drawing I have shown it as adapted'for` a four cylinder engine, but if it be desired for a six cylinder, for example, it is only necessary to substitute a casing section 2b having the breakerand distributer shafts at a greater angle and enabling the-use of the proper larger sized gear. on the distributer shaft.
I preferably provide a dust cover 46 for excluding dust from the key opening when the key is removed, 'which cover may bein the form lof a key or plate'pivoted on the binding post 45 and provided with a knob o1' )rejection 46 for operating it. l
