PAUL REINWALD, OF MENLO PARK, CALIFORNIA.
rmvrronivi FOR WIND OW-WASHERS.
Application filed March 13,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, PAUL REINWALD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Menlo Park, county of San Mateo, and State of California, have invented a new and useful Platform for Window-Washers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to platforms for the use of window washers, and an object of the invention is to provide a safe light platform which is readily attached to and detached from the sill and casing of a window to permit easy access to the outside of the window.
The invention possesses other objects and features of advantage, some of which, with the foregoing, will be set forth in the following description of the preferred form of my invention which is illustrated in the drawings accompanying and forming part of the specification. It is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the showing made by the said drawings and description, as I may adopt variations of the preferred form within the scope of my invention as set forth in the claims.
Figure 1 is a plete platform.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through one of the cantaliver arms, the plane of section being taken through the lines 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig 3 is an elevation of a portion of the anchor bar of my device.
The device of my invention is'a means for providing a safe platform upon which a person may stand while washing the outside of windows. It is applicable to windows having sills of any width, but is especially suitable for use in connection with narrow sills such as are usually found in the small public buildings and in private homes. Although it facilitates the work to be done by providing a stable platform for both the worker and a pail, its chief value lies in the perfect security which it gives and the consequent avoidance of accident. It is applied to a window by merely pushing the assembled structure through the opening left by raising the lower sash, and requires no fittings or attachments secured to the casing or sill. In order to facilitate storage and carrying from place to place, it is formed of members which are readily separated and assembled.
The platform proper comprises a pair of perspective view of the com- I Specification of Letters Patent.

cantaliver arms 3 having vertical posts 4 secured at their outer ends. Preferably each post is mortised into the corresponding arm and reinforced by the angle bar 5 overlying the arm and portion of the post and secured thereto by screws. Another angle bar 6 is fixed at the top of each post and a railing comprising side rails 7 and front rail 8 which are independently fixed together is detachably arranged on the top of the posts by means of screws 9 passing through angle bars 6 and side rails 7 and secured by the wing nuts 11. A footing board 12 upon which the worker stands is similarly detachably engaged with the cantaliver arms by screws and wing nuts 13.
Fixed on the under side of each cantaliver arm in position to engage the slanting window sill 1 1 is a post 15, preferably cut to lie fiat on the sill. The posts transfer the downward thrust of the platform and its load to the sill, and it will be seen that stress on the cantaliver arms such as is caused by the presence of a load thereon, will tend to tip the arms downwardly about the outer edge 16 of the posts 15. Means are therefore provided to prevent the upward movement of the inner lever arm formed by that portion of the cantaliver on the inside of the posts 15, and thus stabilize the cantaliver arms and enable them to carry a load. On the end of each arm 3 is rigidly fixed a T-bar 17, the head of which is adapted to be inserted behind the plates 18 fixed on the anchor bar 19. The anchorbar is formed with recesses 20 to permit the T-bar heads to be placed behind the plates, and a plate 21 is hinged to the anchor bar and adapted to lie between the cantaliver arms to lock the T-bars in the recesses behind the plates 18. By removing the railing, and footing board and raising the plate 21, the cantaliver arms may be disengaged from the anchor bar. The anchor bar is faced with a layer of felt 22 about its ends.
.In order to prepare the parts are assembled as shown in Fig. 1 and pushed out of the window to the position shown in Fig. 2, the posts 15 resting on the outer edge of the sill and the anchor bar traversing the window casing, its padded ends bearing against the inside facing of the casing. In this position the cantaliver arms oannot rock about the edges 16 of the posts, since such motion must result in an upward sliding movement of the my device for use, 1
anchor bar on the WlIlClOW casing, accompanied by an inwardmovement of the posts. 7
ders this movement impossible, and the plat-- form is found perfectly stable.
I claim:
1. In a platformadapted to be extended from a Window, cantaliver arms, means for supporting said arms on the Window sill, an anchor bar for engaging the inside face of the Window casing, meansfor releasably attaching said arms to said bar, and a foot-.
ing board releasably arranged on said arms to provide a floor for the platform, and stop means on the anchor bar and between the arms to prevent the release of the arms from said anchor bar.
2. In a platform adapted to be extended from a Window, eantaliver arms, means for supporting said arms on the Window sill,
an anchor bar releasably attached to said arms for engaging the inside face of the WindoW casing, a footing board and a railing arranged on said arms, and a plate hinged Ihe slanting sill of the Window casing renon said bar to rest between said arms and prevent lateral movement and the release of the arms from said bar.
3. In apl'atform adapted to beextended from a Window, c'antaliver arms, mean'sfor supporting said arms on the Window sill, an anchor bar provided with recesses and fixed lock plates, and
Window casing, T-bars on said arms with heads, adapted to be inserted in the recesses and engaged behind said fixed hinged on said anchor bar for preventing the disengagement of said T-bars from said fixed leasably engaged With said arms,.-a post on each of said arms and a railing engaged with said post. 7 r
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand at San Francisco, California, this 5th day of March, 1919.
PAUL 'REINWALD.
