Description

.l. B. WHITCU MB. Carriage- Springs No. 136,116." v H Pate ntedib.18,1873.
I INVENRJR.
JWi/TNE 21a 7 UNITED STATES der c, which is held firmly and securely in rod b, so as to slide freely up and down upon 7 held between the coiled spring 13 and a rubber PATENT OFFICE.
J OHN B. WHITCOMB, OF BELOIT, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR OF TWO-THIRDS OF HIS RIGHT TO JOSEPH BRITTAN AND ARTHUR BBITTAN, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT m CARRIAGE-SPRINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,116, dated February 18, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN B. WHITOOMB, of the city of Beloit, county of Rock and State of Wisconsin, have invented-certain new and useful Improvements in Carriage Springs, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a combined clip and spring for after be more fully set forth.
In the accompanyingdrawing, Figure l is a side elevation of my invention, partly in section. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the cylinder, so as to show the slot.
(t represents an ordinary clip, having cast with or otherwise secured to it, upon its top, the rod I) having a screw-thread out upon its upper end. Over this rod is passed the cylinplace by a shoulder, d, and the nut e. In this cylinder, and around the rod, is the coiled spring i, which cases and lessens the jars upon the body of the buggy. Passing over the it, is the rod h, extending outward at right angles, and which is guided and controlled in its movements by the slot l in the side of the cylinder, and upon which the body of the buggy rests. The inner end of this rod h is spring or pad, a, so thata sudden jar or jerk upon the body is eased so as to be scarcely perceptible. In order to prevent a jar upon a violent downward movement of the body, when the rod h would reach' the end of the slot 1, I form a cup-shaped body on the side of the cylinder, in which is placed a rubber spring, 0, and upon which spring the rod it would strike.
This device, as above described, forms an exceedingly light, cheap, and durable spring for buggies and all other light vehicles, and one which can be easily repaired by any artisan.
' I do not confine myself to the precise form and arrangement of the parts herein described, as they may be slightly varied without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The combination of 'the springs a 0, ar; ranged above and below the spring-bar, so as to break the concussions, substantially as set forth.
2. The clip a, rods b 1, cylinder 0, springs i a 0, and nut 0, when all are combined and arranged as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I hereunto affix my signature this 30th day of December, 1872.
. J. B. WHITOQMB.
.Witnesses:
J. BRITTAN, W. M. BRITTAN.
