-Iand useful -held by an Be it known that I, JACOB H. STULL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fremont, in the county of Sandusky and State ofiOhio, have invented certain new Improvements in Lead-Pencils; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, suoli as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. This invention relates to lead-pencils, and it relates more specifically to an improved point projecting device in the' class of pencils inwhich the pencil-points or marking elements are 'movable outward by a manipulative or movable part of the pencil.
One obje-,ct of this invention is to generally improve upon devices of this character while providing an improved structure in whichthe pencil-points are projected and rately guided, in alinement with the pencil points, by a. collar which surrounds the elastic element.
Other objects and advantages may become apparent to persons Awho' read the followlng details of description in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pencil constructed according to the present invention.

The device comprises a casing 6 having a openlng or outlet 7 therein, said outlet consisting of a narrow bore or tubular Aelement in which a -pencilpoint or lead 8 is seated,
the bore of the outlet being frictionally engaged with the pencil-point' or lead so as toprevent it .from dropping out of the outlet 7, but being longitudinally movable in the outlet 7 so that it may be easily proelastic element which is accuderstood that this wire extends radially inward at 11, and it may radially inward at 12 for a purpose which will hereinafter appear.
Asleeve or annular guide 13 is secured by any suitable means to the inner surface "of the casing 6, and this sleeve is preferably "formed with an integral lug 14 which'extends radially inward between two helices of the coil 10, and said coil is slidably engaged with the inner surface of the sleeve 13, so that the coil may be rotated and moved longitudinally inthe sleeve. A ma- 'nipulative actuator 15 is formed with a barrel 15a which is rotatably mounted within the rear end of the casing 6, suitable means being provided, as indicated at 16, for preventing longitudinal movement of the actuator with relation to the casing. The rear part of this manipulativeactuator is formed with an annular manipulative element 15b which has a circularl opening 15C its' extreme rear end. A longitudinally grooved rod 17 has its rear end united with lthe bottom or front end of the hollow manipulative member 15, and this grooved rod is provided with an axial bore 18 which is' in open communication with `tl1e longitudinal groove 19 of the rod 17. - Areceptacle 2O is fitted within the'hollow manipulative member 15, and this receptacle comprises a tubular body having primarily open ends, so that a rubber eraser 21 can be fitted in the inner end, as illustrated in Fig. 2, and this member constitutes a bottom for the receptacle. The outer end of the receptacle may be closed by a screw threaded cap or cover 22. Slots 23 are provided in the wall of the receptacle 20, and the material between these slots may be slightly bowed so that they press outward against the inner surface ot' the hollow actuator 15 and effect a trictional engagement therewith for holding the receptacle in its place. However, when it is desired to remove the receptacle so that the eraser 21 may be used, it is only necessary to grasp the cap Q2 and pull the receptacle out of the hollow actuator, through the hole in the rear end of the latter. It should be understood that a 'supply o'f pencil' points may be stored in the receptacle 20, and that the slots Z3 are suffi-- ciently narrow to prevent the pencil points from passing out therethrough.
A modification of the receptacle for storing pencil points is shown in Fig. 5, and iu this modification, the outer end of the re- ,ceptacle 20' is closed by a metal disk 20 which may be integral therewith, and has an outlet 20" therethrough. A cap 20c is pivotally mounted on-the disk 20 and has an aperture 20 therethrough. The aperture 20 may be brought into and out ot' registry with the aperture 20" by turning the member 20 on its pivot.
It is not intended to limit this invention to the exact details ot construction and arrangement as specified and shown, but changes may be made within the scope of the inventive idea, as implied and claimed.
What I claim as my invention is :-w
1. In a lead-pencil, a casing havinga lug projecting inwardly thereof, said casing having an outlet at its front end, a pencilpoint in said outlet, a pusher operable to project said pencil-point through said outlet, a helical coil of wire mounted for longitudinal movement in said casing to actuate said pusher, said lug having its inner end between two helices of said helical coil of wire, and means to/rotate said helical coil and thereby co-act with said lug in effecting said longitudinal movement of the pusher.
2. In a lead-pencil, a casing having a lug projecting inwardly thereof, said casing having an outlet at its iront end, a pencilpoint in said outlet, a pusher operableto' project. said pencil-point through said outlet, a helical coil of vwire mounted for longitudinal movement in said easing to actuate said pusher, said lug having its inner end between two helices of said helical coil of wire, a longitudinally grooved rod having an axial bore in open communication vwith the longitudinal groove, and means'to rotate said rod, said pusher being slidably seated in said axial bore, said helical coil being disposed around said rod and having one end extending into said groove to effect rotation of the helical coil' with said rod, said helical coil also having one end in position to actuate said pusher.
3. In a lead pencil, a casing having an outlet at its front end, a sleeve formed with an inwardly extending lug` and being secured to the inner surface of said casing, a pencilpoint in said outlet, a pusher operable to project said pencil-point through said outlet, a helical coil slidingly fitted in' said' sleeve and l`receiving said lug between two ot' its helices, and actuating means ttor rotating said helical coil, said means also holding said pusher in such position between said pencil-point and helical coil that the latter causes the pusher to Iproject said pencilpoint.
4. In a lead pencil, a casing having an outlet at its front end, a sleeve formed with an 'inwardly extending lug and being secured to the inner surface of said casing, a. pencilpoint in said outlet, a rod having a longitudinal groove and an axial bore in open communication with said groove, said rod being mounted for rotation within said casing and extending through said` sleeve, and a wire member comprising a helical coil and a pusher, said pusher being seated in said groove and axial bore while said helical coil surrounds said grooved rod and is held against rotation relative thereto by its connection with said pusher, said helical coil being slidably fitted between said sleeve and grooved rod and serving to hold the latter axially alined with said pencil-point, said lu, r extending between two helices of said coil and co-acting therewith to move Said wire member longitudinally of the casing.
5. In a lead-pencil, a casing having a lug projecting inwardly thereof, said casing hav- 'ing an outlet at itsfront end, a pencil-point in said outlet, apusher operable to project said pencil-point through said outlet,.a heli? cal spring mounted for longitudinal moi/tjment in said casing to actuate' said pusher, said lug having its inner end betweentwo helices of said helical spring, and means to projecting rotate said helical spring and thereby coact with said 111g in effecting said lon itudi- 1 nal movement/of the pusher' and t ereby apd yieldingly holding the pencil-point. l
6. In a lead-pencil, a tubular outer casing,
, an actuating unit, meansco-acting with said outer casingvand actuating unit to 'project the lead, and a lead-storing receptacle norflo mally secured by friction in said actuating unit, said actuating unit including a hollow I cylindrical portion and an annular manipulative portion, said cylindrical portion being rotatably secured in said outer casing, said manipulative portion being exposed eX- teriorly of said outer casing to permit it to be grasped and turned by the hand of the' user, said annular portion having at its outer end anopening suiciently large to permit said 4receptacle to be passed therethrough into and out of said actuating unit.
7. In a pencil, the combination of a casing, holding and projecting means therein,v
anl actuating member rotatably secured in the casing and projecting beyond one of its ends to provide a finger-piece whereby the member may be grasped and rotated to actuate the lead projecting means and a lead storin' hand.
