MARTHA L. SISS ON, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
EGG-CASE FILLER. I
To all 10 [tom it may concern Be it known that I, MARTHA L. SIssoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVashington, District of Columbia, have invented new "and useful Improvements. in gg-Case Fillers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to eggcase fillers, and more specifically to a cell forming combination of elements to receive eggs in itsv cells for shipment in an egg-case or box.
The main object of this invention is to generally improve upon devices of this character by the provision of an improved constrl'letion and arrangement which is exceedingly eflicient in protecting the eggs against breakage, and which s very. convenient,
strong, durable, and can be manufacturedand maintained at a comparatively slight cost.
A further obj ect is to provide an improved egg-case filler comprising a plurality of su perposed bridge-like sets of eg -supports, each set including a spacing flange which is integral with the egg-supporting plate of this set, so that each set is automatically spaced from the other sets during the oper ation of placing the sets of fillers in the case or box.
Other objects and advantages are pointed out or implied in the following details of description, in connection with the accompanying drawings in which,
Figure l is a vertical sectional view through a box or case and through my improved filler, the eggs being indicated in dotted lines.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view along the line 22 of Fig. 1, viewed in the downward direction as indicated by the arrows.
Referring to these drawings in detail, in which similar reference characters correspond with similar parts throughout the several views, and in which the box 1 may be of any appropriate kind, shape and size, the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts which will now be described as follows:
Each of the superposed bridge-like eggsupports or containers is exactly like the others with the slight exceptions which will be pointed out hereinafter. Therefore, a broad or limited description of one will suffice for each. The bottom 1? of the box supports the lowermost one of the eg -supporting plates 2 through the medium of a down- Specification of Letters Patent.

turned flange formed on this plate, this flange preferably extendin throughout the margin 'of the plate 2. he down-turned flanges of the other plates 2 may be (though not essentially) wider than that of the lowermost plate 2. A .set of strips 4: intersects a set of strips 5, and these strips may be secured together in any known or appropriate way so as to form separate egg-containing compartments, and these compartments are seated on the. plate 2; that is, the strips are placed edgewise on the plate 2 and combine with the latter to form egg-cells. Eggreceiving apertures 2 are provided in the plate 2, and thesmall ends of the eggs are seated therein andsupported by their margins as shown in the drawings, these apertures being circular and relatively small so that the egg is supported a considerable dis tance above the floor 1 The subcover for each set of cells consists of a relatively thin and flexible sheet 6 which is somewhat springy and is provided with openings 7 and with flexible and somewhat springy fingers or tongues S which extend inwardly of these openings and normally incline upwardly to form a seat for the larger end of an egg. These tongues press the egg yieldingly into the apertures 2 and also compensate for the different sizes of eggs. A relatively rigid and thick plate'9 forms a supercover for this set of cells, holding the subcover against upward movement with the exception of the tongue 8.
The down-turned flange 2 of each superjacent set of cells rests on the relatively rigid plate 9 of the next subjacent set of cells, thereby supporting the superjacent set in spaced relation to the subjacent set, While the main portion of each set spans the interior of the box from wall to wall and provides a bridge-like egg-support which is somewhat yieldable and springy so as to cushion any shock received by the box and and, thin sheet provided with egg-engaging f tong ieswvhich: are relatively flexible and springy, said, sheet being seated on said in-' V tersecting strips, and a relativelyrigid plate vention is not limited to the use of any specific material. Neither limited to the specific construction and arrangementshown and described, but'changes:
may be made: Within: the scope: oftheinventive ideas as impliedandfclaimedi r What I'claiin asm'y'invention-is 1. In egg-case filler, the combination ofan eo supporting plate fer-med: with egg receiving openings and with down-turned suppoi'tingyecges, twov sets of intersecting strips seated: edgew-iseon" said-supporting. plate and eo-acting therewith tofiformeggplate seated on said relatively flexible sheet and provided with apertures-receiving the receiving compartments, a'relative'ly flexible provided with aperturesthrough which said tongues;are-upwardly and inx'vardly inclined, thisrelatively rigid plate being seated on said relatively flexible plate for-the purpose specified. .7 .7
is the invention '2. The combination defined by claim 1, and said relatively rigiduplate having a flange formed in one piece therewith and ex- .tendingentirely therearound and projecting r-upward ior abutting against the under side 7 oi the top-0i a box, as specified.
3. The combination of a boX including a floor and a cover, a plurality of superposed sets of egg-cells in said box, eachoi' said sets strips seated edgewise .on said supportingplate, a relatively flexible sheet formed with egg-engagingtongues andfbeing seated on SitlCl intersecting strips, a relatively rigid flexible tongues oi said" sheet, and-an up{ turned flangeforined on and extendingsubstanti'ally throughout the margin o'f the uppermostone oi said: relatively rigidplates in position to abut against the under side of said cover, for'the piirpose'specified.
