such as will'enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use'the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The present invention relates, generally, to improvements in lknock-down or takeapart scaffolds; and the invention has reference,rnore particularly, to a novel construction of knock-down painters swinging scaffold for outside use upon the exterior of buildingsand other structures.
The invention has for its principal object to provide a painters swinging scaffold comprising a plurality of separable sections, so arranged that the same may be taken apart to render the scaffold more easily handled and carried from place to place, and at the same time more compact when so taken apart so that the same may be conveniently loaded upon wagons, automobiles and the like, and also stored away in comparatively small space when not in use.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a knock-'down swinging scaffold, the sections of which are provided with eX- ceediugly strong and reliable means for coupling the said sections together for use as a complete swinging scaffold, sc that the same may be rendered unquestionablyV safe to supportthe weight to be sustained thereby when in use, and may be used by painters and others with perfect confidence.
Other objects of the present invention, not at this time more particularly enumerated, will be clearly understood from the follow- `ing detailed description of the same vWith the various objects of the present invention in view, the same consists, primarily, in the novel knock-'down' swinging scaffold hereinafter setforth; and, the invention consists, furthermore,-in the novel arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the same, all of which will be hereinafter more fully de* scribed, and then finally embodied in the claims appended hereto. y Y

Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the hereinabove described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to said drawings the reference-character l indicates the complete knock-down scaffold made according to and embodying theY principles of my present invention, the same comprising a plurality of separable sections, each comprising a pair of laterally spaced longitudinal side rails 2, interconnected by lateral cross-bars 3 suitably secured thereto, said cross-bars 3 serving to support the flooring or platform strips 4L. Preferably l employ three separable sections of suitable lengths, so that when the same are coupled together they will provide a completescaffold of thc length desired, although it will be understoodthat the principles of my. invention may be applied to scaffolds comprised of two or more separable sections as may be found desirable;
The adjoining or abutting ends of the respective sections are provided, upon the upper and lower surfaces of the side rails 2 with straps or coupling bars 5, having at their outer ends outwardly extending perforate ears or lugs 6 projecting at right angles tothe bodies of said straps or coupling bars 5, and having their outer lfacesY flush with the ends of said side rails 2. Arranged in connection with the outer side faces of said side rails 2 of the respective outer sections, at their inner or abutting ends, are reinforcing `plates 9, so disposed as to provide a longitudinally extend ing free end portion providing a tongue or interlocking member 10 projecting beyond --the inner ends of said respective outer sections at each side thereof. 'Said reinforcing plates are secured to said side rails 2 by bolts v11 which extend through said plates and transversely through said side rails 2 to project beyond the inner side faces of the latter, nuts 12 being engaged upon the free' ends of said bolts to secure the same in place.
Connected with the outer side faces of the said side rails 2 of said intermediate or central section, so as to project laterally Voutward therefrom adjacent to the ends of said section, are pairs of yoke members 13 providingreceiving sockets 14, adapted to receive and embrace said tongues or interlocking members 10 when the outer scaffold sections are properly assembled in connected relation to said central or intermediate scaffold section. The lateral arms 15 of said yoke member 13 respectively extend laterally over the upper and lower surfaces of said side rails 2, being countersunk in said side rails so as to be flush with said upper and lowerfsurfaces thereof, and so as to be permitted to extend beneath the straps or coupling bars 5, and so disposed as to permit the bolts 7 to pass throughlbothsaid straps or coupling bars 5 and said lateral arms 15, whereby the latter as well as the former are securely fastened in proper positions to the side bars 2 by said bolts 7 and their nuts 8.
Vhen it is desired to interconnect the "said separable sections together to provide members '10 of said reinforcing plates 9 with the receiving sockets 11 of the yokemembers' 13, and the said outer sections are vthen pushed'longitudinally inward to cause the inner ends of their side rails 2 to abut the respective ends of the sideA rails of said central or intermediate section, and said A4 tongues or interlocking members 10 to enter said receiving sockets 14 to vbe thus embraced by saidl yoke members 13. When the side rails 2 of the respective outer and central scaffold sections are vthus brought into mutual abutting relation, the perforate ears Vor lugs 6 of the straps or coupling bars of adjoining sections, are alined togethei` so that a fastening bolt 16 may be passed through each pair of registered ears or lugs 6, yand secured with la nut 17, thus binding said ears or lugs 6 together, and consequently firmly and efficiently mutually securing together said several scaffold sections iii operative coupled relation, and held against any possibility of accidental longitudinal separation one from the other. The i tongues or interlocking members 10 of the reinforcing plates 9 of the outer scaffold sections being firmly embraced and engaged by the yoke-members 13 of the central or intermediate scaffold section, the said intersupport of workman and materials when the scaffold is put into use.
In order to provide a further insurance against any possible accidental longitudinal separation of the kseveral scaffold sect-ions,V when the same are arranged and secured in operative 'interconnected relation one to the other, 1 provide in oneof each pair of the yoke-members 13Y an opening or perforation 18, which isfalined with a transverse opening or perforation 19 provided in the each side rail2 the central scaffold secr tion. 1n like manner similar opening or perforation 20 is provided in each tongue or interlocking member 10, so positioned ioo that when the latter has been moved into 1.-
operative embraced relation to the yoke members 13, said opening or perforation 20 willaline itself with and intermediate of the respertiveopenings or perforations 18 and 19, whereupon -a transvere removable lock against accidental displacement by passing through their free ends, which project beyond the inner side faces of the side rails 2 of said central scaffold section, Cotter-pins VSaid lock pins 21 may themselves be secured e 22 or any other suitable fastening means capable of being released when it isdesired ers or builders scaffold, so that when in interconnected arrangement the complete scaffold is of adequate strength for outside Work, and perfectly safe in every Way so that Workmen may use the same at all levels of building exteriors with all confidence.
I am aware that some changes may be made in the arrangements and combinations of the various devicesand parts, as Well as in the details of the Construction of the same, Without departing from the scope of my present invention as set forth in the foregoing specification and as defined in the appended claims. Hence, I do not limit my'in- Vention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the various parts as described in said specification, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of the said parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
I claim l. A knock-down scaffold comprising a plurality of separable scaffold sections, coupling bars having Lip-turned perforate lugs at the abutting ends of adjoining sections,
bolt and nut devices engaged through opposed lugs of said coupling bars to secure said sections against longitudinal separation When assembled end to end, reinforcing plates providing longitudinal interlocking members secured to the sides of and projecting beyond the abutting end of one section, and laterally projecting yoke-members secured to the sides of the abutting end of the adjoining section Within the embrace of which said interlocking members are received to reinforce the joined sections against col-A lapse.

A knock-down scaffold comprising a plurality of separable scaffold sections, cou pling bars having up-turned perforate lugs at the abutting ends of adjoining sections, bolt and nut devices engaged through opposed lugs of said coupling bars to secure said sections against longitudinal separation when assembled end to end, reinforcing plates providing` longitudinal interlocking members securedto the sides of and projecting beyond the abutting end of one section, laterally projecting yoke-members secured to the sides of the abutting end of the adj oining section Within the embrace of Which said interlocking members are received to reinforce the joined sections against collapse, certain of said yoke-members and said interlocking members having perforations adapted to register in mutual alinement When said parts are operatively interconnected, and a removable transverse lock pin for insertion through said alined perforations.

A knock-down scaffold comprising a plurality of separable scaffold sections, each scaifold section comprising a pair of laterally spaced longitudinal side rails, laterally eX- tending cross-bars interconnecting said side rails, and longitudinal flooring members supcoupling bars having upturned perforate lugs at their outer ends extending flush with the abutting ends of said side rails, boltand nut devices engaged through opposed lugs of said couplinglbars to hold said sections against longitudinaly separation when assembled end to end; reinforcing plates4 secured to the outer side faces of the side rails at the abutting end of one section, said reinforcing plates providingr longitudinally extending interlocking` members projecting beyond said abutting end of one section, and laterally projecting yoke-members secured to the outer side faces of the side rails at the abutting end of an adjoining section Within the embrace of Which said interlocking members are received to reinforce the joined sections against collapse.
