Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
RULE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented N 1920 Application filed May 26, 1919. Serial No. 299,737.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS D. LAU- RENT, a citizen of the United States, residing at VVestfield, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rules,'of which the following is a specification. V r
This invention relates to improvements in rules and the principal object of the invention is to provide means for holding the per tions of a rule at different angles whereby the rule may be used as a square.
another object of the invention is to locate the locking means within the parts of the rule so that said locking means will not interfere with the ordinary use'ot" the rule.
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, retereiice will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughouttheseveral views, and in which Figure l is a view showing a'rule supplied" with my invention;
Fig. 2 is a. part sectional view; Fig. 3 is a detailview. i In these views 1 indicates one of the hall? portions of a rule and 2 indicates the other half portion, these portions being pivotally connected together by the usual hinge means which consists of the cylindrical part 8 which fitsbetween the disks 4 carried by the;
other part and the pin 5 which connects the said cylindrical part and disk together. In carrying out my invention 1 form a hole 6 in the inner end of the part 2 and place in said hole a screw bolt 7'. The screw part ofthis bolt is engaged bya disky8 which has a portion thereof projectingthrough a recess 9 formed in the part 2 of the rule and communicating with the hole 6 so" that the the scope of the appended claim.
knurled edge of said disk will slightly pro- ]ect above the face of the rule so the same may be turned by the thumb or finger to move the bolt longitudinally. The bolt is prevented from rotating by means of a small pin 7 carried by said bolt and passing through a slot 2 formed in the rule. The cylindrical part 3 is provided with holes 10 which are adapted to i'egi'sterwith the outer end 01". the hole 6 sothat the bolt 7 may engage one of these holes and 'thus lock the two parts of the rule 'against further movement. It will thus be seen that by engaging the bolt with the different holes the two 7 parts of the rule may beheld at any desired angle. As the parts forming my invention are inclosed within the body of the rule they" will not interfere with the ordinary use of the rule. r
It is thought from the foregoing descrip- I tion that the advantages and novel features oiiny invention will be readily apparent. g I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within What Iclaim'is I v A :toldable rule having its hinge composed of a cylindrical part'carr'ied by one member and a pair. of disks carried by the other memben'said cylindrical part having a plurality of holes exten ding inwardly'fro n portions of its periphery, the part carrying the disks having a longitudinally extending hole therein and a laterally extending recess in communicationwith said l10l8, a screw bolti in said hole, a knurleddisk located in the recess and having a screw threaded aperture engaging the boltand moving the same into and out of engagement withany one of the holes in the cylindrical partof the hinge, said disk having a portion projectingfrom one face of the rule and means for prevent ing rotation ofthebolt. .1
