ELECTRIC rLUiD-HEATER.
` Application led April 19,
erence to one which is especially designed for installation in one of the water circulating pipes leading from anautomobile radia-` tor tothe engine, itsfpurpose being to keep` at a temperaturewhich will prevent it from freezing'during cold weather. usesto which my invention may be put, although it is not to be restricted to this use.l The object of the invention is to provide a simple and effective heater of the abovementioned character which is easy to make use of, that is, to install; one which is durable and inexpensive to both the manufacturer and Ithe user. `Other objects and advantages of the invention will be a parent during the course of the following escription. 1
In the accompanying drawings forming a part' of the specificati'on'and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,v the figurer, is an central vertical section view of a heater constructed in accordance showing it installed:
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred-embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1 designates a pipe through which water circulates. In thisinstan'ce, however, this pipe is supposed to be either the `outletpipe or return pipe of the water-circulating system of an automobile, in connection with which my invention is primarilyintended tobe used.
My heater comprises a shell2 of tubular formation, preferably made' of light metal, such as aluminum made integral with or connected to the shell at lits open endis a head 3 which is provided with a plurality of ila-t faces to permit the use of a wrench. To
accommodate the shell for connection with ,the
plipe 1, I provide it with screw-threads 2*. e head 3 is counter-bored to provide "electrode 9 therethrough.
The foregoing is one of the with my invention,
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented NOV. 30,1920.

an annular-internal shoulder 4, the purpose of which will hereinafter bedescribed.v
Disposed within the shell is a .sleeve 5 of insulation material, and this sleeve is prorvided at one end with a lateral flange 6 which rests, en ,the shoulder 1,' it being tightly clamped'thereon by the nut 7 -which -coacts with -the threaded portion ofthe counterbore. Thenut 7 is provided with a hole which extends therethrough and in this :hole a .second sleeve 8, of insulation material is fitted. `This hole permits passage of an lOsurrounds the electrode, one end thereof beinggrounded to the nut 7, while the opposite end thereofcontacts the brasswasher lllcarried by the electrode 9. If desired a core l2 of asbestos or the like may be in-- serted between the electrode and heating A heating coil coil. Current is supplied to the electrode byvmeans of thefwires 13 which lead to the battery 14, which may be,v the battery which is commonly used for supplying current to the ignition and lighting systems of the machine., vThe numeral 15 designates the switch by means of which the heater is placed in operation. InA operation, it will be seen that after the electrical circuit has been closed by the switch 15, current will be supplied to the heating coil, Vand the heat radiating therefrom Awill '-heat the shell 2. Hence, it will be seen that the water passingthrough the pipe'L and coming into Contact with the shell-f2 willbe suiliciently heated to prevent it from freezing..
My heater isy extremely simple in cony struction and consists of comparatively fewV and inexpensive parts, which are so arranged that they maybe readily disconnected forr 'any purposes whatsoever. Q .tion here, thatjmyl heater is not only to be I `desire to menusedas a radiator heater, but it-may be effectively' used forvarious other purposes.v F or instance, 'it may be used for boiling water ina receptacleor the like, It is to be understood that the form ofy my` invention herein shown and described is to be taken as a preferredform of the same/and that various minor changes in the shape, size and arrangement of' parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
I claim:
A device of the class described "comprising a. tubular shell open at one-end and closed at its opposite end, being provided at its open end with an internal continuous shoulder adjacent to and above which are internal screw-threads, a sleeve'of insulation niaterial disposed in the Shell, being` provided at its outer end with a lateral flange restingl on said shoulder'7 and a removable heating unit arrangedwithin said sleeve and tube, said unit including a centrally agertured Screw-threaded plug;v which is screwed into the threaded portion oii the shelhserving to clamp the aforementioned lateral lange tightly .against- Said shoulder, a second and relatively small Sleeve of insulation material fitted in said aperture, this sleeve beingalso provided with a lateral the plug, 'the opposite end having electrical engagement with said washer; and an eleotrieal connection on the outer end of said electrode, one of the parte of this Connection Servingto Clamp the lateral flange of the eecond nained sleeve tightly against said plug.
En testimony ivhereol1 l have hereunto Set my hand'.
