Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed August 8, 1919. Serial No. 316,083.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHRISTOPHER ARMAT, citizen of the United States, residing at Vashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to looks and latches, and more particularly to means for holding the latch when locked against any mechanism that may be exerted against it to cause its retraction other than by the operation of the key. My invention, of course, contemplates the usual knobs and means for dogging the same when it is desired to confine the retraction of the latch from the outside to the key mechanism. A further object of the invention is to so construct the same that it will comprise but few parts, may be easily and cheaply manufactured, and will be direct and efficient in operation.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like symbols of reference represent corresponding parts 1n the several views Figure 1 is an elevation of a lock embodying my invention, with the cap plate removed, the latch bolt being in the normal protracted position;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the plate forming a part of my locking device; and,
Fig. 3 is a side view of the same.
The invention is shown in connection with a mortise lock or latch, the bolt of which is adapted to be actuated by a key and also by knobs, but it will be apparent that my bolt and the parts connected therewith will operate in the absence of the other portions.
In the drawings the numeral 1 represents the case of the device; 2 a latch bolt; 3 the stem of the bolt; 1 the spring embracing the latch bolt'stem; and 5 a cross-head on the end of the latch bolt. 6 is a latch-retracting lever; 7 a post upon which the same is pivoted; and 8 a spring to normally hold the lever in position to be engaged by the cam 9 actuated by a knob spindle 10, and also by the cam 11 on the outside, shown in dotted lines. The hubs of the cams are associated with the usual two-part knob spindle, which I have not considered it necessary to illustrate.
12 is a dogging slide adapted to engage a notch 13 in the cam 9, and 14 a releasing slide connected with the dogging slide by a link 15. 16 is a post on the case on which link 14 is pivoted. 17 is my controller bolt, having a spring 18embracing the same, and journaled ina recess in lug 19 on the casing. 20 is an angular slide working in conjunction with bolt 17, said slide having an upturned end 21, in which is formed a perforation or hearing 22 for mounting on the stem of bolt 17. 23 is the head portion of the controller bolt. The angular slide also has two cut- away portions 24 and 25, the former to permit a gravity locking lever 26 to operate therein, and the latter to permit the operation of lever 6.
Lever 26 has a recess 27 within which a lug 28 on lever 6 is adapted to be received to allow the forward end of lever 26 to drop behind the bolt head 2. Slide 20 is supported in a recess formed by lugs 29 on the casing. Lever 26 is pivoted at 39 to the casing, and is controlled by lever 6 and slide 20. 30 indicates the strike plate that serves in part to operate the latch slide 20 and receive the main latch in its locked position.
31 is a lug depending from the cut-away portion 24 of the slide 20, the function of the same being to cooperate in the operation of raising the head 32 of lever 26 to release the latch when said slide is pressed forward by spring 18.
The lever 6 may be actuated from the outside of the door by suitable mechanism which may comprise a cylinder lock 33, having a rollback or cam arm 34 to engage the upper extremity 35 of the retracting lever. 36 is a washer or head to hold the controller bolt in position on the lever 6. Lever 6 also serves to retract controller bolt 17 when operated. p
The operation of the device will eb apparent from the foregoing description. The lever 6 may be operated from the outside of the. door by suitable'key mechanism, as shown, or by knobs at the inside and outside of the door, respectively. It will also be apparent that my lock is reversible and may be used for a door opening in either direction.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by LettersPatent, is
1. In a lock, a latch bolt, a retracting lever adapted to operate the same, a controller bolt adapted to be operated by the strike plate and by the retracting lever, a gravity locking lever formed with a head and having pivotal connection to the main casing, a spring embracing the controller bolt, and a slide formed with cut-away portions and an upturned end, said upturned end embracing the spring on the controller bolt and the cut-away portions permitting play of the retracting lever and the head of the gravity lever, so that said head will engage the rear of the latch bolt when the controller bolt is retracted.
2. A lock, comprising a latch bolt, :1 retracting lever adapted to operate the same, a controller bolt adapted to be operated by the strike plate, a gravity locking lever, and a slide having a cut-away portion to receive the locking lever when the controller bolt is retracted.
3. A lock, comprising a latch bolt, a knob mechanism, a retracting lever adapted to operate the latch bolt and be operated by the knob mechanism, a controller bolt adapted to be operated by the strike plate, a spring embracing the controller bolt, a slide connected with the controller bolt and held in proper relation by the spring of the same so as to move with said controller bolt, and a gravity locking lever pivoted to the casing and having a head to engage and lock the latch when the controller bolt is retracted.
4. In a lock, a latch bolt, a retracting lover adapted to operate the same, a controller bolt adapted to be operated by the strike plate, a spring embracing the controller bolt, a slide formed with an upturned end to confine the spring of the controller bolt, said slide also having cut-away portions, and a gravity locking lever pivoted to the main casing and adapted to be received in one of the cut-away portions to lock the latch bolt.
5. A lock, comprising a latch bolt, a knob mechanism, a retracting lever adapted to 0perate the latch bolt and be operated by the knob mechanism, a''ontroller bolt, a spring emb'acing the controller bolt, a slide formed with cut-away portions and an upturned end, a gravity locking lever formed With a head and a recess, a pivot connecting the gravity lever to the casing, said gravity lever adapted to engage the rear of the latch bolt through a cut-away portion in the slide, and a lug on the retracting lever adapted to engage the recess in the gravity lever to operate the same.
