Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 30, 1920.
Application filed April 27, 1920. Serial No. 378,959.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Eownin) V000 and Leon INGRAHAM, citizens of the United States, residing at Indian River, in the county of Cheboygan, State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Nail, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to nails or the like, and it is the primary object of the invention to provide a nail which will anchor itself within the material in which the same. is positioned,- in a manner to prevent displacement of, the nail under ordinary conditions.
A further object of the invention is to provide a nail having its side edges formed so that the nail will cut its way into the material into which the same is driven, and will not be wedged through the material, thereby eliminating any possibility of splitting the material under operation.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a nail having anovel form of shank. whereby a water-tight connection will 'be formed between the nail and the material under operation, adjacent to the head thereof.
\Yith the foregoing and other objects in view which will .appearas the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combi nation and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Referring to "the drawing in detail, the nail forming the subject matter of the pres ent invention includes a shank portion, which is preferably substantially triangular in cross section, the side surfaces of the of the same. view taken on line shank being concaved as at 5, to provide the cutting edges 6 to permit the nail to cut its way into the material into which the same is driven.
The nail is provided with the usual head 7, on one end of the shank, the shank adjacent to the head being circular in formation as'at 8, and tapering toward the shank as at 9, so that when the nail is driven into material, the enlarged portion 8 will embed itself in the material adjacent to the outer end of the opening formed by the nail, to provide a watertight connection between the side walls of the enlarged portion 8 and the opening.
The piercing end of the nail is formed into an enlargement as at 10 which ta ers toward the point 11, forming a part 0 the shank and as shown this piercing end is provided with the knife-like edges 12, adapted. to cut into the material under operation in a man ner to prevent splitting of the wood under operation. F mm the foregoing it is obvious that when a nail constructed in accordance with the present invention, is driven into wood, the enlarged portion 10 thereof, will cut its way into the wood, the enlarged portion 10 providing an anchor to restrict movement of the nail in the opposite direction, and prevent displacement of the nail, under normal con ditions.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is In a nail, a shank portion, a head formed at one end of the shank portion, said shank portion havinga circular portionadjacent the head, tapering surfaces connecting the circular portion and shank, said shank having an enlargement formed at one end thereof, said piercing end having cutting surfaces, and said head adapted to lock the shank within the material in which the same is positioned.
