f0 (.JZ G'IitOWt it may concern Be it known that I, tinYMonn (JrMnrNnn, a es, and resident of Appleton, in the county of Outagamie and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain newanduseful Improvements in Cutting- Bloclzs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in wooden die or cutting blocks which are particularly adapted for use in die presses forcutting out blanks from leather or other sheet material.
It is the principal object of this invention to provide a block of this character having simply constructed and very efficient reinforcing means for holding the individual sections of which it is made together.
An additional object is'to provide a reinforcing means for blocks of this character which can be very inexpensively made since practically all the parts thereof can be formed of standard stock.
With these general objects in view the invention resides in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter more particularly described and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figure 1 represents a plane view of the cutting block, particularly in section provided with my improved reinforcing means.
Fig. 2 is a side elevational View of the die block showing one portion of the reinforcing means.
Fig. 8 is a part sectional and part elevational view of the block, the section being taken upon the plane of the line 3-3 of Referring more particularly to the drawing, it will be seen that as usual in blocks of this character, the same is composed of a plurality of built up sections 1 which are preferably small rectangular blocks glued together to produce a unit A of desired size and shape. In the present instance, and as is usually customary, the unit A, which forms the die block proper, is substantially square having a pair of parallel sides 2 and a second pair of such sides 3.
As a reinforcing means, the block A is provided with a plurality of bolts or rods 4 which extend through openings bored through the sections 1 from one side 2 to the Specification of Letters Patent.

opposite parallel side 2. Any numberof rods 4 may be employed and they may be extended through the block in any desired manner,but are preferably arranged paralleltoeach other and have their opposite ends p re} ccted beyond the adjacent side walls 2 and threaded as shown.
Each side wall 2 has: a clamping means engaged therewith, each of these means in the present embodiment of the invention consisting of a pair of spaced parallel clamp bars 5 and 5, the same being disposed one on eachsideof the projecting ends of the rods 4:. In other words these rods t are locatedbetween the clamp bars 5 and 5, and they are connected therewith by substantially li -shaped clamp plates 6. One ofthese plates is disposed on each threaded end of clamp thebars 5 and5 so that when nuts 7 threaded on said rods 4 are tightened, said bars ,will be urged into engagement with the sides 2 of the block A. From this, as well as from Fig. 2, it will be seen that the bars 5 are entirely independ' ent of the cooperating bars 5.
The other side walls 3 of the block A are engaged by tie bars 8. In order to attach these tie bars 8 to the other elements of the reinforcing means, the clamp bars 5 are cut so that they will be of a length greater than the length of the sides 2 and their endsare reduced and threaded as at 9 for disposition in slots 10 of the opposite ends of the tie rods 8. Nuts 11 threaded on these reduced ends 9 securely clamp the tie bars and clamp bars 5 together.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing it, will be readily seen that the means consisting of the bars 5 and 5 may be readily formed from ordinary rectangular stock, and they are ready for use as soon as cut except for the formation of the reduced and threaded ends 9. Nevertheless regardless of the simplicity of such clamp means, a very effective engagement between the surfaces of the side Walls 2 and the ends of the bars 4 is procured. Furthermore the provision of separate and independent clam bars 5 and 5 permits the sections of the block A to readily shift with respect to each other and to the metallic reinforcing means due to shrinkage and the like without danger of splitting.
Various changes may be made in the form and proportion and in the general association of the parts without departing from the principles of the invention or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Iclaim:
1. In a device of the class described, a block including a plurality of abutting sections, a bolt extending through the abutting sections and having itsopposite ends projected beyond the opposite sides of the block, a clamp means for each of the aforesaid opposite sides, one of said means comprising a pair'of separate and independent clamp bars, both engaging one of said sides, said clamp bars being straight and of uniform cross section throughout their length, clamp plates disposed on the opposite'ends of the bolt, one of said plates engaging both bars of said pair, the other plate engaging the other clamp means, and tie bars engaged with the other sides of the block and connecting the corresponding ends of one of the clamp bars of eachpair. 2. In a device of the class described, a
block including a plurality of abutting sections, .a bolt extending through the abutting sections'and having its opposite ends projecting beyond the opposite sides of the block, clamp means comprising a pair of separate and independent clamp bars engaging each of the aforesaid opposite sides, one of said clamp bars of each pair being straight and of uniform cross section throughout its length, clamp plates disposed on the opposite ends of the bolt and engaging both bars of each pair, and tie bars ongaged with the other sides of the bloc and each connecting the corresponding ends of said straight bars whereby a straight pull is exerted longitudinally on said clamp bars.
3. In a device of the class described, a block including a plurality of abutting sections, a bolt extending through the abutting sections and having its opposite ends projeeting beyond the opposite sides of the block, clamp means comprising a pair of separate and independent clamp bars engaging each of the aforesaid opposite sides, said clamp bars being straight and of uniform section throughout their length, the projectedends of bolt being disposed between said bars, clamp plates disposed on the opposite ends of the bolt and bridging and engaging said bars of each pair, and tie bars engaged with the other sides of the block and connecting the corresponding ends of one of the clamp bars of each pair whereby a straight pull is exerted longitudinally on said clamp bars.
