Application filed November 9, 1918. fierial No. 2613M To all 10/1 om it may concern lie it known that I, FREDERICK Lnmnn lUAX'lDf-lON, a subject of the King of Great llritain, and resident of the city of Halifax, in the Province of Nova Scotia, Dominion oi? lanada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dish-Wishing Machines of which, the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to improveznentsin dish washing machines of a. type in which the plates are held in racks and washed by water splashed against them by a rotary splasher, and the objects of the invent on are generally to improve the construction of the device to enable the various parts to better perform the functions required of them.
The invention comprises a casing contaiir ing a special form of tray for the plates or dishes, a rotary splasher therein, a hinged cover and hinged brackets adapted to sup port the cover, constructed and arranged as shown in detail in the accompanying specilication and drawings.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a transverse section.
Fig. 3 is a sectional detail showing the water-tight joint between the cover and the casing.
.ll ig. at is a detail of one of the hinged brackets in plan.

liilce cl'iarM'tcrs of reference indicate cor resg'ionding parts in all the figures. I
Referring to the drawings, A represents a casing" adapted to contain the dishes to be washed, supported on suitable legs ll) and provided with a cover 11 to make watertight connection between the front wall 12 section of a portion of alternative alternative to the casing and the edge of the cover, a rahheted joint is formed between the two and the cover is provided with a heading or bar 13 adapted to fit the end face'ot the front wall of the casing.
The bottom of the casing is formed with an inclined portion 1a terminating in a partially cylindrical portion 15 provided with a drainage outlet pipe is. B represents the rotary splashcr in any convenient form having its axle 17 supported at one end by a diagonally extending cross bar 18 and having the other end extending tlnrough and journaled in the casing and provided with a pinion. 19 which nleshes with a gear 20 mounted on a shaft 21 adapted to he turned by a handle 22.
The cover 11 is adapted to form a support for the dishes taken out of the casing and to support the cover in this position. One or more hinged brackets 23 are provided hinged to the casing, adapted to he swung out wardly as shown in Figs. 2 and at to term a support for the cover, the normal. osition being indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 4:.
To one side of the splasher B is mounted plate holder C, the special design of which is shown in Figs. 5 to 9. The plate holder comprises a base plate suitably supported from the frame, a plurality of plate raclrs 31, comprising; parallel wires 32 and 33 of inverted U-shape. each wire having one end secured to a cross bar 34 on the l'iasc, while the other ends are connected together and secured to a movable reciprocating bar 35. The two elements 32 and 33 are preferably made from a single piece of wire' the free ends of which are connected to the bar 341i while the opposite ends of the elements 31 in and 32 are connected by a cross piece or bond. 36. The cross bar 35 is adapted to be rcciprocated by means of a hinged operating rod 36 extending through an opening 37 in the casing having its ends secured to a pro jcction 38 which connects with a pin 39 extending through a slot Win the Face 30 and then connected to the cross bar 35. in this wayn while one end of each plate rack is held the other end may he rcciprocated to cause opposite sides of the plate to be thoroughly washed. The e'tlcct of this is to change the angle of the plate so that first one side of the plate and then the other may he presented to the splashing fluid.
Above the splasher is another plate raclr D similar in form to the plate rack (I and including the base plate 50 and a plurality of trans\"ersely extending racks 51 each includin; lll)\\'2ll't ll diverging side members 52 and 53 and cross members 54 adapted to extend across the face of the plates. the lower edge of the plates being: adapted to fit against spaced projections 55 on reciprocable bar 56 which is reciprocated by an operating rod 57, the amount of reciprocation being limited by means of a pin 58 which reciprocates in a slot 59 in a base plate 50. In this my the inclination of the plates may be changed to cause opposite sides to be washed.
As many changeseould be made in the above construction and many apparently widely ditl'erent embodiments of my inveir tion Within the scepe of the claim. coir strueted without departing from thespirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specification and drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
What I claim as my invention is:
In a dish washingmachine a plate holder comprising a base plate and rtwiprocable bar thereon, and a pluralitw of racks of inverted U-shape each having one end counected to the base plate and the opposite end connected to the rta-ipromible bar.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
FREDERICK LELAND DAVlDSON.
