lids of sound reproducing machines, and one of the objects .of the invention is to provide an improved device of this character which will be of a unitary structure whereby the parts may be all mounted upon the same base and whereby the device may be readily installed and at the same time insure the proper positioning of the parts with re-' lation to each other.
A further object is to provide animproved device of this character having means where by a. predetermined degree of friction may be provided between the parts for maintaining them under normal conditions in their adj usted positions with respect to each other but which will, under abnormal conditions.

To theattainment of these ends and the accomplishment of other new and useful objects as will appear, the invention consists in the features of novelty in substantially the construction, combination and ar-' rangement of the several parts hereinafter more fully descr bed and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings illustrating this invention, and in which;

The projection 26 and openings 27 are of such a size and configuration with respect to each other that when the projection enters one of the open ings it will, under normal conditions, hold the lid in its adjusted position but, under abnormal conditions or when force or pressure is exerted upon the lid, the projections will move out of one of the openings 27 and into the next opening as the element 17 is swung about its pivot.
In the form of the invention shown in Fig. 6 the projection 26 is omitted as are also the openings 27 and the friction is produced by the contact of the face of the end 25 0f theelement 17 moving over the surface 24.
.In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 7 to 9, the friction creating surface adjacent thepivotal connection between the base 14 and the element 28 is formed by spaced friction disks or surfaces -29-3O which may be constructed of any suitable friction creating material. In this form of the invention the base member 14; is offset as at '31 and the element 28 is pivotally connected thereto by means of a bolt or pin 32 pasing through the portion 31 and'the element 28, the bolt being provided with a head 33 engaging within the recess formed by the ofi'set'portion 31 and which bolt extends for any desired distance beyond the elements 282930. The end of the bolt is provided with threads 34 to receive thenut 35 and also a lock nut 36 if desired. Encompassing the bolt 32 is a spring 37 one end of all of the parts including the friction creat- 7 ing means and the counterbalancing tension means are mounted. upon the same support 111g structure and the entire device may be appl ed or removed as a unit. Hereto-fore 3 considerable-difliculty has been experienced in that the partshave been made separate or detached from each other and each is secured to the wall of the cabinet thereby necessitating guessing at the proper position for theparts with respect to each other. In thepresent invention, it will be noted that the parts will be in the same relative positions with respect to each other no matter in what position they may be placed in the cabinet or the style of the cabinet,
While the preferred form of the invention has b'eenherein shown and described, it is the base, a link pivotally connected atone end with said element, means pivotally connecting the other end'of the link with the lid whereby when the lid is moved the said element and link will be moved about their pivots, means interposed between the said element and base for counterbalancing the lid, and means adjacent the pivot of the base and the said element for creating a friction between these parts.

A lid supporter embodying a base ele ment adapted to be secured to a fixed support, an element pivotally connected with the base, a link pivotally connected at one end with said element, means pivotally con necting the other end of the link with the lid whereby when the lid is moved the saidelement and link will be moved about their pivots, means interposed between the, said element and base for counterbalancing the lid, the last recited means embodying a spring'detachably and adjustably connected with one of the partsfor varying the stress of the spring, and means for creating a fric-' tion-between one of the movable parts and the adjacent cooperating member. t

A lid supporter embodying a base element adapted to be secured to a fixed support, an 'elementrpivotally connected with the base, a link pivotally connected at one end with said element, means pivotally connecting the other end of the link'with the lid whereby'when the lid is moved, the said element and link will be moved about their pivots,- means interposed between. the-said element and base for counterbalancing the lid, and means adjacent the pivot of the base and the said element for creating a friction between these parts,;the last recited 3 means embodying an extended friction cre ating surface over which said element moves;
