To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that L Pnrnn G. SrnvnNsoN, a subject of theKingof Great Britain and a resident of the city of Philadelphia, county of ljhiladelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useiul Improvements in Railway-Crossings, kof which the foliowing is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention `relates to a new and useful device adapted to be used atl railway cross-L ingsv where the tracks cross at an angle to each other.
' Among the objects of my invention is to provide new and useful device adaptedto` lbe connected to the crossing rails of the track whereby the noise and the jarring action usually accompanying the travel of a car at the crossing will lbe substantially eliminated or avoided.'

The portion 28 when in its uppermost position is upon the same level as the surfaces 24 and 25 so that the wheel tire in crossing from one section thereof to the other will ride upon the surface 28 without the usual dropping of the wheel into the groove of the cross rail, making a noise and unduly vibrating the car, the flange of the wheel operating upon the other evener member to maintain it in lowered position.
To accomplish the above result the central sections V3 are provided with downwardly converginginclined slots 34 and 35 and the flange contacting members 6 and 7 provided on each side thereof with rigid or integral projections 36 and 37 adapted to slide in slots 34 and projections 38 and 39 adapted to slide in the slots'.- As a member 6 or 7 is forced downwardly, the riding of the projections 36 and 87 or.88 and 39 in the slots 34 or 35'will cause a simultaneous relative longitudinal movement of the member 6 or 7 with respect to the members 4 or 5 along the dove- tail grooves 32 or 33 thereof. YThe downward movement of the members 4 or 5 will cause the other member 7 or 6., by reason of the dove-tail connection therebetween to` draw the same downwardly, at the same time causing the lateral projections 38 and 39 or 36 and 37, as the case may be, to slide in the slots 35 or V34 respectively thereby causing the members 7 or 6 to approach each other. A reverse movement will causeV the same to separate when the flange of a wheel. travels in a cross-,direction and operates to .lower the transverse evener member.
The inner ends of the members 6 and 7 are so cut with the bevels 40 and 4lV so that as members 6 are approaching each other the members 7 are receding and the bevels permit the latter to clear the former as fast as the former advance or approach each other.

Said member will by its downward movement vforce the endsof the lever 8 projecting inthe apen tures thereof downwardly thereby causing the opposite ends of said levers to move up- Inasmuch as the opposite ends of wardly. the levers are projecting into apertures in the transverse evener member the latter will be caused to rise in the transverse slot of the device so as to bring the surface 28 thereof into horizontal level even with the surface upon which the car wheel tire is traveling so that as the wheel crosses the raised evener member on the surf-ace 28 it will -do so smoothly without dropping into the groove of the transverse track, the Yflange 31 at the same time continuing to ride on the first.

V"The construction, however, is similar to that above described with the exception thatl the ends of the levers 8 instead of abutting each other -in the' apertures l2 and 13 of the evener mem-'- bers 4 and 5 are disposed 'in overlapped adjacent relation. ,This construction is followed in order that'the levers may be Vof equal size Yand of equal'lever eife'ct, the moments of force being'equal about each pivot y pin 9 as well as that the movement of the ends of said levers will also be equal .where` by the evener members may berc'aused to move with a balanced action at both ends Y thereof and to an equal extent, or in other words, when one of the evener members is lowered the other will be raised to a corj responding equal extent Vand vice versa. It
will be observed that the radial distances from the aXis of the pivot pin 9to theeffective point of contact between the end' of the lever 8 and the evener member are equal for all levers shown. The operation of this device is the same as that described above in connection with Figs. l, 2, Lland 5.

that my invention is not to be limited to the particular details shown and described but that the same comprehends other devices and'constructions that do not depart from the spirit of my invention and the scope of the appended claims. l
Having thus described myV invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United' States is:
l. In a railway track crossing, the combination of a member connected to the ends of the transverse rails and provided with -ransverse slots over which wheels of a car are adapted to travel, evener members in the slots of said member, levers pivotally mounted between and connected to the ends Y of said evener members whereby the downward movement of one of said evener members will move said levers and cause an v upward movement of the other evener members in said slots, and bring the upper surface of the upwardly moved evener member in coincidence with the top surface ofthe tracks upon which a car wheel is traveling.
2. In a railway crossing, the combination of a member connected to theends of the transverse rails vand provided with transverse slots in which the flanges of car wheels are adapted to travel, evener members in said slots, levers pivotally mounted betweenV and connectedv to the ends of said evener members, whereby the engagement of said flanges with one of said' evener members will depress the saine and move said levers causing the other evener member to move the top surface of the tracks upon Vwhich, the car wheel is traveling.
3. In a railway crossing, the combination of a member connected to the .ends of the transverse Vrails and provided withtransverse slotsin vwhich the flanges of carwheels are adapted to travel, .evener members in said slots, levers pivotally mounted between and connected to the vends of said evener members, whereby the engagementof said will depress the same and movesaid `levers to simultaneously elevate the otherV evenermember into the plane of the top surface of said rails where it is rigidly retained during` vsaid, engagement of said flanges with said depressed evener member.
