Description

waterproof, and also to treat easier,

T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that'l, CHARLES J. com, a citizen of the ing at Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Composition for Waterproofing Leather, Canvas, and other Cloth, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a composition of matter which may be used to treat leather upholstering such as the top and seats of, automobiles to render them the tops and seats when made of canvas or other cloth with the same composition of matter to render them waterproof and leave the'leather and cloth after treatment soft and pliable. Also to treat canvas bags and sacks so that the material held in such bags and sacks will not become useless on account of water entering the sacks, and at the same time to retain all of the material carried in said sacks or bags, such as Portland cement, plaster of Paris and many other dust like reparations, and these objects I accomplish by filling the pores and interstices with a pliable waterproof matter which adheres to the fabrics and which will not be sticky nor yet brittle enough to crack when the treated material is bent or crease My composition consists of the following ingredients, combined in the proportions stated, viz: I
Five quarts of good quality varnish for outside use.
Three quarts of japan sizing, composition of 1 part coach japan with one part japan gold sizing. The coach japan is made of manganese oxid, linseed oil and naphtha. The japan gold sizing is made of fossil gums, rosin, linseed oil, naphtha and manganese oxid.
Eight quarts of paint.
25 ounces of bees wax.-
25 ounces of glycerin.
10 ounces of eucalyptus oil.
6 teaspoonfuls of sweet oil.
Two gallons of a thinner such as turpentine or gasolene.
These ingredients are to be thoroughly mingled by heat and agitation.
To properly prepare and mix the ingredi ents, I take two quarts of the lightest colored durable varnish. Three quarts of NETHER- Specification of Letters Eatent.

tion of the compound before use in order to Patented Nov, 23, 192% Application as an 1a, 1919. Serial in. 296,942.".
spar varnish, 1-3 quarts pale coach japan, which is a composition of manganese oxid, linseed oil and .naphtha, 1%,,- quarts ofjapan gold. sizing, which is a combination of fossil gums, rosin, linseed oil, naphtha and manganese .oxid, 25 ounces of glycerin, 10 ounces of eucalyptus oil, six teaspoonfuls of sweet oil, and shave into thin strips or small particles 25 ounces of bees wax which is added to theabove liquids, then heat the wax and all of the other ingredients by placing the vessel in which they are mixed in hot or boiling water, but not over a direct fire, until the wax is melted. When this mixture is cooled add the thinner, of two gallons of turpentine or gasolene, and thoroughly mix. If the compound is for use on leather or other fabric where a black or dark color is desired 1 add to the first mixture before heating it 1-;- quarts of black enamel paint, six quarts of black asphalt and 5 pounds of jet black coach paint.
the compound is for use on canvas or other or where light colors such as white, aluminum, blue or yellow are desired, I do not use the black enamel, as' phalt or black coach paint but use instead, white enamel 1% quarts, and five pounds of painters, flake white paint which is carbonate of lead ground in oil, with 1% quarts of any desired color paint or pigment.
By using my composition I 'am able to treat leather upholstering such as tops on automobiles to restore the finish and make the leather water proof and pliable by applying the compound'to the leather upholstering and allowing it to-dry. I am also able to treat the "canvas or other cloth upholstering by covering and saturating the cloth, whether old :or new, with a waterproofing compound which cloth pliable and moisture resistant, and give it any desired color bymixing the 1ngredients as above set out.
In treating canvas or other cloth I apply the mingled ingredinets with a paintbrush, giving it one coat, then after said coat has 7 dried, which will take about six hours,"I
apply another coat and allow it to dry, with I advise the thoroughagitaavoid any tendency of the solids to settle in the bottom of the container; however the glycerin content will preserve" the solids in a fluid and plastic condition.
will, render the Having thus described any invention I desire to secure by Letters Patent and claim l. A waterproofing composition consisting of five quarts of good quality varnish; three quarts of japan sizing; eight quarts of black paint; twenty-five ounces of bees wax; twenty-five ounces of glycerin; ten
' ounces of eucalyptus oil; six teaspoonfuls of sweet oil; and two gallons of turpentine, substantially as described.
2.- A waterproofing composition consis ing of five quarts of good quality varnish; three quarts of japan sizing; eight quarts of paint; twenty-five ounces of bees wax; twenty-five ounces of glycerinyten ounces of eucalyptus oil; six teaspoontuls of sweet oil; and two gallons of turpentine, substantially as described.
3. A waterproofing composition consisting of two quarts of light colored durable varnish; three quarts of spar varnish; 1:}; quarts of coach japan; lgquarts of japan gold size; quarts of enamel paint; five pounds of coach paint; lgpou'nds of pig'- inent any desired color; twenty-five ounces of melted bees wax; twenty-five ounces of glycerin; ten ounces of eucalyptus oil, and two gallons of turpentine.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature.
