UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOE GOLDNER, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
COMBINATION MATTRESS AND PILLOW. 4
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented NOV. 23, 1920.
Application filed March 3, 1920. Serial No. 363,008.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J on GOLDNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at 1240 College avenue, New York, in the county of Bronx and State of New York, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Combination Mattresses and Pillows, of whichthe following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and improved form of mattress. Mattresses as usually made heretofore have been of the same height throughout so that it was necessary to have a pillow at the head of the mattress in order to allow the user to sleep comfortably.
According. to my invention a new and improved form of mattress is made in which thehead portion is gradually raised above the body portion thereof so that the effect of the'pillow is assisted or the pillow may beentirely removed. A mattress of the kind herein described is particularly advantageous for the use of an infant, as the use of pillows is considered bad practice by many physicians as this tends to deform their backs.
Other objects of my invention will be set. forth in the following description and drawings, which illustrate a preferred em-' bodiment thereof.
Figure l is a perspective View of the mattress.
Fig. 2 is the same as Fig. .1,- a part of one side of the cover ofthe mattress being removed. v I
Fig. 3 is a section along the line 3-3 of fl he mattress is made of a number of layers 1 of some soft material, fiveof them being shown in this embodiment.
These layers are inclosed within an inner cover of, canvas or other suitable strong material .6 which is inclosed by an outer cover 5 of anyusual material. I 1
The body portion of the mattress is made up in the'usual way which need not be further described as in itself it is well known and forms no part of my invention.
At the head portion of the mattress, the layers of stufling are equally divided so that in this embodiment the division is'made in the middle of the middle layer'of stufling, so that the upper stuffing of the head portion consists of two and one-half layers and the lower stufling of the head portion consists springs being located in the space inclosed of the same. After the layers have been so separated, and before the sewing up is com-'- pleted, a series of coil springs 2 are inserted between the upper and lowerparts of the. head stufling.
Cords 3 are sewed to the upper and lower partsof the head stuifing in the usual way so as to cause the coil springs2 to be somewhat compressed, which also causes a compression of the upper and lower parts of the head stuffing of the mattress. The lower ends of the coil springs 2 are bent in so that they pierce into the canvas lining 8 of the head portion of the mattress, and stitching 9 secures the turned in ends of the springs 2 to the said lining 8.
After the mattress has been formed as shown in Fig. 2, the sewing up of the exterior cover 5 is completed in the usual manner.
The mattress thus producedhas a body portion of the usual shape and resiliency and a head portion which preferably is uniformly inclined "to the body portion and comprises a compressed upper stufling and a compressed lowerstufling and an intermediate series of compressed coil springs."
Because of this difference in the compression of the filling of the head portion which includes the stuffing of the springs, and the filling of the body portion which consists of the stuffing alone, a very comfortable mattress is secured.
- I have shown a preferred embodiment of my invention but it is clear that numerous changes and omissions could be made without departing-from its spirit.
. cla1m:.
1. A mattress comprising a body portion containing stufiing and a head portion containing an upper and lower layer of stuffin which is more compressed than the stuffing of the body portion, and an intermediate lawer of compressed coil springs, 2. ,A mattress comprising a body portion containing stufling and a head portion con-, taining an upper and lower layer of stufiing, the said upper and lower layers of stuffing having an inner lining, and a series of coi by said inner lining, the said coil springs being secured to the said inner linin In testimony whereof I hereunto a x my v signature.
