GLASS COMPANY,
KNOCKDOWN summ ts-PA KAGE.
Application filed May 8, 1919.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, WALTER G. SEABOLD,
. a citizen of the United States of America,
a resident of Alton, in the county of Madh son, State of Illinois, have inventedcertain new' and useful Improvements in Knockdown Shipping-Packages, of which the following-is a full, clear, and exact de scription, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a shipping package which may be in the form either of a crate or box, the "invention having forits object the production of a shipping package of knock down construction comprising a few simple elements detachably secured to each other in a simple andinexpensive manner. With this object in view, the package comprises 7 wall sections fitted to each other in overlapping relation so that said wall sections brace each other, andftop and bottom'sections secured to the wall'sections and embracing them to hold the wall sections overlapping and bracin relation. v
Figure I is a perspective of my package in conditionfor use.
Fig. H is perspective of two of the adjoining wall sections, in the positions-assumed when about to be assembled.
Fig. H1 is a perspective of the bottom section of my package.
in the accompanying drawings, 1 have shown my invention embodied in a shipping crate, and will describe it as so embodied, with the understanding that the package may partake of any'other desired form, for
example, that of a box. V
ly shipping package is of rectangular form and comprises a bottom section A, a top section B and side sections C and D.
T he bottom and top sections A and B are similar in structure. each including marginal end pieces 1, intermediate end pieces l and flange pieces 2 to which the end pieces are secured. thereby forming a rectangular frame in which the flange pieces constitute flanges of the frame. The end pieces 1 of the top and bottom sections, adjoin two of the parallel flange pieces 2 with the object in View which will be hereinafter made clear.
The side sections C are similar and each of said sections comprises a pair of uprights Specification of I etters Patent.
of the uprights 3 and pieces and top sections A shipping I Patented Nov. 23, 1920. Serial- No. 295,745. b
3 and cross pieces 4 joining said uprights intermediate of the ends of the uprights, the end 'portio'ns of said uprights being preferably free of any cross pieces. The side sections comprise uprights 5 and cross pieces 6 joining said uprights intermediate of the endsof the uprights ing of greater length than the distance between the outside faces of the uprights 5, so that said cross pieces include abutment extensions 7, the utility of which will be hereinafter explained. Said "abutment extensions of the cross pieces 6 equal in length to the combined thickness 4 "in each side section C as shown in Fig. I. -1
Two parallel'fiange pieces "2 of the bottom and top sections A and B are provided near their ends with bolt holes 2*, these bolt holes being thereby located at the fourcorners of the sections. are provided, respectively, near their ends with bolt holes 3 and 4 which. when the package is assembled, register with the bolt holes 9/ in the flange pieces '2- 'ofthe bottom and Band receive the bolts 8 by which the'bottom andthe top sections of the package-are secured to the wall sections C and D, when said wall sections are assembled in a manner about to be described In assembling my "knock down shipping packagefone pair of the side section's G or D is first introduced into the bottom 'section A so that its uprights will be seated upon the marginal end pieces 1 of said bottom section with the bolt holes in the lower ends of the uprights of said sections in registration with the bolt holes 2 in one pair of the flange pieces of the bottom section. The other pair of side sections are then in- 5, said cross pieces beare preferably as The uprights 3 and 4 trodnced into the bottom section and seated V on the marginal end'pieces with the bolt holes in the these sections in registration with the bolt' holes in the flanges of the bottom section and the bolt holes at the lower ends of the up rights of the sections first introduced. W hen the side sections have been'so mounted in the bottom section they are supported by the marginal endpieces 1 of the bottom section and as the bolt holes are properlydisposed to secure such results, the holes through the flange pieces and through the lower ends of the uprights so register that lower ends of the uprights of the bolts 8 at the bottom of the package may be readily passed through saidbolt holes for the purpose of securing the side sections to the flange pieces of the bottom section, with the uprights of the two pairs 01"- side sections fitted to each other in ping and bracing relation. The extensions 7 or the cross pieces oithe side sections 1) eXtend beyond tie outer sides or the uprights of these sections when the side sections are assembled and serve as abutments for the sections G locatedat angles thereto With the resuit i bracing the side sections relative to each other.
After the side sections have been secured to the bottom section in the' rnanner c2;- plained, a similar procedure is followed with respect to the application of the top section B to the side sections and the bolt holes in the flange pieces of the top section are placed in registration. with the bolt holes in the upper ends of the uprights'of the side tions and the bolts 8 the top of the paclc age are positioned in said bolt holes to detachably secure the top section to the side sections.
[he herein described knock down shi ping package may be expeditiously asse bled and knocked down forreturn shipinen in coiiapsed condition, with consequent reduction in the cost of transportation for the return'shipment and reuse.
I claim:
1. A shipping package comprising a pair of s1de sections having uprights, a second pair of side sections having uprights separably fitting against the uprights of the first named side sections, and top and bottom sections detach-ably secured to the uprights of said side sections. I
2. A shipping package comprising a pair of-side sections havmg uprights, a second pair of side sections having uprights separably fitting against the uprights of the first namedside sections, and top-and botsaid flange pieces tom sections having flange pieces surrounding the end portions of all of said uprights and detachably secured thereto.
3. A shipping package comprising a pair of side sections having uprights, a second pair of side sections having uprights separably fitting against the uprights of the first named side sections, top and bottom sections having flange pieces surrounding the end portions of all of said uprights, and fastening means extending through said flange pieces and uprights whereby the side sections and top and bottom detachably secured to] one another.
4. A shipping package comprising a pair of side sections having uprights, a second pair of side sections arranged at angles to the first mentioned side sections-and having uprights fitting against the uprights oi the first mentioned side sections, the end portions of said uprights abutting against each other and having registering bolt holes, top and bottom sections provided with bolt holes registering with the registering bolt holes in said uprights, and bolts extending through the bolt holes in and uprights whereby said top and bottom sections and side sections are detachably secured toone another.
' 5. A shipping package comprising a pair of side sections including uprights and cross pieces, a second pair of'side sections including uprights and cross: pieces arrange at angles to the first mentioned side sections, the uprights of the pairs of side sections abutting against one another and the cross pieces of one pair of the side sections having extensions overlapping theedges of the cross pieces of the other side sections, and top and bottom sections detachably secured to the uprights of said side sections,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I hereunto aflix my signature.
