Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN Boone's rLaNNnnv, or rrr'rsnnneer; PENNSYLVANIA, AssIeNon' To FLANNERY sons coirraNr, or rrrrsncnen, PENNSYLVANIA.
INSTALLATION GF-STAYBOLT STRUCTURES ron BOILERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 23, 1920.
Application filed September 10, 1919. Serial No. 322,867.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, corn? :ctoonss FLAN- NnnY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented (ertain new and nsefullmprovemerits in installation oi Staybolt Structures for Boilers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it apnertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in the installation of stay bolt structures in boilers.
In stay bolt structures wherein the head of the bolt is flexibly mounted in a seat formed in the outer sheet of a boiler and is covered by a cap welded to the outer sheet, it is essential that the cap be properly located and centered with relationto the bolt opening in the boiler sheet and also to the head of the bolt so as to ovide for proper and equal clearame around the bolt head. It is difficult to properly space the cap when the head of the bolt and the opening are concealed by the cap, and it has been proposed, in assembling the parts to place a loose ring-shaped spacing member, preferably of destructible material that will be soluble in water or steam or that will be disintegrated by the contact with water or steam and the grinding action of the head of the bolt, over or around the bolt head so that in placing the cap the latter will have to inclose the spacing member.
This method is however open to objections, one of which is that when the boiler maker is depended upon to place the spacing member around the bolt head prior to welding the sleeve to the sheet there is always the chan -e that he will ignore or overlook the spacing member and place the sleeve in what he thinks to be the proper location. Again, if he employs the loose spacing member, it requires the insertion of some tool into the sleeve to hold the parts in position while the sleeve is being welded to the sheet and then after the welding has been finished he must remove the inserted member and in some instances the spa'ing member and then screw on the cap.
My present invention con ists in a sleeve adapted to rest on the outer sheet and around the side of the bolt head in the latter the bore of the sleeve at its inner end being but slightly greater than the greatest diam eter of the bolt head, and enlarged: above its inner end so as to provide for the necessary movements of the bolt head under the unequal expansive action of the inner and enter sheets to which the bolt isvconnected.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a view in section through the outer and inner sheets, sleeve and cap, the bolt being shown in elevation. F ig. 2 is a similar view of a modified construction; Fig. 3 is a view in bottom plan of the sleeve shown in Fig. 2 and Fig. 4 is a view in vertical section of another modification.
1 represents the outer sheet of a boiler provided with a bolt hole 2, the upper portion of the latter being curved as shown to form a concave seat 3 for the head 4 of a stay bolt. The head 4 of the bolt is flexibly mounted in the curved seat 3, the portion of the hole opening 2 at the inner side of I the curved seat being sufliciently large to permit of all necessary movements of the stay bolt due to the expansion of the two sheets.
6 is the sleeve welded to the outer sheet. the bore 7 of the sleeve at its inner end being approximately the diameter of the outer end of the curved seat 3 and forming in effect a continuation of the same. The bore of the sleeve widens out or enlarges 0utwardly, the enlargement in the construction shown in Fig. 1 being in a gradual curve so that the diameter of the here will be the greatest at its outer end. The head of the bolt projects beyond the outer surfa'e of Sheet 1, hence when the sleeve is applied to the sheet over the bolt head, it will be guided into centered and correct position by its contact with the latter, and cannot be seated on the sheet and over the bolt head in any position but its correct one, and when seated, can be welded with its cap 7 screwed thereto.
The sleeve 6 becylindrical or angular exteriorly, and is provided at its upper end with internal threads for the atta'rhment of the cap 7 It is evident that instead of making the inward proiection at the lower end of the sleeve in t e form of a cont nuous ring as shown in Fig. 1. it may be in the form of lugs or proiecti n") as shown in Figs 2 and 8, the projections being sufliciently numer us to properly center the s eeve with relation to the bolt head, and instead of sleeve can be of the Mennie type as shown in Fig. 4:. With this latter construction the V inner or open end of the sleeve 6 is provided with an lnwardly projecting flange adapted to make a close fit with the head of the bolt or instead of a continuous flange it may have a plurality of projections as in Fig. 3.
I make no claim'in this application to a spacing member independent of the cap and'bolt head and between the same for centering the cap with relation to the bolt head as such structure is disclosed and claimed in my pending application Serial. No. 314,085 filed July 29th, 1919.
With this improvement the operator can place the sieve with the cap screwed therein over and around the bolt head, the mere placement of the sleeve over the head operating automatically to center the sleeve with relation to the bolt head, after which it can be welded to the sheet without any further manipulation or measurements.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. In a stay bolt structure, the combination of an outer sheet'having a hole for the passage of a bolt and a recessed seat for the head of the bolt, and a sleeve covering the bolt head the said sleeve having integral means restricting the bore of the sleeve adjacent the inner end of the latter and adapted to engage the head for centering the sleeve with relation to the said head.
2. In a stay bolt structure, the combination of an outer sheet having a hole for the passage of a bolt and a recessed seat for the head of the bolt and a sleeve covering the bolt head the said sleeve having a continu ous integral projection within and adjacent the inner end of the bore to engage the head of the bolt and center the sleeve with relation to said head.
8. In a stay bolt structure, the combina tion of an outer sheet having a hole for a bolt and a recessed seat for the head of the bolt, a bolt, a sleeve having a bore therethrough, the diameter of the said bore being greatest above the bolt head, and of approximately the size of said head at or adjacent the inner end, and a screw cap closing the outer end of said bore.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification 1n the presence of a witness.
JOHN ROGERS FLANNERY.
