RESERVOIR-VALVE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARCHIBVALD G. SHAVER, a' citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reservoir-Valves, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to improvements in reservoir valves and is designed particularly for use in the train control systems as shown in my co-pending applications, filed April 25, 1919, Serial'Nos. 292,545 and 292,548, one object of the invention being the provision of a valve which is positive in its actions, which will move to the desired position by gravity in case of a failure of any of its parts, and which will absolutely prevent air from passing through the main reservoir to the engineers brake valve under any abnormal condition.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a valve of this type which is so designed as to be easily made and assembled and which has few parts to get out of order.
In the accompanying drawings is illustrated in section the complete valve in normal condition and asconnected to the piping.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the pipe leading to the engineers brake valve, not shown, and connected to the main sections 2, 3 and 4, through the normally closed valve A. Connected'by means of the members 5, 15 and 16, is the main valve-M, which is constructed so as to provide a chamber 6 having an outlet through the port 7 into the chamber 8 so that air may pass through the pipe 4 from the main reservoir to the engineers brake valve. The casing 17 of chamber 13 is internally threaded to receive the threaded end of the coil carrying member 18, provided with a removable head 19 so that the coil 20 and its armature 21 and stem 22 may be inserted, the stem 22 being adapted to project into the chamber 13 to control the two valves C and D, the coil when energized, normally holding the valve D closed so that air is permitted to pass through the port 9 into the by-pass 1O to the lower end of the chamber 11. This causes the piston A to be elevated and the piston'E, mounted in the reduced end 12 of the chamber 11, is held upwardly so that the port 7 is open. the coil 20 the valves C and D reverse their position so that the air pressure will be upon the small piston E, moving the same downwardly so that air is exhausted through the chamber 11, through the channel 10 and port 9, into the chamber 13 through the exhaust pipe 14, the valve B seating'and closing the port 7, the spring I) assisting in this operation and assuring the closing of the valve B. The lower end of the chamber 11 is closed by means of the removable plug 23, while the valve guiding plugs 24 and 25 are also detachably connected to the valve casing, these projecting into the chamber 6, It will be noted that all the members are so constructed as to normally fall by gravity so that any failure of air or electriclty will cause the valve B to be closed, while the failure of electricity alone will permit the valve B to be closed and the valve C to be closed.
Also connected to the valve casing is a block 26 of insulation, for carrying the conductors 27 and 28, which supply current to the coil 20.
It will be noted in this construction that the failure of either of the air or electrical current will permit the valve to operate by is a great feature in a device of this character. 1
ThiSg-Vfil-VG is designed for use in conjunction with em train control system as heretofore mentioned and normally permits air to flow from the main reservoir to the engineers valve through the chamber 6 and to trap the air in such chamber under abnormal conditionsor when the coil 20 is deenergized and air is' cut off from the chamber 11.
What I claim as new is 1. A reservoir valve including a main casing having a main air inlet and a main air outlet port, said casing being provided with two chambers, one in communication with each of said ports, with a valve controlled port between the chambers, said casing being further provided with a double diametered piston chamber, a single stem, two pistons of for holding the pistonnpwardly and its lid valve open or for exhausting the air pressure to permit the first valve to close.

A. reservoir valve including a main casing having three main chambers, two of said chambers being the entrance and exhaust chambers and having interposed therebetween a valve seated port, a piston mounted for sliding movement in the remaining chamber, a valve connected to the piston for controlling said port, said valve being held open by air pressure on said piston, and elec trically controlled means for controlling the supply of air to said piston when the valve is open and for exhausting the air from below the piston to permit the closing of the valve.
