BRAKE-PIPE VALVE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom it may (zoomr]:
Be it known that I. Anounmnn (l. Snmvnn, a. citizen of the United States, residing, at Chicago, in the county of (look and bit-ate of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in BraluvPipe Valves, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to m'iprovements 1n brake pipe valves, especially designed for use in connection with my co-pending train control applications,iiledeven date herewith, Serial "Nos. 292,545 and 292,548, tiled Apr. 25, 1919, one object of the invention being the provision of a simple construction of valve in which both electrical and pneunatie means are provided for controlling the flow of air for venting, the air brake system, in which a single. casing carries the complete mechanism, and in \vhirh the parts thereof, due to any failure, will operate by gravity, this valve being; primarily an air released valve while the valve shown in my copending application, #292,549, is an air trapping valve.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a valve of this type which is simple and durable in construction and which is positive in its function.
In the accompanying, drawings is illustrated a transverse vertical central sectional view through the complete valve, showing the parts in normal condition when the coil is energized.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral '1 designates the brake pipe which has connected thereto a nipple 2, a normally open valve 3. and a nipple 4:. whereby the present valve A is connected for controlling the flow of air to the exhaust of vent pipe 12. In this ehnstruction, the main body of the valve is cast and is provided with the receiving chamber 5, the auxiliary chamber 6, which is provided with a removable noz-- zle or bushing T, which is made removable so that different venting, capacities may be employed.

In normal condition, the valve 17 is held in the position so that air is permitted to flow through the upperend of the port 16 to the channel 1+ of the chamber 10. This causes the piston 13 to be elevated and holds the valve 11 seated. Thus air is prevented irom entering the exhaust pipe 1.
lllounted in the lower end of the chamber 18 is the threaded boss 20 ot' the casing'Ql which carries therein the magnet coil 23, the armature 22, and the valve operating stem the cover 95 holding these parts in proper position. and yet rendering them accessible when necessary. lVhen the coil '23 is dci nercized and its armature 22 falls, the position of the valves 17 and 15 reverse, the upper end of the port 16 being closed so that the air in the chamber 10 is permitted to escape through the channel 14, the port 16 into the chamber 18, and finally through the pipe 19 to the atmosphere. As pressure thus permitted to exert itself upon the valve 11 and is also exerted by the spring 11', the valve and piston 13 move downwardly, opening the port 8 and permitting air to he vented through the exhaust pipe 12.
The plug 26 is provided to permit access to the plunger 13 in the valve 11, while the valve stcm guiding plunger-s 27 and 28 are mounted in the casing to permit access to the stems of the valves 11 and 15. In order to permit access to the member 7 the plug 29 is provided. The block 30 of insulation is attached to the casing of the main valve and has the conductors 31 and 32 leading therefrom and connected to the magnet coil 22.
It will thus be seen that With this construction the valves 15 and 17 will control the admission ot air to controlling: plunger 13 and thus when the coil is energized the valve 11 will be closed.
This construction of valve is readily connected to the train pipe of an air brake s vs tom so that under normal conditions the air is held against escape to the atmosphere,
Leading 7 from the lower end of the chamber lOis a that is under conditions when the coil is energized and air pressure is permitted to hold the valve 11 closed, the deenergization of the coil causing air to be shut ofi from the lower end of the piston and vented to the atmosphere so that the pressure above the valve 11 escapes and will cause the opening of the valve and the consequent exhausting of the train pipe to the atmosphere.
lVhat I claim as new is:
l A brake pipe valve, including a main member having three communicating chamhers, the outlet between the second and third chambers being a valve port, said third chamber bein I provided with an exhaust port, an electricall" controlled means for by-passingthe air rom the first chamber to the-lower end of the third chamber, a valve .for controlling the valve port, and a plunger connected to the valve and mounted in the third chamber for actuating the valve.
2. A brake pipe valve, including a main member having three communicating chambers, the outlet between the second and third chambers being a valve port, said third chamber being provided with an exhaust rt, an electrically controlled means for y-passing the air from the first chamber to the lower endof the third chamber, a valve for controlling the valve port, a plun ger connected to the valve and mounted in the third chamber for actuating the valve, said electrical control means including two oppositely disposed valves connected for alternate movement, an electro-magnet, and means connected to the armature thereof and to the valves for operating the valves.
2. A brake pipe valve, including a main casing having an air inlet and an air outlet, said casing bein provided with three chambers interposed etween said inlet and outlet and in communication with each other, the second and'third chambers being in communication through-a valve port, the third chamber constituting an exhaust and piston chamber, said casing being further provided with a channel leading from the lower end of the third chamber and in communication with the first chamber, and the outside air, two valves one to permit communication between the first and third chambers and the other to exhaust the third chamber to the outside air, a valve for controlling the first mentioned valve port, a piston mounted in the third chamber and connected to the valve and normally closed by air pressure in the lower endof -the chamber, and electrical means for operating the piston.
