IMPROVEMENT INSHOVELS AND SPADES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,954, dated February 18, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM T. WELLS and GEORGE E. MOREHOUSE, of Decatur, in
the county of Macon and State of Illinois, have invented certain Improvements in Shovels and Spades, of which the following is a specification Our invention relates to an improvement in shovels and spades; and consists in the corrugation of the strap or plate by which the handle is secured to the blade of a shovel, spade, or scoop, so as to strengthen them at the junction of the blade and handle.

A represents the blade of a scoop-shovel, and B the handle. 0 D are straps or plates by which the handle and blade are secured together. c d are corrugations or beads formed in the straps or plates to strengthen them. In
Fig. 3 is shown a spade, in which the blade E and plates or straps F G are formed and made a part of the blade. lhese plates or-straps have the corrugations or beads, as shown at fg.
Shovels which are made in the same manner as the spades, with the plates and blades out of one piece of metal, can be formed with the corrugation or bead in the plates.
By this formation of the corrugation or head the implement is strengthened at its weakest point, viz., at the junction of the handle and blade.
We claim as our invention- The corrugations or beads c d on the plates or straps O D, by which the blade of a shovel or spade is secured to the handle to strengthen the same at the junction of the blade and handle, substantially as shown and described.
