Description

E. P. WELCH.
Middlings Purifiers.
N0.135,952, Patented Feb.18,187 3 AM. PHOTO-lITHOGRAPH/L 00. MY (osaanns'smocsss) UNITED STATEs PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD P. WELOH, OF GEORGETOWN, nIsTRIoT OF COLUMBIA, AssIcnoR To HIMSELF, JA Es H. WELOH, RosIA w. wELcH, HERBERT r. WELOH, AND JAMEs A. MALONEY, OF sAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN MlDDLlNGS-PURIFIERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,952, dated February 18, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD PRIcE WELCH,
of Georgetown, in the District of Columbia,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machinery for Purifying Mid-' dlin gs, of which the following is a specification The invention herein claimed constitutes an improvement upon the apparatus shown in Letters Patent of the United States, No. 133,- 509, granted to me November 26, 1872; and consists in combining with the rotary screen therein shown, brushes rotating across the face of the screen. My invention further consists in combining with said screen and brushes a perforated air-pipe surrounding the periphery of the screen, the blast from which counteracts the centrifugal action of the screen upon the flour and thus retards its discharge.
The accompanying drawing shows in Figure 1 a side elevation, partly in section, of my improved apparatus and Fig.2, a horizontal section therethrough on the line 00 :c of Fig. 1.
The machine being fully described in the Letters Patent aforesaid those portions only relating to the subject-matter claimed will be herein described. I
A screen, A, revolves upon a spindle, B.
One or more brushes, 0, (in this instance four are shown,) are mounted on spindles 1), so as to revolve in a plane substantially parallel to the screen; but as the bristles are long and flexible an exact parallelism of movement of the brush and screen is not essential. The combined rotation of the screen and brush on independent axes produces a spiral scouring action on the screen, and, in combination with the blast, serves most effectually to clear both the screen and brush and thus prevents clogging. Aperforated pipe, E, surrounds the screen, and a blast through said pipe from a source by preference independent of the usual blast, which is also employed in this case, serves to counteract the centrifugal action of the screen and prevent the too rapid escape of the flour therefrom.
It is obvious that a single large brush rotating faster than or in a direction opposite to that of the screen might be substituted for the brushes shown in the drawing.
1. In a middlings-purifier, the combination of the rotaryscreen with a clearing brush or brushes rotating parallel therewith, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, in a middlings-purifier, of the rotary screen with the encircling jetpipe to counteract the centrifugal action of the screen, substantially as before set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name.
EDWARD P. WELGH.
