WITNESSES A TTOR/VEVS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEO SONDEREGGER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF T0 WILLIAM E.
MEYER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., AND ONE-EALF T0 MEYSON MANUFACTURING GOM- PANY, INC., OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
Application filed June 21,
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, Leo Sonnnnnoonn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of the Bronx, in the county of Bronx and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved lVindow-Cleaner, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved window cleaner more especially designed to permit the user to clean the outer faces of the upper and lower window sashes.
Another object is to permit of readily placing the window cleaner in position on the window and manipulating the cleaner without requiring undue physical exertion 011 the part of the operator.
Another object is to provide a window cleaner which is very simple and durable in construction and is exceedingly light t6 permit of conveniently handling it on moving it about.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention proved window cleaner with parts in sec- I tion and shown applied to a window, the latter being shown in cross section;
Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the improved window cleaner on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a rear sectional elevation of the same on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a face view of the wiper; and
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of modified form of the improved window cleaner.
The main frame 10 ot the window cleaner is made approximately U-shaped and comprises inner and outer side arms 11 and 12 and a connecting member 13 connecting the WINDOW-CLEANER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patent d N 16 1920 1920. Serial N0. 390,505.
lower ends of the side arms with each other. The connecting member13 is mounted to turn in a bearing 14 having a base 15 adapted to rest on the top of the window sill 16 and the said base 15 is provided at 1ts rear end with a downwardly extending lug 17 engaging the rear outer edge of the window sill 16 to hold the base 15 and its bearing 14 against sliding inwardly. The front of the base 15 is providedwith an upwardly extending flange 18 on which is fastened the upper end of a strap 19 carrymg at its lower end a stirrup 20 adapted to be engaged by the foot of the user to securely hold the base 15 and its bearing 14 in position on the window sill 16. "The lower portion of the flange 18 extends vertically and is adapted to abut against the outer edge of the sill 16 to hold the window cleaner in proper position when cleaning the outer face of the upper sash. It will be noticed-that the bearing 14 and its base 15 can be readily moved sidewise on the window sill 16 to a desired position. and then by the operator engaging the stirrup 20 and bearing down on the same the hear ing can be securely held in the adjusted position on the window sill.
On the inner side arm 11 is mounted to slide upand down a handle member 25, preferably made tubular. and terminating at its upper end in a handle 26 to permit the operator to slide the handle member up and down on the arm 11. On the outer side arm 12 is mounted to slide up and down a wiping member 30. preferably made tubular. and provided at its u per cud with plug 31 trom which extends a supportinc rod 32 on which the wiper 33 is mounted to swing on a suitable pivot 34. The wi er 33 is pre erahlv of rectangular shape and is provided with a covering of chamois or other suitable wiping material. It will be noticed that the wiper 33 can rock sidewise on the pivot 34, to n ure proper cleaniuq oi the out r face of the window pane. The suppor ing rod 2 is provided near its lower end with an inwardlv extending offset 35 to the wiper 33 with the outer :face of the window pane and without the wiping member 30 and the outer side arm 12 coming in contact with the frame of the window "sash. V
The lower end of the handle member is provided with a collar 40 on which is pivoted a link 41 extending transverse above the window' sill 1'6 and below the lower sash to be cleaned, which is in partly opened position. The outer end of the link 41 is pivotally connected at 42 with a lever 43 fulcrumed at.4 4 on the connecting member 13' to swing up and down. The outer end of the lever 43 is connected by link 45 with a collar 46 arranged on the lower end of the wiping member 30.
When the handle member 25 is moved upward by the operator then the link 41 imparts an upward swinging movement to the lever 43, which by the link 45 imparts a similar upward sliding movement to the wiping member 30 and consequently to the wiper 33, and during this movement the operator by swinging the handle member 25 sidewise imparts a similar sidewise swinging movement to the U-shaped frame 10 and consequently to the wiping member 30 and its wiper 3 3 to move the lattersidewise on the outer face of the window pane to clean the same, When the operator moves the handle .member I 25 downward a similar downward movementis given to the wiping member 30 and its wiper 33. By reference to Fig. 1, it will be noticed that the connecting link 41 is made segmental to permit of lowering the window sash sufiiciently for the wiper 33 to reach the upper portion of the ,window ,pane when manipulating the window CIQEIHGIZMZLS abovedescribed. The lever 43 isalso preferably provided with an offset, as shown in Fig. 1, to hold the lever out of contact with the bottom rail of the window sash when the latter is moved into lowermost position.
In the modified form shown in Fig. 5, the lever connection between the handle; and wiping members 25 and 30 is by the use of a lever 50 fulcrumed at 51 on the lower portion of the outer frame arm12, and the inner end of this lever is pivotally connected by a link 52 with the handle member 25 while the outer end of this lever is connected by a link 53 with the wiping member 30. The action of this lever connection is the same as above described in reference to the lever 43 and its links41, 45 so that further dercription of the same is not deemed necessary. V v g It willbe noticed that by the arrangement described the operator can readily place the window cleaner in position on the window and move the same sidewise on the window sill for the wiper to reach every part he window pane on the operator moving he handlemember 25 up and down and i"ewfse it will also be noticed that on Having thus described my'invention, I
claim-as new and desired to secure by Letters Patent:
