I I PATRICK CHURCHILL, OF MAINGHES'IE'R, ENGLAND.
BUOYANT LIFE-SAVING FITTING AND APPLIANGE FOR SH IPS.
- that type of fittings or appliances employed in connection with ship deck houses or cabins, which in case of shipwreck can be occupied by persons on board and detached from the deck to allow it to float on the water and thereby save life.
The invention has for its object to improve said type of fittings or appliances to permit a more ready and rapid detachment of said house or cabin from the deck, when required to float on the water.
A deck house or cabi'n'fitting or appliance of said type according to thisinvention comprises chiefly a series of screw-threaded rotary spindles extending through each end wall of deck house or cabin in the direction of the ship side bulwarks and the inner ends of which are each provided with a hand wheel or other suitable rotating gear and the outer end adapted to engage in sockets secured to the inner side of the bulwarks or to a part of the deck secured adjacent to said end walls, whereby said house or cabin can be readily secured to bulwark or deck, and in case of necessity rapidly detached therefrom for floating on the water.
I obtain this object by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawing Figures 1 and 2 are respectively a side view and end view of a ship having a cabin or room secured to the deck thereof in accordance with this invention.
Figs. 3 and 4 are respectively on an enlarged scale, a detached sectional side-view and plan of the cabin attachingand releasing means.
Figs. 5, 6 and 7 are sectional views of two modifications of the attaching and releasing means.
Figs. 8 and 9 are respectively a sectional end view and side view and Fig. 10 a side view showing the invention applied to such as a chart or wireless room on the deck of the ship.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4, a is said Specification of Letters Patent. "Patented. N 16 1920 Application filed October 25, 1919. Serial No. 333,294.
cabin or room which eiztends" across the whole width of the deck and comprises a bottom 6 whlch may be formed hollow to serve 7 as a water tank, four sides two of which may I be slantlng and a ceiling the outside of which is provided with railings and serves as a deck rendered accessible from the ordinary deck by means of a ladder or stairs and provided with a companion-way entrance and stairs reaching down to the floor of the house'or cabin;
p f/ are a series of brackets, secured to the inner sides of the house or cabin walls adj acent to the bulwark of the ship and have mounted therein the said screw-threaded spindles e each provided with a hand wheel h.
Each inner. side of the bulwark 0 is furnished with a series of sockets i in which the freeend of said spindles e are adapted to engage and lock the cabin or room to the bulwark c and thus prevent same from lifting off the deck 03. 7
Above the brackets g are secured to the inside of the cabin or room :end another series of brackets k ineach of which is also mounted a screw-threaded spindle f having a hand wheel m.
The outer end of each of these spindles f has connected therewith a swivel n secured to the inside of a plate 0 hinged to the outside of the cabin or room at p and overlapping the outside of the bulwark 0.
The swivel spindles f are adapted to draw the said hinged plates 0 tightly against the plates 9 secured to the ships side and thereby securely lock the cabin or room laterally in position on the deck.
By unscrewing the said spindles the cabin or room can be instantly released from the deck, andthus floated.
Figs. 8, 9 and 10 show a cabin or room cured, a support 6 in which is mounted a shaft provided ,at each end with a hand wheel 8 and in the middle with a chain wheel which by means of an endless chain 10 is connected with a chain wheel 11 secured onsaid cross shaft 4.
It will thus be seen that said cabin or room may be locked to the deck and bulwark or released therefrom either from the top or the interior thereof byrotating the ch in wheel by means-of the "h and --Wheel-'m or the chain wheel 8 each furnished with the handle. i
The cabin or room may be furnished with berths and a wireless installation.
The top of the cabinor room may also be arranged to carry one or more lifeboats and. have masts and anchors.
I claim:
1. A shipis d'eck room or cabinrfitting of the typehereiii1beiore specified, comprising a series ot screw-threaded rotary spindles extending through each end wall of the deck house or cabin in'the direction oithe ships side bulwarks, means secured to the inner end of each of said spindles for rotating same, sockets securedto the inner side of the bulwarks or the deck in which the outer end of said spindlesare adapted to engage to secure said house or cabin to the ship and permit 0f rapidly detaching same for @fioatingon the water, for thepurpose specifiedf 2. In a ships deck room or cabin fitting of the type-claimed :in claim 1, a second series of screw-threaded rotary-spindles l0- cated'in saldend walls above said first series of spindles, a cover .dependingly lunged to the outside or each said well ends with lower end overlapping the top of the bulwvark, and a -swivel 'ni'it carried by said lower end in'vwh ch the outer end of said spindles engage, Ffor -thepurpose set forth. 8. A deck cabin or room as claimed in claim 1, comprising at each end two series of screw-threaded spindles located above one another, and a tooth gear which rotatively connects together said two spindles, for the'purpose s'pecifiedj V i 4. A deck cabin or room as claimed in claim 'l, comprising at each end a series of screw-threaded spindles, a cross shaft in COIHlGClZlOIl' with each ser es of said spin- V PATRICK CHURCHILL.
