VALTIN F BOEHM, OF CHICAGO; ILLINOIS.
PROPELLER.
' Application filedAugust 4,
T all whom it may concern Be it known that I, VALTIN F. BonHM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful improvement in Propellers, of which tl e following is full, clear, concise, and exact description, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification.
Theinvention relates to propelling devices and particularly to these devices designed for propelling motor boats, aeroplanes and other similar motor driven-vehicles.
The invention has among its various 0bjects the production of an arrangement whereby water or'air craft and other above referred to vehicles may be propelled atan increases speed without demanding a relatively greater engine speed.
It is an object of the invention to produce a structure for accomplishing this end, which is simple, and demands only few parts most of which may be bought in the open market.
The invention willbe explained in con nection with a motor boat, and in conjunction with the accompanying drawings which show same applied thereto, and in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of the stern of a launch and having invention applied thereto, and
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1 looking in the directions of the arrows.
Generally speaking the invention contemplates the use of one or more shafts having propeller provldedthereon wh1ch have both a rotary and a reciprocal mo- Specification of Letters ?atcnt.

shafts 17 and 18 respectively, they being keyed or otherwise secured to these shafts so as to cause them to reciprocate therewith, 7,
These shafts are supported in bearings 20 -20 and are provided with the stuffing boxes 21 to prevent leakage between the hull of the boat and the shaft, and have thepropeller 22 provided upon their extremities.
that the blades thereof maybe manipulated to cause a reversal of the direction of movementof the launch, without reversing the engine. have secured thereto a block 23 having the roller 24 which extends inwardlyand into the cam groove 14.- of the rotatable element 13. These blocks 23 each have an exten- These propellers may be of the usual solid type or may be designed so Each of the shafts 17 and 18' sion 25 extending outwardly 'therefrom and carry the squared'slide blocks 26'w'hich" sitions upon said shafts by the collars 28-28 which are arranged upon the opposite sides of said blocks and are permanently fastened to the shafts.
It will thus be seen that upon the rotation of the .motor shaft 10 that both of the shafts 17 and 18 will be rotated through the medium of the gears 15 and 16 which 7 mesh with the gear 12, provided uponthe shaft 10 and by virtue of the fact that the rotatable element13 is keyed to this shaft,
this element will rotate with the shaft, which through the medium of the cam slot '14 and the connection between it and the shafts 17 and 18 will cause a rotating alternating and reciprocating motion to be imparted to the respective shafts.
It is understood that the inward motion of the propeller will not impair or interfere with the forward motion of the boat, as the inclination of the blades will cause the shaft to move inwardly, therefore only upon an outward movement of these shafts is it necessary that any force to drive themlongitudinally be applied.
From'the foregolng explanation of the construction. and operation of the device,
' it is evident that the shafts Will each have imparted to them a rotating and reciprocating motion Which Will-propel the boat forwardly, also that Whentwo shafts are I ters Patent is I. In a device of the class described the combination of a drive shaft, a pair of'shafts each having a propeller provided thereon, said shafts being arranged to be rotated and reciprocated relatively to the drive shaft said drive shaft having a single rotatable member provided thereon for reciprocating both of said propeller shafts.
2. In a device of the class described the combination of a drive shaft, a pair of shafts each having a propeller provided thereon said shafts being arranged to be rotated and reciprocated relatively to the drive shaft,
, said drive shaftrcomprisinga rotatable memher having a cam for alternately reciprocating said propeller shafts.
3. In a device of the class described the combination of a'drive shaft a pair of shafts each'having a propeller provided thereon, said propeller shafts being arranged to be rotated and reciprocated relatively to the drive shaft, means provided upon the drive shaft for rotating said propeller shafts and having a single rotatable element for alter-- nately shafts. v
4. In a device of the class described the combination of a propeller shaft and a drive shaft arranged parallel to the propeller shaft, said drive shaft having a cam for rereciprocating both of said propeller ciprocating the propeller shaft and means for rotating said propeller shaft.
5.111 a device of the class describedthe combination of a drive shaft and a pair of propeller shafts each of- Which have a pre peller provided thereon said propeller shafts beingarrangcd parallel with the driveishaft, and means provided upon the drive shaft for rotating and alternately reciprocating the I propeller shafts.
6. In a device .of the class described the combination of a shaft having a vpropeller mounted thereon, a drive shaft and means arranged upon the drive shaft for rotating and reciprocating said propeller shaft.
In Witness whereof I hereunto subscribe my name this 1st day of July, A. D. 1919. VALTIN F. BOEHM.
