IMPROVEMENT IN CARTRIDGE-LOADING MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,9l3, dated February 18, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED CHARLEs ROBES, of Bridgeport, county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful improvements in mechanism for feeding metallic cases for cartridges or other similar articles of manufacture requiring automatic handling to a revolving or reciprocating plate, substantially in the manner herein set forth; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part of this specification- Figure 1 being a side elevation, in part, thereof; Fig. 2, a vertical longitudinal section, in part, of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a plan or top view of the machine complete, with the exception of the drivingshaft being represented as broken. f

Upon a suitable table, A, an upright sta-ndard, B, is secured, to which is fitted an adjustable stationary tube, C, for holding and pre senting the cases successively to the rotating or reciprocating plate D. This tube C is adjustable perpendicularly by means of a screwthread, a, and nuts b b, operating against the upper and lower sides of the head E of the standard B; and to assist in 'maintaining this tube C in an upright position a projection, F, extends from the standard B, through which passes the lower end of stationary tube C and sleeve G, hereinafter to be described. Upon the lower part of this stationary tube C is .fitted a sleeve, G, of the required length, and passing through the projection F of the standard B. This sleeve G is supported in position and operated by means of a forked arm, H, embracing it, and which sleeve is also adjustable through nuts d el and `screw-thread e upon its surface. To the lower end of this sleeve G are fitted two spring-jaws, ff, which successively grasp the case upon its periphery to raise it slightly off the preceding case to permit the latter to pass from beneath it, and then to release the raised case and allow it to descend into the next succeeding opening or cavity in the rotating or reciprocating plate D. The forked arm H, from which this sleeve G receives its motion, is secured to a vertical slide, I, fitted in ways J formed in or attached l s to the side K of the frame A. To impart an up-and-down motion, also an intermittent motion, to this slide I, a revolving-cam, M, is placed beneath its lower end g, and secured to a shaft, L; and that this slide I may follow closely the cam M a spring, 714is arranged as represented in the drawing, one end being secured to the frame A, the otherattached to the arm H thus an lip-and-down and the required intermittent motion is imparted to the sleeve G to operate the spring-jaws ff secured thereto.
The intermittent motion to the rotating or reciprocating plate D for carrying the cases 'may be given by any of the wel1- known devices in common use, and requires no further description.
After properly filling the stationary tube C with cases to be presented successively to the recesses in the plate D, motion up and down is given to the sleeve G through the forked arm l-I and rotating cam M. Commencing at the point o of the cam M, the sleeve G, containing the cases, is raised to its highest point, and the spring-jaws ff secured thereto are extended or opened by their inner surfaces bein drawn against the lower end r of the sta tiofnary tube C, permitting a case to fall into one of the openings or cavities s formed in vthe plate D to receive it, and a second case to follow and rest upon its upper end, as shown in the drawing, the lower end of the succeeding case u bein g below the lower ends ofthe springjawsfj'; then by the continued motion of the cani M the part t thereof allows the sleeve G to descend so that the jaws ff secured thereto may grasp the periphery of the upper case, and by the part 'v to raise it ed the lower case zo, atwhich instant the plate D removes this lower case zo from beneath the tube C, presenting the next succeeding recess or cavity s in the plate, and as the sleeve G continues to rise the spring-jaws f j' are again brought in con tact with the lower Vend r of the stationary tube C, opened or extended thereby, and the next succeeding case allowed to drop into a recess in the plate D, followed by the next case resting thereon, as before; thus, as the rotating cam M alternately raises and lowers the sleeve G, the cases are successively fed or delivered into the cavities in the plate D, and` 2. lhe combination of the reciprocating the'fsncceeding cases raised'off to permit of spring-jawsff with the feedingtube C enel: the. free rotation ot' the pla-teD. the plate or receiver D, substantially as and-'f What I claim as my invention, and desire to for the purpose herein specified. secure by Letters Patent, is- 3.
