Be it known that I, GEORGE WRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Von Ormy, in the county of Bexar and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements inHChairs and Counters, of which the following-is a specification.

This invention relates to chairs, and has particular reference to means for mounting achair' with relation to a counter, table or the like, so that-the chair can beslid to a position beneath the counter when not in use and readily moved to a position for use when desired, by one positioned behind the counter. I g Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a chair of particular construction, and wherein both the seat and back of the chair are relatively movable, so as to occupy positions for use as the chair is moved from beneaththe counter, and to occupy a folded position whenthe chalr is moved beneath the counter.

In carrying out my invention, I provide the front wall of the counter with a door disposed adjacenteach chair, adooropening inwardly of the counter, and simultaneously with the movement of the chair to a po ition for use. 7 V

.Each chair includes a seat portion 14 supported by the front and rear members C and D respectively, corner blocks 14 being arranged between-the rear memberJD and the seat 1 1. The rear member D projects a slight distance above the seat 14: as shown.

Each of the'membe'rs'C and D includes a fixed section 15 and a movable section 16, the latter sectlons b eing hmged at 17 to swing in the same direction, so as to assume horizontal position when the-chair is pro} ected from beneath the counter as shown in-Fig. 3, or to assume a vertical position when the chair. is positioned beneath the counter as shown in Fig. ,2. Secured to the movable section 16 of the member C adjacent each side thereof, is a pair of U-shaped i elements '18 andthrough each pair is slidably fitted a rod 19 having a broad extrem ity or endportion 20to prevent the .rod

from being separated from the elements 18.

Also secured upon the movable section 16 of the member-D, are sleeves 21 through each of which-slides the hinged member 22 the latter being hinged asat 22, to the memberD, while the forwardend-of the member l 22 is connected with a link 23. This link is i' vertically disposed and pivotally associated with a transversely disposed member 24:

The back of'theichair 26 includes. spaced iparallel members'as 1 shown in Fig. 4, these members sliding through'slots in the seat 14 of the chair, it being understood that the chair back 26 is raised when the chair is moved from beneath the counter for use and lowered when the chair is arranged beneath the counter in its folded position. For moving the chair B, I make use of two flexible elements in-- .dicated at and 31, the former being trained over a small pulley 82 mounted upon the rear wall of the counter, and thence under a pulley 33 arranged at the base of the counter, the terminal of the flexible element80 being secured to the member of the chair as at 34. The opposite end of this flexible element projects through an opening in the counter and is arranged within convenient reach of the attendant. The other element 31 is trained over a pulley 32 similar to the pulley 32 above mentioned, but this element is directly connected with the member C oi? the chair, as at35. Manifestly, when a pull is exerted upon the element 30, bythe attendant standing behind the counter, the flexible'element 3O 0p- 1 erates to project the chair B from beneath the counter A. When apullis exerted upon the flexible element 31 it moves the chair from its projected position toits folded position beneath the counter.

In PIZLCtlCQflSSLHIIlIlg that the chair is in its folded position, and arranged beneath the counter as shown in- Fig.2, and that it is desired to move the chair to a positionfor use, the flexible element 30 is pulled upon as-above stated, and the chair B is obviously projected from beneath the counter, during which time, the movable element sections 16 of the front and rear members C andQD of the chair move upon their pivots 17 from a vertical to a horizontal position as shown in Fig. 3; -However, when the chair is projected -from beneath the counter through the instrumentality of the flexible element '30, it does not assume its fulland extended po sition, as it is susceptibleof sliding movement with respect to, the horizontally theposed sections 16, and for this lpurposel provide the member D- of the chair with a handle 36-which-is adapted to be graspedby the user of .the chair for moving .the'latg ter outwardly frorn'thev counter A. When the chair is "moved inthis manner, the rod V 19 and the hinged member 22 .slide out-- wardly upon the sections 16. The broad extremity 20 of the rod 119 limits the movement' of the rod inthis direction whilethe joint'between thehingedmembers.22 and the links 23 co6perating with the sleevesf'21 limit the movementof the members 22 in an outward direction. As shown in Fig. 2 the links 23 which are. connected with the hinged members 22 and the transverse mem- .ber 2%lareinclined forwardly," it being. further noted that the back 26- of the chair is 26 of the chair to assume a position for use asshown in Fig. 3, the seat 1 1- being lowered a distance equalto the height of the movable section 16' of the member D. When it is desired to move the chair from its extended to its folded position beneath the counter, a pull is exerted upon the flexible element 31 which moves'the chair in a direction of the counter, causing the sections 16 to turn upon their pivots 17 returning the sections to their normal vertical positions. During the return of these sections to their normal'positionsthe back 36 is lowered and the seat 1 L elevated so'that as the chair moves be neath the counter the parts are returned to the position as shown in Fig. 2. The pulley 37 is suspended from the underside of. the

top of the counter and arranged over this pulley is a cable 38 one end of'which is v secured to the inovable'section 16 of the member D chair construction, while the opposite end of the cable supports the weight 89. This actsas a counter balance to facilitate the. returning of the chair and its associated parts to their normal position.

, When-the chair B is projected from beneath the counter for use, itis not spaced tar enoughfrom the front wall of the counter for the comfort of the user, so that in order to provide ample space 'for the legs and feet of the user, I provide in the front wall of the casing a' pluralityof inwardly .swinging'doors a0, one of these doors being arrangedadjacent each chair-B. Each door is connected to the adjacent chair by means of an-arm 41 which has one end pivotally connected to a-slotted link 4.2, the latter in ram being secured to a right angularly disposed slottedplate 43 mounted upon the base of the counter as shown in both Figs. 2

for thelegs or feet of the user of the chair.

It is of courseapparent that the door is automatically closed when the. chair is moved to a position beneath the counter.

While it is'rbelieved that Ifrom the foregoing description the nature andadvantages ofthe invention will be readily apparent,

I desireto have it understood that I do not limit myself to the details herein shown and described, and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.

What I claim is 1. The combination with a counter, of a chair capable of movement to a position beneath the counter, or to a position beyond the counter for use, an inwardly opening door forming a part of the front wall of the counter, and a connection between the chair and said door whereby the latter is automatically opened and closed by movement of the chair to a projected position for use or toa position beneath the counter.

2. The combination with a counter, of a chair mounted upon the'counter to be positioned beneath the latter or projected beyond the counter for use, means for controlling the movements of the chair and operable from a position behind the counter, an inwardly swinging door forming part of the front wall of the counter and arranged immediately adjacent said chair, and a connection between the chair and door, whereby the latter is automatically opened when the chair is moved to a projected position, and automatically closed when the chair is moved to a position beneath the counter;

3. The combination with a counter, of a chair mounted thereon for movement to a position beneath the counter, or formovement to a position beyond the counter, said chair including a seat and a back movable to assume position for use when the chair is projected or a folded position when the chair is moved beneath the counter.

4. The combination with a counter,'having an opening in the front thereof, of a chair mounted to be projected through said opening to a position beneath the counter or to a position beyond the counter for use,

said chair including a seat and spaced para position back of the counter for control-- ling the movements of said chair.
