Be it known that I, JOHN A. DoBnE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city and county of San F raficisco, State of California, have invented a certain new and useful Electrically-Driven Fuel- Burner System, of which the following is a specification.
he invention relates to electrically driven liquid fuel burner systems and particularly to such systems when used in connection with steam boilers and steam engines.
An object of the invention is to provide means for varying the speed of the burner in proportion to the speed of the engine.
Another object of the invention is to provide a fuel combustion system for steam driven automobiles in whlch the speed of the burner is increased when the speed of the automobile reaches a predetermined rate.
The invention possesses other advantage- I ous features, some of which with the for going, will be set forth at length in the ollowing description where I shall outline in full, that form of the invention which I have selected for illustration in the drawings accompanying and forming part of the present specification. In said drawings I ave shown one form of my invention, but it is to be understood that I do notlimit myself to such form, since the invention, as expressed in the claims, may be embodied in a plurality of forms.

Figure 1 is a diagrammatic representation of the system of my invention.
Fig. 2 is an outline of an automobile chassis, showing the system of my invention in its environments.
The system of my invention is applicable to liquid fuel burners having an electric motor associated therewith either for vaporizing the fuel or for introducing the necessary air for combustion or for both purposes. The system is also applicable to burners of this type which are employed in combination with steam steam is derived for operating a prime mover and particularly to steam propelled automobiles, in which the load on the engine and consequently on the boiler, is being varied within wide limits. which produces a substantially constant motor speed regardless of the load on the boiler. It is one of the objects of this invention to provide means whereby the speed of the burner motor is increased, to increase the fire produced therein, when the speed of the engine" reaches a certain value, and to decrease the speed of the burner motor when the speed of the engine is decreased. By this system, the amount of heat introduced into the boiler varies roughly with the load on the boiler, since the load on the boiler varies roughly with the speed of the engine. Means may be provided for opening and closing the motoncircuit in accordance with pressure and temperature conditions obtained within the boiler, as shown in my copending application Serial No. 189,617, but since these means form no part of the present invention they will not be described herein. These or similar means are desirable however tomaintain proper conditions, within the boiler.
In the present construction I have ema burner including a rotatable cup 3 and blower 4 mounted on the shaft 5 of the motor 6. Fuel is fed into the cup through the conduit 7, in which is arranged a pump 8, driven from the shaft 5, so that the amount of fuel fed to the'b'urner varies with the speed ofthe motor. The liquid fuel, gasolene, kerosene, distillate or other liquid hydrocarbon, is sprayed by the rotating cup, thespray is mixed with the air from the blower and the mixture is ignited. The burner blows a flame into the steam boiler 8 and steam is conducted from the boiler through the pipe 12 to the steam engine or prime mover 1 3 which may be connected to any desirable driven element. In

Arranged in the motor circuit is a storage battery 15, preferably a battery having high internal resistance such as an alkali battery or Edison battery. In Fig. 1 I have indicated a battery having eight cells which will have a normal discharge voltage of about 9.6 volts. On account of the high internal rea charging voltage of about 15.4 volts is required. I connect the charging generator 16 to the steam engine or as in the present instance to the driving axle 14 of the automobile and when the speed of the engine is such that the voltage generated engine is in operation and drawing steam from the boiler, the generator voltage is impressed on the motor, causing it to rotate at a higher speed and consequently supplyin a greater amount of heat to the boiler. l3y this system, a two speed motor is obtained and the speed of the motor varies with the speed of the engine.
I claim:
1. The combination with a steam engine, a boiler for supplying steam to said engine, a burner associated with said boiler and an electric motor associated with said burner, of a circuit for said motor, a storage battery in the motor circuit, an electric generator driven by said engine, a circuit connecting the generator and'storage battery, a normally open switch in the generator circuit and means operative by an increase in the generated voltage to a predetermined magnitude to close said switch.
2. The combination with a steam engine, a boiler for supplying steam to said engine, a burner associated with said boiler and an electric motor associated with said burner, of a circuit for said motor, a high internal resistance storage battery in the motor circuit and an electric generator driven by said engine and connected across said storage battery.
3. The combination with a steam engine, a boiler for supplying steam to said engine, a burner associated with said boiler and an electric motor associated with said burner, of a circuit for said motor, a storage'battery having a discharge voltage low in comparison to its charging voltage connected in the motor circuit and an electric generator for charging said storage battery connected across said battery and driven by said engine.
4. The combination with a steam engine, a boiler for supplying steam to said engine, a liquid fuel burner associated with said boiler, an electric motor associated with said burner and a liquid fuel pump for supplying fuel to said burner connected to said motor,
of a circuit for said motor, a high internal resistance storage battery in the motor circuit and an electric generator for charging said battery connected across said battery and driven by the steam engine.
5. The combination with a steam engine, of a boiler for supplying steam to said engine, a liquid fuel burner associated with said boiler and means operative during an increase in speed of said engine above a predetermined speed for increasing the supply of liql iid fuel to said burner.
6. he combination with a steam engine, of a boiler for supplying steam to said engine, a liquid fuel burner associated with said boiler, an electric motor associated with said burner, a storage battery in circuit with said motor, "an electric generator driven by said engine and connected to said battery by a normally open circuit and means operative by an increase in the generated voltage to a predetermined value for closing said circuit.
7. The combination with a steam engine, of a boiler for supplying steam to said engine, a liquid fuel burner associated with said boiler, an electric motor associated with said burner, a fuel pump for supplying fuel to the burner connected to said motor, and means operative during an increase in speed of the engine to a redetermined value to increase the speed 0 the motor.
