LAMP-POST.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 16, 1920.
Application filed April 2, 1919, Serial No. 286,863. Renewed July 27, 1920. Serial No. 399,442.
To all wlw/m z' may concern.'
Be it known that I, Brione DI BnNnDi'ir-ro, a subject of the King or' Italy, residing at Springfield, in the county of 1Windsor and State 01" Vermont, have invented certain new and useiiul improvements in Lamp- Posts, ci which tl e following is a specification. l
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a lamp serviceable at any elevated point such as a newell post, balcony orV the like designed for employing either electricity or oil for supplyingv the light,l the structure having an ornamental external appearance, arrangements being inane for the aroper care of the illuminating member.
A -turth r object of the invention is to provide an elevatedholder for an interchangeable lighting member such as an oil and an electric lamp whereby either of the saine may be employed suitable to the requireinents oi the surrounding conditions, tne lamp being accessible when required and the exterior of the invention being normally iiiiished and attractive.
lilith these general objects in view the in- DI tinted in the accompanying drawings and in which like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the sevview.
ALn the drawings,
Figure 1 is a front elevation of tion employing an oil lamp -for ing purposes F ig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view thereof,
F ig. 3 is a view partially in side elevation and partly in vertical section showing the invention provided with an electric lighting means,
Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the same with the ornamental cap removed,
Fig. 5 is a similar view of a central portion thereof with the electric lamp and its helder removed and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the electric lamp holder.
My invention broadly consists of a sheet metal post 10 provided with an ornamental cap 11 preferably in the form of the bust of an individual, such as Shakespeare, as herein illustrated, provision being made for mounting an illuminating body within the the invenilluminatcap 11 for shedding rays of light through eye-openings 12 and through a central top opening 13 oi the cap or bust 11, the latter being preferably formed of frosted glass.
The bust 11, has a truste-conical base 14 seated 'within a positioning rim 15 margin-- ally provided upon the top -16 of the post 10, it being noted that the top 16 is atlthe upper end oi the tapered upper portion 17 of the said post.
A central opening 18 is provided through the top 16 for receiving the oil container' 19 of fluid oil burner or lamp 20. rl`he lamp 2O has the usual form of controlling member21 while its transparent chimney 22 vertically extends and terminates at the said top opening 13.
lt will be understood that the bust 11 may be readily removed from the top 16 when the lamp is positioned thereon s'o that the lamp 2O is then accessible for refilling, reg! uint-ing and any other care which may be required, the bust being returned and normally seated within the rim 15 as illustrated. The capv 11 may represent an animal, such as lion it' desired or any individual.
l/Vheirit is desired to employ electricity for lighting purposes` the usual i'orm of elec-- tric lamp 22 is provided with its socket seated within an upstanding flange 2.4. oic an accommodator or ring 25 and upon an inwardly projecting flange 26. The ring 25 is seated upon the top 16 of the post 10 with a depending flange 27 of the ring extending through the opening 18 of said top.
The lamp 23 being mounted upright in the ring 25 and the ring positioned upon the top 16 as described, the circuit wires 28 extend downwardly through the post 10 and outwardly through a perioiation 29 in the post to a suitable source of electrical supply. The lamp socket 23 being of the pull style, has. an operating chain 30 by means of which the electric light is turned on and off as desired, the said chain extending downwardly in the post and through a side opening 31 therein to a point that is readily accessible eXteriorly @i the post tor controlling the lamp 22 as found desirable. A side notch 32 is provided in the top 16 of the post communicating with the central opening 18 thereof, with which notch, a side notch 33 of the ring 25 is adapted to register for receiving the pull chain' 30 therethrough.
The bust 11 may be formed oit' metal so that the entire structure is hre-prooi and the light Within the said bust throws a glow in the form ot indirect lighting in the immediate vicinity of the post 10. The bust aSo be torined oi semrtransparent material, such as porcelain or colored glass instead of metal if desired.
My invention is especially serviceable as a night light, Where itis unnecessary to clearly discern surrounding objects but a continuing` the full capacity of the lain@ may be easily obtained by removing` the cap or bust il.
l. A.V device ot the class describedL coinprising,` a tubular nietaliie pos., having` a tapered upper portion, a top the post having an annular riin and further having a central opening,` provided with a side notch, an accommodating ring` having a side notch corresponding with the notch oi said top when the device is assembled, a dOWllWal'Ciiy projecting` flange surrounding the central opening,` of the rino,` deoending through the opening of the top, an upwardly projecting and an inwardly projectingl flange upon the ring adapted for seating a lamp socket therein and a cap in the orin of a bust removably positioned upon the top and Within said rim provided With a provided for a side notch corresponding with the notch of said top when the device is assembled, a downwardly projecting flange surroundingl J011e central opening ot the ringdepending through the openingoi the top, an upwardly projecting and an inwardly projecting flange upon the ring adapted for seatingJ a. lanip socket therein, the said post having perform tions through the side thereor", an electric lamp socket seated upright in said ring, circuit Wires and a pull chain for th^ latter extending` through said perror-ations out Wardly of the post and @frosted giass cap having a truste-conical base seated upon the top of the post Within said riin for su rounding the lamp and hai/'ing eye-perforations and a top opening adapted tor the projection oiilight troni the lainp therethrough when the device is assembled.
In testimony whereof l aflix inv signature.
