Description

C. W. G. SODEMANN.
TOP FOR RADIATOR SHIELDS.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 8, 1919.
1,358,995, Patented Nov. 16, 1920.
PATENT OFFICE.
UNITED STATES CHRISTIAN W. G. SODEMANN, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
TOR FOR RADIATOR-SHIELDS.
Original applicati;
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented N0". 16, 1920. september 17, 1918, Serial No. 254,448. Divided and this application filed March 8, 1919. Serial No. 281,404.
To all w homit may concern.
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN V. G. Somnnaxx, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tops for Radiator Shields, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
NIy invention relates to improvements in tops for radiator shields and has for its object to provide a reversible top so constructed as to accommodate a plain metallic topplate when in one position, and, when re versed, an opaque slab of non-metallic material or a transparent slab with an underlying ornamental fabric.
The dealer in radiator shields is enabled to stock for a wide range of demands for plain or ornamental tops, with a minimum of investment and a minimum of warehouse space, when purchasing, the tops of my invention, as each top may be sold for use as a plain, undecorated shield-to1'), or may be sold for use with an' opaque slab in place, such as slate, or with a transparent slab of glass beneath which is secured any decorative fabric desired, such as tapestry, wallpaper, lace or embroidery, which decorative fabric may be of any material or design intended to harmonize with the decorations and furnishings of the hall, room or other location wherein the radiator is mounted. The characteristics of the top are intended also to economize, as to weight and space, in storage, packing and shipping.
This application is a division of application #254,448, filed Sept. 17, 1918.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective'view of the top embodying my invention, in place upona radiator shield, and displaying an ornamental design.
Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view of the same.
F ig. 3 is a fragmental sectional view of the same, when used as a plain top.
I employ a reversible or two-faced frame 4, divided by the inwardly projecting flange 11 into one shallow and one deeper portion,
the shallow portion when uppermost as shown in Fig. 3 being of a-depth to exactly receive the metallic plate 8; when reversed (as in Figs. 1 and 2) the frame 4 is of a depth to receive and hold the same metallic plate 8, a sheet of decorative fabric 10, and a sheet of glass 9, so that the upper surface of the glass 9 will be flush with the upper face of the frame 4.
This structure is arranged to be secured to the top of aradiator shield composed of end-brackets 5 and a. back-and-top sheet 12. The brackets 5 have inwardly-projecting ledges '7, perforated to receive bolts 6, which extend through the sheet 12 and the plate 8 (see Fig. 3).
Ashereinabove indicated, the slab 9 may be opaque, in which case the fabric 10 is dis pensed with.
By the described arrangement of parts a wide latitude of decorative effects is made possible when the frame is used as a deep frame (as in Fig. 2) while the transverse, or shallow. position of the frame (Fig. 3) is used when a plain metallic top or shelf is desired. 1
By reason of these characteristics a permanent salvage value is provided, a plain shield (Fig. 3) used in offices, stores, warehouses or like locations being convertible to residential or other decorative uses without the addition of any metallic parts, and by simply reversing the frame 4, transposing the metal plate 8 to the upper side of the flange 7, and adding the decorative fabric 10 and transparent slab 9.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to have secured to me by the grant of Letters Patent, is
A top for radiator shields comprising a two-faced frame, an inwardly projecting flange within said frame and nearer one face of the frame than to the other; a metallic plate conformed to fill the shallow side of said frame; and a slab conformed to fill the deeper side of said frame when mounted therein and above said metallic plate.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
CHRISTIAN W. G. SODEMANN.
