HAND-LAMP.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrrr C. FORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Madison, in the county of Dane and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hand-Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates particularly to elect-ric hand-lamps; and the primary object is to provide an improved lamp of this character which is inexpensive, and in which provision is made, in a very simple manner, for preventing accidental sh0rt-circuiting of the device.
The invention is illustrated, in itspreferred embodiment, in the accompanying drawing, which represents a longitudinal sectional view, the batteries employed being shown inelevation, however.
In the construction illustrated, A repre sents a tubular casing which may be of convenient size to be carried readily in the hand, or, if desired, in the pocket; B, a battery, here shown as comprising two dry cells B and B fTC, a metallic reflector insulatingly mounted in one end of the casing; .C, a lens surmounting said reflector; D, an incandescent lamp mounted in the reflector; and E, a contact-controlling.device mounted on one side of thecasing near the front end thereof, and serving to control the position of a contact member E which isadapted to make contact with the metallic reflector C, and which preferably is formed integrally with a resilient copper strip E which leads to the base end of the casing.
The casing A comprises a tubular body of insulating material, such as fiber, which is equipped at its base end with a threaded sleeve, or ferrule, 1, upon which is screwed a metal cap 2, which supports a conical metal spring 3; and a threaded metal sleeve, or ferrule, 4, which is secured on the front end of the tubular member A and has screwed thereon a retainer sleeve, or ring, 5 which serves to clamp the reflector and lens in position.
As indicated, the reflector is of metal. It
is provided with a socket 6 for the lamp D.
The cell B of the battery has the naked bottom of its zinc casing resting on and forming contact with the spring 3, and thus is. in electrical connection with the base end Specification of Letters Patent.

extremity of the conductor E which is in permanent contact with the metallic sleeve 1. The cells are provided with central con tacts 7. The naked zinc bottom of the upper cell bears against the central contact of the lower cell. The central contact of the lamp bears against the central contact of the adj acent cell, and the metallic shell of the socket-portion of the lamp is, of course, in contact with the metallic reflector C, which supports the lamp. Thus, the circuit of the device will be closed when the contact member E is moved into contact with the reflector.
The circuit is controlled by the device E. This comprises a guard 8 which is provided with a slot in which is mounted a sliding button 9 equipped with a resilient shoe 10. The member 10 has an inclined portion l0 adapted to work against a shoulder 11 at the upper end of a slotll in the casing A. The cam-portion 10 is provided with a slot which engages a cam-portion 12 of the contact member E. The arrangement is such that when the button 9 is shoved forwardly,
the cam-portion 10 will engage the shouldition when set in the forward position, and
will maintain the circuit in open condition when placed in the retracted position shown in the drawing.
Inasmuch as the reflector is insulated from the metallic sleeves 4 and 5, it is evident that the device cannot be short-circuited by laying the hand-lamp on a metallic surface.
The guard 8 is shown secured at its forward end to the casing A and the sleeve 4 by a rivet 13. At its rear'end a guard is secured to the casing and to'j the resilient conductor E by a rivet 13. Biyig'virtue of the arrangement shown, a single conductor, in the form of a resilientstrip of copper,
for instance, may serve as a contact membe'r and as a conductor affording a continuous lead from the reflector to the base end of the hand-lamp.
The construction described is exceedingly simple, inexpensive, and thoroughly adapted to its purpose.
The foregoing detailed description has been given for clearness of understanding, and no unnecessary limitation should be understood therefrom, but the appended claims should be construed as broadly as permissible, in View of the prior art.
What I regard as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: y
1. In a hand-lamp, the combination of an insulating casing, a closure for the base end thereof, a battery in said casing, an integral internal conductor in electrical connection with the base end of the battery and leading to the forward end of the casing where it is equipped with a contact member, a metallic reflector insulatingly mounted in the frontend of the casing opposite said base end, said contact-member being adapted to contact with said'reflector, a lamp mounted in said reflector and having central contact with the battery, a lens surmounting said messes reflector, a sleeve securing said lens in position, and a sliding camdevice mounted onthe casing near its forward end andadapted to actuate said contact member of said conductor, whereby the circuit may be established, or broken, at will.
2. In a hand-lamp, the combination of an insulating casing, a closure for the base end thereof, a battery in said casing, a resilient metal strip having electric connection with the base end of the battery and serving as an internal conductor leading to the forward end of the casing, where it is provided with a contact member having a cam-portion, a slide mounted on the forward end of the casing and engaging the cam-portion of said contact member, a metallic reflector insulatingly mounted in the forward end of the casing, said contact-member being adapted to make contact with said reflector, a lamp mounted in saidreflector and having central contact with the battery, a lens surmounting said reflector and disposed adjacent to said contact member, and a sleeve securing said reflector and lens in position.
