I. TEN BRINK.
TRUCK STARTING |MPLEMENT.
APPLICATION FILED APR. I3, I920. I l,358,347 Patented Nov. 9, 1920.
atteind/1J .UNITED STATES llA'IliNT GFFTQ."
JOHONNAS TEN BBINK, F HOLLAND, MICHIGAN.
TRUCK-STARTING nurLni/rnnr.
Application filed April 13,
To all whom @it may concern.'
Be it known that I, JoI-IoNNAs TEN BRINK, a citizen of the United States, residinov at Holland, in the county of Ottawa and @ate of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Truck-Starting Iniplemcnts, of which the following is a speciiication.
My invention relates to improvements in starting devices for fire department trucks, and kindred vehicles, and its objects are: rst, to provide a means whereby the weight of the truck will be relieved upon the tires, and, second, to provide a means whereby the movement of the clutch lever will provide a means for movingthe truck forwardly be fore the power has been applied from the motor, and thus the strain upon the motor parts may be greatly lessened.
I attain these objects by the mechanism shown in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation, Fig. 2 is a back elevation, and Fig. 3 is a front elevation of my device, Fig. l is alongitudinal section of the lower parts of a truck with my device in place. Fig. 5 is a plan of the supporting cap of my device showing the manner of attaching the same, and Fig. 6 is a bottom plan of the shoe showing serrations to prevent slipping.
Similar reference characters indicate similar parts throughout the accompanying drawings.
This implement consists of a supporting frame 1 with an extensible screw end 8 thereon, said end having a cap 9 thereon arranged to engage the lower side of the axletree to raise and support the same. I have shown a lever passed through the hole 7L for operating the screw 8, but other means may be used as desired. The supporting frame or standard 1 has a broad foot 14 made integral therewith, said foot being curved practically upon the radius indicated at B so that as it tips over it will be inclined to roll upon the foot. It is better to have the lower surface of the foot ser rated, as indicated in Fig. 6 so it will not slip when forcing the truck forward, as hereinafter described.
To complete the device I pivot a long brace, 2, to the standard 1 at a, and to short braces 3 at b, the lower ends of the short braces being connected with the standard 1 by means of a cross brace 4l pivotally connected at c and ,7, the continuous brace 2-3 Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 9, 1920. 1920. seriai No. 373,605.
being held in alinement, when in use, by the short cross brace 5, pivoted to the brace 2 at CZ, and to the trip 6 at d', the trip being pivoted to the standard, through the projection 11, at c, and has a cable 7 connected with it at f. The pivotal point d is slightly lower than a direct line, ca between the I pivots (Z and c so that normally the brace and the trip 6 will hold the brace 23 rigidly in place, but if the cable 7 is drawn upwardly to I) the end f of the trip 6 will be raised suiiiciently to carry the pivotal joint d above the line .r-m and draw the braces inwardly, as indicated at A, breaking the support of the braces 2-3 and allowing the standard to fall forwardly, as indicated at A', the braces and'trip folding against the standard, as indicated at@ It is under stood that when in use the standard holds the wheels 19 some distance from the suppor-ting element, as a floor, so that when the trip is sprung and the standard falls forward the entire truck is carried forward, as indicated by the dotted lines of the wheel 19, giving it a forward impetus independently of the truck driving motor, not here shown. Y
I prefer'that the base 13 be made broad, and that the shoe 14 be reinforced by web braces 12 to insure perfect rigidity "of construction.
To operate this device a lever 16 is pivotally mounted upon the truck frame with the lower end, rf, in position to receive a loop on the end of the cable 7, the upper'end of said lever being connected with some corresponding lever, as 18, by a cable or rod 17. 18 may be the clutch lever, if desired., or any other available mechanism, so that its forward movement will cause the lever 16 to pull upwardly upon the cable 7 and actuate the trip 6, as, and with the effect here inbefore described. The forward movement of the truck will cause the arm i of the lever 16 to become disengaged from the cable, thus averting the danger of dragging the device with the truck.
10 is a slot through the standard 1 for the passage of the trip 6 and the cable 7.
It will be understood that, if desired, the standard 1 may be made to use without the screw 8, and the truck elevated into position to apply the starter by means of an ordinary jaclc, or a lever, and the starter placed in position, but I greatly prefer the construction herein shown as 'it converts the implethan it' other implements were necessary to make it available for the purpose for which it is designed. v
The'free end ci the trip G should overlap the braces 5 suiciently so the connected ends of the two cannot drop below the position shown in Fig. 1 and thus render it iinpossible tor the braces 2-3 to told or break until the trip is drawn upwardly sufficiently to carry the braces 2-3 out Vot alinement. The cap 9 is made revolubly adjustable upon the bolt 8, as indicated in Fig. 5..
that I claim as new in the art, is: y
1. In a starting device for trucks, a standardyan adjustable cap thereon, a long bracepivotally connected with the standard near its upper end, a short brace pivotally connected with the lower end ot' the long brace, a cross brace pivotally connected with the lower end of the short brace and with the standard, a trip pivotally connected withthe standard, a short cross brace -pivotally connected withthe long brace and with the trip, and means or actuating thetrip to cause the braces .to collapse and the starter to incline overl and start the truck moving forwardlyn 2. Yln a starting device Vfor trucks, a standard, a screw threaded bolt mounted in the upper end of :the standard,y a revolubly ad-V justable cap on said belt, means tor revolving said bolt to raise and lower theV cap, collapsible braces pivotally connected with the standard to support the standard rigidly, a trip connected with the braces, a trip lever connected with the truck'frame, and means for actuating the trip from the trip lever VLarissa? causing the braces to collapse and the standard to fall over and force the truck vforwardly. 1 v
3. ln a starting device for trucks, a standard, collapsible braces pivotally connected with one side of the standard, a trip pivotally connected with'said braces and with the standard, a screw threaded bolt mounted in the upper end of the standard, means forV lower end of the standard and curved conveXly on its lower surface, Yserrations Vformed on said surface to prevent slipping,
a trip pivotally connected with the trame and with 4the braces, an actuating lever pivyotally mounted on the truckirame, a cable connecting one end of said lever with the ree end o1 the trip, and a cable connecting the actuating lever with the clutch lever of the truck in such a .manner that ythe forward movement of the clutch lever will cause the braces :to collapse and starting device to roll forwardly upon its shoe and move the truck forwardly.
