To all w lawn in may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN WV. Herr, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Flagstaff, in the county of Coconino and State of Arizona, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lar-Stakes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to car stakes and more particularly to that type of stake that is used on logging car bunks.
One of the objects of my invention is the provision of an improvcc car stake as above specified of the rotating type.
Another object of my invention is to pro- 'vide a stake which has associated therewith a combination of parts that retain the stake in a positive locked position while bearing a load and that will surely and effectively release the stake from that position when so desired.
A still further object of my invention is the production of a device of the kind above described. that after release of the load can be returned to a load hearing or locked position with th minimum effort in the minimum time.
With these and other objects in view, my invention consists of features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings 7 Figure 1 is a front elevation showing the stake in a load bearing position;

Referring more particularly to the drawings wherein like characters represent like parts in all views, 10 designates a bolster which carries the transverse bunks, in this instance parallel rail sections 11 and 11 secured by any suitable means. As clearly shown these rails extend beyond the end of the bolster 10 and in that extending portion of the rails is carried a pin 12 which in turn has pivotally mounted thereon the stake 13. The lower end of the stake 18 is bifurcated to provide spaced legs 14L in each of which is formed an elongatedopening 15 that receives the pin 12 to pivotally connect the stake to the rails 11 and 11.-

Astrap 17 is secured to one face of the bolster-1O and pivotally carries the locking ar 18, the said bar extending across the end face of the bolster and the free end thereof projecting beyond the opposite side of the bolster from that on which the strap 17 is positioned. To insure the pivotal connection of the bar 18 Wlill the strap 17 a head 19is formed on the outer end of the strap. The downward movement of the bar 1.8 is limlted by itsengagement with the bracket 20 which is mounted on the end face of bolster. its is clearly shown in Figs- 1 and 3 the lock bar 18, when in a raised position, is adapted to engage the legs 1 1 of the stake to prevent the same from swing ing outwardly, th inward movement of the stake being limited by its engagement with the enlargement 21 on the strip 22 that is carried by the rail 11.
l have provided a very simple and ellicient means for releasably retaining the lock bar in a raised position and thus hold the stake in a load bearing position. The de scription of this means will now ensue. A trip lock block 23 is pivoted to the bolster, the same comprising a body 24 having a grip 25 extending from one side thereof and arm 24% projecting from the opposite side.
The trip block is so pivoted to the bolster as to fall by gravity to the position as shown in Fi 2. 'To retain the trip lock block 23 in engagement with the lock bar 18 a rectangular locking block 27 is pivoted to the bolster adjacent the trip block 23 and capable of engaging the arm 26 of the trip block when the latter is holding the bar 18 in a raised position in engagement with the stake. Because the lock block 27-is pivoted off center it, whenallowed movement, seeks to attain a horizontal position with the greater mass thereof below the point of pivot. By so doing the lock block 27 is always urged by gravity against the trip block 23 or the arm 26 thereof. It will be noted that when the parts are in a position as shown in Fig. 2 and the stake has been allowed to swing outwardly from a vertical position the same drops down on the pin 12 the length of the elongated opening in each leg 14 of the stake so that no part of the stake will project above the rails 11.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, it Will be seen that my invention provides a car stake and locking means therefor which is simple in construction and designed to carry out the objects of the invention in a reliable and eiiicient manner. It will, of course, be understood that while the construction disclosed is the preferred embodiment of my invention, changes may be'made within the scope of the appended claim without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What I claim is:
The combination with a support, a stake pivotally carried thereby, a movable lock bar adapted to engage said stake, a pivoted trip block comprising a body having a grip extending from one side edge thereof and adapted to engage beneath and support the look bar, said trip block having an arm projecting from the opposite side edge, and a pivoted lock block adapted to engage said opposite side of said body of the trip lock block and said arm to retain said trip lock block in a vertical position in engagement with said lock bar.
