Be it known that I, Vroron E. ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Maywood, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothesline-l lold ers, of whichthe following. is a specification.

This invention relates to clothes line holders and more particularly to an improved device for. engaging and retaining the ends of a clothes line in a fixed position on the support to which the device is attached.

The primary object of the invention is to provide a holder of this character which will engage the end of the clothes line and maintain it in position without the necessity of forming knots, or tying the clothes line in any manner.

The further object of the invention is the production of a device of this character which consists of comparatively few parts and is simple in construction, but durable and well adapted to withstand the rough usage to which devices of this character are ordinarily subjected.

For a full description of the invention and the advantages and merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a front elevation of thedevice constructed in accordance with my invention.

Referring to the drawings, wherein is illus trated the preferred form of my invention, in which like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, the base plate 1 is provided with a plurality of openings 2 which may receive fastening whereby the base plate may be securely and rigidly fastened to a supporting line is to extend. The base plate 1 is provided with a centrally located outwardly extended arm or lug 3 which is formed at its free end with a substantially circular portion 4 having a central opening through which a pivot pin 5 is extended. Tangentially projecting from the circular portion 4 is a finger 7 having one surface provided with teeth and it will be noted that this tangentially projecting Specification of Letters Patent. portionis directed downwardly at an angle. This locking finger 7 cooperates with the complementary locking member to maintain the clothes linein position as will presently appear.

Asv shown in detail in Fig. 4, the movable locking member comprises the plate 8- having an opening. 9 to receive the pivot member 5" whereby the plate may be pivotallymounted on the supporting member. The lower end of the plate is provided with a laterally proecting portion 10 which has its surface corrugated as indicated at 11. The surface 11 is adapted to cofjperate with face of the member 7 as shown to advantage in Fig. 2 whereby the clothes line may be firmly fixed in position between the two corrugated faces. The outer end of the portion 10 is provided with a disk 12 whereby displacement of the clothes line from the space between the flange and the plate 8 is prevented.

The upper end of the plate is provided with a substantially U-shaped guide member 13 which includes the parallel arms 14 and the connecting curved portions 15, the open space between the arms being adapted to receive the clothes line.

Assuming that the device is mounted upon a supporting post and the end of the line is to be secured tightly in position, the member 8 will be swung on its pivot so that the locking aws formed by the members 7 and 10 will be opened. The clothes line will then be passed through the space between the looking jaws and upwardly through the space between the parallel arms 14. The clothes line will then be pulled in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 2 and it will be obvious that this pulling on the clothes line will exert a pull on the U-shaped member 13 which will cause the plate member to swing on its pivot 5 and force the corrugated surface 11 toward the corrugations on the member 7 whereby the clothes line disposed be tween the corrugated surfaces will be firml and rigidly held in position, and the tighter the pull on the clothes line, the firmer the clothes line will be held in position. It will be obvious that it is unnecessary to tie knots or employ any auxiliary fastening means in connection with the device as the clothes line will be firmly and rigidly held in position while weight is supported by it. To release the lineit is merely necessary to re the corrugated lease the pull on the line and swing the jaws to open position whereupon the linecmay be readily extracted,

The foregoing description andaccompanying drawings have reference to what might be considered to be the approved or preferred form of my invention. I desire it to be understood that I may make such changes in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, materials, dimensions, et cetera, as may prove expedient and fall within the scope of the appended claim.

Having thus fully described my invention 'what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

As a new article of manufacture, a clothes line holder comprising a base plate, sleeves formed on said base plate seas to have their rear portions open, a stem adapted to fit snugly in said sleeves and formed with a flattened portion for bearing against a support, a supporting arm extending integrally from the stem, a locking member depending from said supporting arm and having its outer face of its lower end corrugated, a plate pivotallv mounted upon the end of said supporting arm, a lateral corrugated extension situated upon the lower end'of the plate, a disk integrally provided on said exextension, and a U-shaped yoke circular in cross section and having one leg integral with the top of said plate and extending laterally therefrom so as to be disposed above said extension. i 1 i' In testimony hereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
