Specification of Letters Patent.
*nplieation filed March 20, 1919. Serial No. 283,?38.
5& H wimm it may concern:
it known that I, Josnrn RUssnLL F 1n;- a subject of the King of Great Britain, and resident of Ham ton, inthe Provim-e of New Brunswick, Dominion of Can- :ula, have invented certain new and useful lu'iprovements in Batteries, of which the. following is a specification.
'lhisinvention relates to improvements in batteries, and the objects of the inventioir are to so construct the battery in such a manner'that it will not deteriorate or become eflfected to any visible extent by overcharging and which will also give good results on discharge, to eliminate the use of wooden separators between the positive and i'iegative, elements to dispense with the use cl? thin plates thereby preventing watering and short circuiting dueto the separators chafing through or breaking up, and generall y to adapt the battery to better perform the functions required of it.
-With the above and other objects in View the invention consists essentially of the improved construction hereinafter set forth and described in the followingspecification and accompanying drawings forming part of -the same.
in the drawings,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved battery, part of the jar being broken a way to show the position of the separating walls, and also the location of the positive and negative elements provided with a filling; of lead oxid. I
' 2 is a sectional cl battery.
plan view of the inn bat-ti.
tis a perspective View of the positive and negative elements showing the manner m which the plates of one element are constructed relatively to the plates of the otner elements.
Like characters of reference refer'to like parts in the several figures. 1
Referring to the drawings, A represents a l'iattery of the wet type comprising a jar l0 formed of'earthenware or other suitable 3 is a vertical section of the improved elements 3 and o are constructed relatively to each other. that is to say that when the two elements are positioned in the l0,
the elements will be arranged consecutively negative and positive, each plate being in a sep a-into compartment 12 i'he compartments are filled with a mixture of sulfuric acid and water of a'predetermined gravity and the may then be inclosed in a rubber or other suitable with the posts of the positive and. negative elements 13 and G extending; through the cover o1 the rubber jar.
I have found that wet battery of this construction gives exceptionally good results in practice, and the earthenware walls 11, while being; very porous do not deteriorate to any visible extent even when over charging and there is no possi division walls chafing through and re in short circuiting and the lifetime or battery is mucn greater than the ordinary wet batteries at present in As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments oi my invention, within the scope of the claim constructed without departing from the spirit or scope thereof it is intended that all matter contained in the above specification and accompanying; drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
ii hat I claim as my invention A wet battery of the class described, comprising a jar subdivided into a plurality of compartments by porous earthenware walls, positive and negative element-s each core- ;lnft eirlneiil Nov. 2, limit. I
