IMPROVEMENT IN APPARATUS FOR XTINGUISHING FIRES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,772, dated February 1l, i873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR F. BURTON, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Apparatus for Extinguishing Fires; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawin g forming part of this specification, in which drawing- Figure l represents a perspective view of my apparatus as applied to two buildings on opposite sides of a street. Fig. 2 is a sectional View of one` of the water-supply pipes with its jacket.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to an apparatus'for extinguishing fires, which is composed essentially of bridges connecting bui-ldings on opposite sides of streets, and of water-pipes which extendvup from the water-pipes in the streets, and are provided with nozzles above and below, and with jackets which prevent the water in said pipes from freezing, and which also assist in supporting the bridge, the lower nozzles being so situated that they can be readily connected to a fire-engine, while the bridges give convenient access to the npper nozzles, so that a hose can be connected to them, and that currents of water can be .thrown on any portion of the adjacent buildings.
In the drawing, the letters A A designate two buildings on opposite sides of a street. These buildings are connected by a bridge, B,
the ends of which rest upon the edges of the roofs or cornices of said buildings, as shown. From the street rise pipes C O, the upper ends of which extend up on either side of the bridge, and are provided with nozzles a a, while their lower ends connect with the water-pipes in the street, as indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawing. On the lower parts of said pipes are provided nozzles b b in such a position that they can be readily connected to a fire-engine, while the upper nozzles a a are so situated that they can be connected to a hose kept for that purpose on a small twowheel hand hose-carriage on the top of buildings,
conveniently distributed, and serving as realarm stations. The connecting-bridges are so arranged that said hosecarriage can be readily carried over them to the place in the neighborhood of which a lire may occur, and from which the lire can be reached. The waterA pipes C C are inclosed in jackets D D, which are filled with sawdust or other suitable material, so that, in case my apparatus is to be used in cold weather, the water in the pipes C C is prevented from freezing. Said jackets are, by preference, made in the shape of hollow columns, which assist in supporting the bridge B.
If the pressure in the watenmain is suicient to carry the waterup to the highest part of a building the lower nozzles b b may be closed; but, in case the force of the water is not sucient, a lreengine is connected to said nozzles, and by this ireengine the water is forced up to the upper nozzles a a; and if a hose is secured to one or both of said nozzles streams of water can be readily thrown into or ou the building in which the re occurs.
It is obvious that my connecting-bridges must be judiciously located, so that access can be had to the roofs of five and six story buildings, and from those water can be thrown over the Mansard roofs of any adjoining building.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination of bridges B B, connecting the roofs of buildings, with water-pipes C O extending up from the street, and provided with upper nozzles a a and with lower nozzles b b, substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein shown and described.
2. In combination with the bridges B B and water-pipes C C, the jackets D D, inclosin-g the water-pipes and serving as additional supports for the bridges, substantially as set forth.
This specification signed by me this 21st day of November, 1872.
