To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, ll llarnnw B. MORGAN, a citizen of'thc United States, residing at Cleveland Heights, in the county of Guya- 5 hoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Track-Belts, of which the following is a full. clear and exact descri )tion. 4 a
r I I 9 This invention relates to endless track ing tractors. ,The objectof the invention is to produce a serviceable track belt at a minimum cost. The invention consists in a track belt consisting of units or links constructed, and connected together substantially as shown in the drawings and hereinafter described as pointed out definitely in the appended claims.
In the drawing, Figure 'l is a plan view of two connected links of a track belt which embodies the invention; Fig. 2 is, a side elevation of the same two track links; Fig. 3 is a front elevation of one of said links; Fig. 4: is a transverse vertical section in the plane of. line H on Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a plan view of the blank from which the top member of each link is formed; Fig. 6 is a side elevation of a link which embodies the invention but is slightly different in some 3Q respects from that shown in the preceding I at) to the front and rearends of the plates The figures; Fig. 7 is a front elevation ofthe link shown in Fig. 6.
Each of the links consists of two men! bers formed by cutting and bending sheet metal plates. These two members are a top member 10, and a foot 20.
Each top member, when completed, coinprises as integral parts two parallel side members 12 a transversely cylindrical front an member ll, and a transversely extended eye lindrical rear member 15. M
To produce this top member, a flat and substantially rectangular metal plate is employed. '(See Fig. 5.) The middle partof as this plate between them-two side members 12 is punched out, forming a central rectangular opening, but some [or the metal so punched out is left in the form of .two
for use as parts of track lay-v rnacit entr.

enough for all practical purposes. The rear tongue and the rear end of the plateto which the tongue is attached are then bent to form the large cylinder 15. This'cylinder is not complete, as shown, but itis complete enough for all practical purposes. The 'nietal of which it is formed is bent both below and above the plane in which "width of the top 'member.'
the side members 12 lie; and, in bending the metal to form this large cylinder, said metal is bent around the front cylinder of an adjacent link thereby hinging the links to gether. The small cylinder serves as the hinge pintle, and the large cylinder as the sleeve in which said 'pintle is rotatably The foot member 20 includes a bottom plate or shoe 21, having two turned'up sides 22. The width ofthe shoe of thisfoot of the top member, and therefore these sides extend upwardly at an inclination toward each other, while at their upper ends the distance between is substantially equal to the The extreme edges of these upturned sides are bent into horizontal position, thereby forming horizontalflanges 23 which go beneath and are secured preferably by welding to the sides of the top of the-top member.
The front end of the shoe or bottom plate of the front member is bent downwardly to form a round engaging transverse member is preferably greater than the width grouser 25. T his ispreferably in the form a of a loop, the extreme end 26 ofwhich passes beneath and'is welded or otherwise secured to the. lower face of the shoe 21.
When a'belt is made of members constructed as shown and described, andwhen these links are connected together in suf- 4 ficient hu'mberto form an endless" chain, this chain is admirably adapted for use as a. track belt upon a track layingtractor.
Theside members 12 of the successive links lie in the same plane, and there is only a small gap between their adjacent ends,-
tongues which remain'attached respectively front ton ueand the front end of the plate of the plate, and into'approrimately cylindrical {form to form the small frohteylin' These side 'meinbers therefore serve as the rails for the weight-supporting rollers or, wheels of the'tractor to ride on. The central opening in this plate permits the teeth of the sprocket wheels of the tractor to engagetheexternal surface of'the rear cyl ind e l5.
It will be understood that it is not necessary that the downturned front end of the shoe of each link shall be in loop form, as shown in Fig. 2. It may be simply a downturned flange as shown in Fig. (3, and this downturned flange may or may not be reinforced, as shown in Fig. 6. It will also be understood that it is not essential that the edges of the upturned side members ot' the front pass beneath the sides of the top members, as shown in Fig. 4:, although this is the preferable construction of these side members. They may have their upper edges engaging with the edge of the upper member, and these engaging edges may be beveled and welded together substantially as shown in Figs. (3 and 7.
Having described my invention. I claim 1. A track belt for track laying tractors comprising a plurality of pivotally connect-' end of the member, each of the smaller cyl-' inders being embraced by and rotatable within the larger cylinder of the next adjacent link. 7
parallel flat side bars and 2. A track belt for track laying tractors comprising a plurality of pivotally connected links, each of which comprises an open rectangular top member having two parallel flat side bars and cylindrical cross bars of different diameters extending between the side bars at the front and rear ends of said top member, and a foot member having upturned sides which engage with and aresecured tothe side bars of the top members, the small cylindrical cross bar of each link being embraced by and rotatable within the large cylindrical cross bar of the next adjacent link.
3, A tr-ack belt for track laying tractors, comprising a plurality of pivotally connected links, each of which comprises an open rectangular top member having two cylindrical cross bars of different diameters extending between the side barsat the front and rear ends of said top member, and a foot member having 11 )turned sides which alon their to t! upper edges are bent into horizontal position and are extended beneath and are secured to the side bars of the top member, the small cylindrical cross bar of each link being embraced by and rotatable within the large cylindrical cross bar of the next adjacent link.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto afiix my gnatu re.
MATHEW B. MORGAN.
