To all w hom t may concern Be it known that I, DAVID DUNDAS, Hunter Street, ldlhiteinch, Glasgow, Scotland, a subject of the King of Great Britain, have'invented certain new and useful Improvements .Relating to Shipsy Side Lights or Windows, of which the following is a specification,
This invention relates to ships side lights or windows and its object is to provide a simple gear whereby the window can be easily operated.
Under this invention ships side lights or windows areprovided with means for opening and closing same, said means being characterized by a lazy-tongs or like arrangement of levers capable of being oper* ated by screw or equivalent gear, means being also provided for balancing the weight of the window and thereby facilitating the opening and closing operations.

There is also provided in connection with the lazy-tongs arrangement of levers and the operating gear therefor, guides whereby the lazy-tongs motion is kept in a parallel line to the path of the window.
ln order that my said invention may be properly understood I have hereunto appended an explanatory sheet of drawings whereon, by way of illustration or example, one embodiment of the invention is shown.

Referring to the drawings In carrying out the invention the window sash a is slidably fitted within a frame andcan beA raised and lowered, as desired, by means of a 'lazy-tongs arrangement of levers c operable by means of a screw spindie d which, in turn, can be rotated by means of bevel gear c operable by a suitable handle or hand lever f. In order to balance the weight of the window a and thereby facilitate the raising operation one or more springs g are provided in connection with the lazy-tongs levers c.
As illustrated 4at Fig. l, the lazy-tongs arrangement of levers c, comprises two pairs of cross levers l, 2, jointed together at it, t', the upper ends of thetop pair l.

The lower end of the screwed spindletl works in a 'bea-ring o inthe base plate or bracket Z and its upper end has litted to it one of the bevel wheels of the bevel gear e, while the other wheel through a cover plate or guard Q fitted to or formingpart of the windowframe b. The end of the spindle p is squared or otherof the gear is vmounted on a spindle p which passes wise formed for the reception of the operating handle4 or lever f, which can be removed when not required. j
The springs g for facilitating the opening and closing operations are fitted at the joints r of the pairs of levers 1,2, a suitj able cup or socket or such like s being pr0 vided at each joint for the reception of the ends of the springs so as to retain same in the operative position. The springs g are so arranged, and their number is such as to balance the window a at any pre-determined position.
The number of pairs of levers c may be varied, as desired, in accordance with the `length of the window a, the amount of it enters the bearing 0 or' the bracket Z a cushion spring o or its equivalent may be provided. lt surrounds the spindle d while its lower end bears on the bracket Z its ob-v ject being to act as a stop :tor the window a when lowered to its full extent and to prevent the socket m being over-run. y
By rot-ating the bevel gear the spindle is rotated and the cross levers are moved to raise or lower the window on the well known lazy-tongs principle, the weightof the window being balanced in any position by suitable springs connected to the ends of the jointed levers, as described.

A ships side flight or sliding window having opening and closing means comprising a lazy-tongs arrangement of levers fitted in connection with the window sash, sockets carried by the lazy-tongs levers, a screw spindle engaging the sockets, bearings for the spindle, gearing 'for rotating the spindle in its bearings, springs in connection with the lazy-tongs levers for balancing the weight of the window, and a handle 'for operating the gearing.

A ships side light consisting or a window iframe with a resilient lining, a window slidable within the frame and means whereby the window can be Jforced tightly against said. resilient lining, in combination with means tor opening and closing the window comprising a lazy-tongs arrangement of le.-

A ships side light consisting oi' a window frame with a resilient lining, a window slidable within the frame and means whereby lthe window can be forced tightly against said resilient lining, in combination iwith Y means -oropening and closing the window comprising a lazy-tongs arrangementoif levers pivoted at one end to the window and at theother end to a fixed bearing, sockets carried by the levers, a screw spinello rotatably mounted in said bearing and engaging said sockets, gears carried by the window trame for rotating the spindle, a lever 'for operatingsaid gears, and a cushioning stop for the window located on the screw spindle.
