Referrin to Fig. 1 the tip lis provided with al'n'ec 2 three ed into one end of a barrel 3 of l or other suitable material of high electrical conductivity. A plug 4 of electrical insulatin material is threaded in the other end of t n barrel and receives a copper sleeve 5 throul h which is threaded a wit a hand wheel 7 of electrical insulating material. Plug 4is provided with an outer annular flange which seats in a corresponding recess in a handle 8 of wood or other suitable material secured about the barrel, and sleeve 5 is connected by a contact plate U with one wire of a cord 10 leading from a plug 11 of suitable type, the other wire of this cord being inserted through a suit- Bpeclcatlon of Letters Patent.

The ti 1 1s provided with an axial .bore 12 exten ing from the inner end of..ne ck 2 this boreqcommunicating at its outer end with a concentric bore of less 'diameter which receives a relatively short electrode 13 of carbon frictionally secured therein. A carbon electrode 14 of real: length relative to electrode 13' fits snugly in tube 6 so as to be frictionall held thereby. This electrode fits snugly t rough an annulus 15 of insulating and fire proof material secured in barrel 3 a short distance from the tip 1. The length of the arc may be varied by rotating tube 6 thus iving accurate control of the heating of t e tip. This also provides means for accommodating wearing of the electrodes. Electrode 14 may be adjusted in tube 6 by means of the instrument shown in Fig. 2, as it wears away at its` inner end.
In the modified form, barrel 3 is threaded into tip 1, the end of the barrel pressing tightly against an annular flange 1-7 of an electrode holder 18 Aseated in the tip. This holder carries the shorter carbon electrode 19 frictionally secured therein, the inner end of which 1s spaced from the longer electrode'20 fr ictionallyy secured in aholder 21 carried by a head 22 of electrical insulating material slidable in a slotted tube 23 extendinn` centrally of barrel 3. This tube is provided with an enlarged outer end element 24 fitting snugly through a anged sleeve 25 of insulating material secured to handle 8. Element 24, and c nsequently tube 23, is held against movement through the sleeve by an outer flange 26 positioned adjacent the outer end of the sleeve, and a nut 27 threaded on the tube adjacent the inner end of the sleeve. Member 24 is provided with an annular groove 28 which receives the inner portion of a brush 29 mounted in a bore extending radially of the sleeve and recciving one wire 30 of a cord 31, this wire being electrically connected to electrode 20A By this means the tube and barextends through a bore in handle 8 and is y connected to barrel 3.
The outer ends of the arms of head 22 are groove-.d to form/threads 22'l which n re adapted to engage similar threads 33 formed on the inner surface of barrel 3 for 'a por` tion of the length thereof. A cap -34 of* elec; trical insulatin material is secured by a screw 35 over t e outer end of tube 23, this cap being provided with an inner squared lug -iitting into a corresponding recess in the 'outer end of .the tube. By turning cap 34 the head 22, .and consequentlyelectrode 20, may be adjusted so as to vary the length of'the are between the electrodes as conditions `ma require. 1 i y As'willbe understood as suggested herein, there may be 'slight c anges made in the construction and arrangement of` the details of our invention without departing from the'eld and scope of the same, and we intend to include all such variations, as fall .within-thezscope of the appended claims in this a plication in which the preferire( forms on y of our invention are disclosed.
