UNITED STATES GEORGE W. KELLOGG, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
PUMP.
To all whom if may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE W7. KnLLocc,
a citizen ot the United States of America, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pumps, of which the following is a speciiication.
My invention relates to pumps of the multiple cylinder type, and is particularly adapted to three cylinder hand pumps, although it is also applicable to power pumps and to structures involving more than three cylinders.
The purpose of the invention is to pro. vide a practical construction, with parts se constructed as to malte it possible to manu` facture and assemble at a. minimum expense, A further purpose ot the improvement is te afford a mechanism which is extremely sinn ple, having the fewest possible number ci parts, and also possessing a high degree of operating eiiiciency. Y
The manner in which these and other pur poses are accomplished will be apparent from the following detailed description, in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, the novel features being clearly pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.
' The drawing is a sectional View, illustrating a practicall embodiment of my improvements.
The drawing illustrates a hand pump of three cylinder type, but it is to be understood that the invention is not limited by this particular disclosure, and my improve ments can be applied to other types and forms of pumps as well, and the present dis-1 closure is intended merely to illustrate one instance of a practical application oli the invention.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, A designates a central cylinder and B and B are outer cylinders',` disposed on opposite sides of the central cylinder A. These several cylinders are mounted upon a base C, and to this end, the base is provided with integral extensions D, D', which Jform pockets to receive the lower ends of the several cylinders,
Y Cooperating with the upper ends or' cylinfiere B, B', is a head E which is prefer Specification of Letters Patent.
Application tiled December f1, 1919.

l'ably integral and provided with a central opening to permit it to pass over the central cylinder A. Suitable packing` material is arranged about the upper cylinders B, B and the adjacent surfaces oi` the head E, and in order to hold the several parts in their proper assembled relationship, securing means are provided. which cooperate with the central cylinder A and with the head ,E and base C, said securing means acting to retain the central and also the outer cylinders in engagement with the base and the head.
To accomplish this, the central pocket of the base C, which is formed by the projection D', is threaded interiorly and the lower end of the central cylinder A is correspondingly threaded to engage the pocket and hold the central cylinder A tightly engaged with'the base. The outer cylinders B, B lit loosely into the corresponding pockets oi the base, and are held in the vfollowing manner. The upper end of the central cylinder A is also threaded exteriorly to receive a correspondingly threaded cap F and the cap F engages the upper surface of the head E. llhus, the cap F forces the head E tightly against the outer cylinders B, B" into tight engagement with their pockets or" the basey C, the central cylinder being held tightly engaged .with the base by its threaded' connection already described. It will be seen, therefore, that after the central cylinder is secured to the base by its threaded connection, or any other suitable instrumentality, the remaining cylinders are held in place with the head tightly engaged 4thereon by the cap F. While this particular means is' an extremely simple and practical way of assembling, other devices can be used which will accomplish the purpose with equal et fectiveness. i
rlhe central cylinder A, is provided in its wall with the opening a, as usual in this general type oi pump and the integral head E has provided therein passages b which es-V tablish communication between the openings a in the central cylinder and the upper ends ot the outer cylinders B, B. Air enters the outer cylinders through the openings c, passing around pistons Gr, and is compressed by the latter andV forced into the central cylinder, during the upward reference to a particular embodiment, the
novel construction may be variously modified and changed without departing from` the underlying features of the improvements, and this application is intended to cover any such constructions as may come within the underlying spirit or' the invention, and the scope oi' the following claims.
