UNITED STA'ILES PATENT OFFICE.
CALEB PAYNE OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO UNITED STATES GYPSUM COMPAW. OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
BUILDING-TILE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 26, 1920.
Application filed December 5, 1918. Serial No. 265,399.
Illinois, have invented certain new and use-' ful Improvements in Building Tiles,'0f
which the following is a description.
My invention applies more particularly to tiles constructed of gypsum products adapted for use in roof construction. It has for its object the construction of a tile for the purpose stated which shall possess sufficient strength to reliably perform the functions required, and which shall provide more reliable means for the engagement and support of the contiguous tiles going to make up such a roof.
To this end my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described, and more particularly pointed out same being partly in section to showthe construction;
Fig. 2 is a section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a cross section on line 44 of Fig. 1; a
Fig. 5 is a top plan view of one of my improved tiles;
Fig. 6 is a bottom plan view of the same;
Fig. 7 isan edge view of the same; and
Fig. 8 is an endview taken from the right of Fig. 7. i
In the drawings, 1 represents a tile preferably formed from gypsum products and recessed on the bottom faces as at 2 in Figs. 4 and 6. The tile is preferably strengthened by suitable reinforcing means, for illustration by reinforcing rods 3 longitudinally extending through the depending edges of the tile below the medial plane, and at the ends bent upward and backward as at 4 to firmly lock the ends of the reinforcing rod in place. The tile upon its-upper surface, along either one or both edges of the same, is recessed as at 5 for the purpose of filling 'in a suitable cement when the tile are laid in place, to. serve to fill the crack and tend to make the roof water tight. The nature'- of the cement may also tend to unite the tile into a homogeneous mass. The ends of the tile are similarly constructed to receive a closing cement as at 7.
The tile when formed into a roof are preferably supported near the ends by suitable transverse metal beams 8, rendering the roof fire proof. In actual practice it is found that metal beams of the character shown frequently warp in rolling, so that in some instances the ends of meeting tiles do not rest equally upon the upper surface of the beam. For the purpose of providing adequate and effectual support for the ends of both the meeting tiles and to make an improved connection between them, I form the body of my tile near the upper and lower surfaces so as to extend longitudinally in opposite directions as at 9, 10. Preferably near the medial plane of the tile is provided a supporting ledge 11 on the extension 10, extending substantially parallel to the upper surface of the tile. On the cooperating part of the end 9 a mating part 12 is pro vided so that the end 10,'firmly resting upon the beam 8, insures a support for the end 9 of the contiguous tile.
Since articles of this character are liable to chip, it is desirable that acute or right angles should be avoided as far as possible in the meeting ends of the tiles, and to accomplish this, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, the vertical faces 13, 14 respectively are connected to the ledge 11 and the cooperating part 12 by inclined or obtuse faces 15, 16 respectively. It will thus be seen that the meeting ends of the contiguous tiles are mating, and that one of the tiles aids in the support of the meeting end of the contiguous tile. In practice it has been found that even in cases where the beam 8 is warped to such an extent that the tile at the right, shown in Fig. 3, has very slight, if any, bearing upon the beam, the support of the mating tile is found sufficient for the purposes of the roof construction.
It is obvious that the particular configuration of the mating ends may be modified to a considerable extent without departing from the spirit of my invention, the main object and purpose being to provide a tile of suflicient strength for the purpose and supply adequate auxiliary support to the overlapping tile' over and above the sup ort that may be secured upon the beam 8. lsothat the meeting edges of the upper surface may be united with a suitable cement.
Having thus described my invention, it is obvious that various immaterial modifications may be made in the same without dearting from the spirit of my invention; iience I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact form, construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described, or uses mentioned except in so far as I may be limited by the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A building tile comprising a main body part provided with end extensions near its upper and lower surfaces to constitute meeting supporting ends of contiguous tiles at one end, and reinforcing rods extending longitudinally of the tile to one side of and parallel with the medial plane of the tile, and having end portions extending into the said end extensions, thence transversely of the tile, and then backwardly and longitudinally into the main body part of the tile.
2. A building tile constructed with the body near the upper and lower surfaces longitudinally extended in opposite directions to constitute meeting supporting ends of contiguous tiles at one end, each end portion of each tile having a longitudinally extending face portion, a vertical face portion at each side of and extending at right angles to the longitudinally extending face portion, and inclined face portions between the longitudinally extending face portion and the vertical face portions.
3. A building tile constructed with the body near the upper and lower surfaces lon= gitudinally extended in opposite directions to constitute meeting supporting ends of contiguous tiles at one end, each end portion of each tile having a longitudinally extending face portion, a vertical face portion at each side of and extending at right angles to the longitudinally extending face portion, and inclined face portions between the longitudinally extending face portion and the vertical face portions, and reinforcing rods extending longitudinally to one side of the medial plane of the tile into the said end extensions of the tile and thence extending vertically of the tile adjacent to and parallel with the inclined face portions of the end extensions of the tile to points above the medial plane of the tile.
4:. A building tile comprising a main body part provided with end extensions near its upper and lower surfaces to constitute meeting supporting ends of contiguous tiles at one end, and reinforcing rods extending longitudinally of the tile to one side of and parallel with the medial plane of the tile, and having end portions extending into the said end extensions, thence transversely of the tile, and then backwardly and longitudinally into the main body part of the tile to the opposite side of the medial plane thereof.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
. CALEB PAYNE.
