UNITED STATES f PATENT, OFFICE.-
HARRISON SHIELDS, or roar DODGE, Iowa] I SiNK-FITTING, 7
Application filed March- 19, 1918. serial No. 223,372.
To all whom it may concern:-
Be it known that I, HARRISON SHIELDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Dodge, in the county of Webster and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sink-Fittings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to sink fittings and the like and the primary object of the invention is to provide an improved means for rigidly securing the bib to the sink back so as to prevent the bib from being pulled outward from the sink back and thereby dispense the ordinary method of strapping the Water pipe to the wall or placing a block of wood between the pipe and sink.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a relatively wide flange formed on the elbow, which connects the bib to the water pipe for engaging the sink back to tightly clamp the bib thereto and thereby eliminate the usual inconveniences associated with fitting bibs to sinks.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a device of the above character, which is durable and efficient in use, one that is simple and easy to manufacture, and one that can be placed upon the market at a reasonable cost.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part thereof, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a bib attached to a sink back in an improved manner showing the sink back in section,
Fig. 2 is a central vertical section through the fitting,
Fig. 3 is an elevation of the elbow connection showing the flange attached thereto, and
Fig. 4 is a similar view of a modified form of the device.
Referring to the drawing in detail wherein similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts, throughout the several views, the numeral 1 generally indicates the improved attachment which is adapted to connect the water pipe 2 to a bib or faucet 3 and to clamp the same to a sink back 4.
The improved attachment consists of the 0rdinary elbow connection 5 having an internally threaded bore 6 for receiving the threaded stem 7 ofthe bib 3, which extends through the sink back 4 as in the ordinarv construction. The elbow 5 has an outwardly extend ng relatively large annular flange 3, which is arranged to engage against the rear face of the sink back 1 and upon threading the stem 7 of the bib 3 into the elbow, the
VVhile"tlie flange formed on the elbow 5 is formed circular as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, it is to be understood that the same can be formed of any desired configuration without departing from the scope of my invention and as shown in Fig. 4, the elbow 5 is provided with a substantially elliptical flange 14 having indentations 15 formed at opposite points on the edge thereof.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawing, it can be seen that an improved sink fitting attachment is provided which will firmly clamp the sink bib in position and prevent the same from being pulled outward from the sink back 4.
In practice, I have found that the form of my invention, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and referred to in the above description, as the preferred embodiment, is the most efficient and practical; yet realizing the conditions concurrent with the adoption of my device will necessarily vary, I desire to emphasize the fact that various minor changes in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may beresorted to, when required without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention as set forth.
' What I claim as new is z- A sink fitting comprising an elbow memher having a flange fixedly mounted thereon and located at the end thereof and having a face lying in a plane parallel with the plane in which the adj aoent end of the elbow member lies and beyond the same, a valve member having a spigot end adapted to enter the elbow member and engage the same there being a flange fixedly mounted upon the valve member at a point between the ends 10 thereof and the flange upon the valve memher having a face juxtaposed with relation to the, face upon the flange of the elbow member, the areas of the faces of the flanges being approximately equal to each other.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature 15 in presence of two witnesses. I
HARRISON SHIELDS.
