Be it known that I, CHARLES F. A. BOLDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at ll lclntosh, in the county of Polk and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Needle-Threaders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to the class of apparel apparatus, and more particularly to a needle threader. i

The primary object of the invention is to provide a needle threader of novel and simple construction, particularly designed for threading darning needles or sacker needles, that is large needles in general and particularlyfor use by those repairing and fasten- 7 i11 sacks of cloth for containing various and i Fig. 5 is a horizontal or longitudinal secu articles of merchandise.

A further object of the invention is to provide an improved needle threader having means for holding a needle innovel relation to a threading device capable of adjustment to suit needles of various sizes, and to provide in conjunction with a plate forming the body of the device, a cutter for thread, string, cord or twine used.

It will thus be seen that the hook 26 through the medium of the shank thereof, can be adjusted horizontally or longitudinally of the plate 10 and disposed above said hook is a spring 34 comprising a section of spring steel wire or the like rebent intermediate its ends and having the extremities thereof extended in opposite directions, as shown at 35 to project through a slot 36v in the plate 10 above theslot 32 and clamping jaws 29, preferably rearwardly thereof. The opposedportions of the spring extend-upon opposite sides of the plate, the inwardly projecting extremities 35 being located one ahead of the other and positioned in overlapping relation through the slot 36, as is clearly shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings. In the threading operation, the plate of the device is held in one hand between the thumb and forefinger and the end of the thread between the second and third finger and run through one of the open guide hooks on top of the instrument or plate. The thread is then extended between the hook 36 and spring 3 to engage beneath the overhan ing or )ro'ectin )ortion of said,

spring 34- and thereafter pressed slightly so as to be caused to enter between said spring and the hook 26 until the thread is above the hook and against the needle, which latter is passed between the spring clamp so that the eye will pass over the hook 26, the needle being so mounted prior to running the thread or cord between the hook and the spring as specified. Now with the thread drawn downwardly toward the lower end of the needle, that is the pointed end, and on manipulating the device, the eyeof the needle is caused to'move over the hook and by reason of the fact that the thread is engaged in one of the notches 33 in said hook, the thread will be held on the hook 26, while the eye moves over the same, thereby efiec- In order to hold the tively threading the needle quickly and accurately without the usual annoyance by the customary method of threading. The device is made in various sizes, but one size will accommodate needles as small as a small size darning needle and as large as a medium size sack needle, without interfering with the threading operation. Also, by adjusting the hook and spring, as previously specified, the device may be made to accommodate needles of different sizes and as the inner endof the hook 26, that is the inner end of the shank portion 25 thereof, is received within a slot 38, said hook is eifectively held in position.

From the foregoing description taken in ronnecti'on with the accompanying drawings, it is thought that a clear and comprehensive understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of my invention may be had, and while I have shown and described the device as-embodying a specific structure, I desire that it be understood that such changes may be made in said structureas do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. A needle threader comprising a substantially rectangular plate, outwardly flaring clamping members secured upon opposite sides of the plate and projecting from one edge thereof to receive a needle therein, said plate having vertical slots providing intermediate portions bent outwardly, a flat hook having a shank portion extending through said offset portions having opposed recesses at its inner end, means for clamping and adjusting saidshank longitudinally of the plate, said hook having an upturned portion with notches at its inner edge and a spring comprising a U-shaped member with its bight portion disposed above the hook and extending upon opposite sides of the plate, and clamping means cooperative with the'aforesaid clamping means to secure said spring in position.

2. A needle threader comprising a platelike body, means carried by the body for holding a needle adjacent to one edge thereof, said plate having loop portions near one edge thereof, a hook having a shank adjustable in said loopl portions, said hook being flatand projecting from one edge to receive the eye of the needle thereover, said hook having a notched edge portion disposed toward the plate, said plate having a slot therethrough in the direction of the shank of the hook, clamping members disposed upon opposite sides of the plate and having slots therein, said clamping members engaging the shankto permit adjustment of'the latter longitudinally, said plate also having a slot therein above said first mentioned slot, a spring including a section of spring metal bent intermediate its ends with the bight a clamping screw engaged through said portion thereof disposed upon opposite sides clamping members and plate, for binding 10 of'the hook and directed upwardly over the said parts or permitting adjustment or resame, said spring having inwardly directed moval thereof as desired.
