1 0 all 10/: am it may concern:
e it known that l, CLARENCE A. limits,
a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invened a certain new and useful Improvement in Folding Auto-Beds, of which the following is a specification.
1 invention relates to improvements in folding auto beds for camping purposes wherein a transversely hinged frame and mattress thereon operate in conjunction with securing and supporting means for effec tively retaining the mattress and frame in an operative or a folded position.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide an improved folding auto bed.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide an improved device of the character described which shall be simple and effective in operation and construction and having a maximum efficiency.
A still further object of the present invention is to provide improved means for automatically retaining bed and other clothing in position when the mattress and frame therefor are in an upright and folded position said means also operating to support one end of a shelter or the like. 7
@ther objects will hereinafter more fully appear.
I accomplish these several objects by means of the improved device disclosed in the drawings forming a part of the present specification wherein like characters of reference are used to designate similar parts throughout the said specification and draw ings, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a motor vehicle disclosing my device attached thereto 'in a folded position;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation of the device set up or unfolded for use, the dotted lines indicating the several folded positions;
Fig. is a side elevation disclosing the position of the device after the first fold;
Fig. 41 is a side elevation of the device in a fully folded position;
Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view taken along the line 5-5 of Fig. 2, in the direction indicated; and
Fig. 6 is a plan view of the frame with the mattress removed, disclosing the manner in which the same is attached to the running board of a motor vehicle.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 is used to designate a'inotor to the running boa rd 2 of which are secured a pair of members having bearings 4; to receive one end of a bed frame 6, hinged transversely on a median line as at 7, and likewise provided with vertically disposed extensions 8 provided with latches 9, the purpose of which will hereinafter be more fully set forth.
The frame members 6 are provided with upwardly curved ends 5 offset at the extreme endthereof to form a pivotal hinge 7 said offset ends 5 being adapted to prevent movement of the outer member 6 beyond the plane defined by the inner members 6 when in eX- tended position. The upwardly curved ends 5 of frame 6 are adapted to maintain said members 6 in spaced relation when in the folded position as disclosed in Figs. 8 and 4 of the drawings, whereby suficient room is provided for inclosing mattress and bedding within the folded bed.
The frame 6 is provided with gravity actuated legs or supports 11 at the pivotal or hinged portions 7 and similar legs or supports 12 adjacent the foot said frame 6, said supports 11 and 12 being actuated by gravity when the frame 6 is being unfolded to assume vertical positions and thereby support the hinged frame 6 when lowered into an operative position as disclosed in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
A suitable flexible resilient spring mattress ll is secured to the frame 6 and adapt ed to fold therewith and also to support a suitable mattress 16 which mattress 16 is also hinged transversely on a median line and coaxial with the hinge 7 of the frame 6.
Hingedly mounted adjacent the foot of the frame 6 is an offset inverted U-shaped member 17 whose transverse connecting portion 18 is adapted to support one end of a suitable shelter 19 whose other end may be connected to the upper end of the members 8 as disclosed in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
The head end of the frame 6 is pivotally mounted within the bearings 4 of the members 3 which bearings & are spaced inwardly from the edge of the running board 2 so that said edge may serve as a fulcrum for the frame 6 thereon and thereby tend to support the said frame 6 in the event that the gravity actuated supports 11 and 12 should fail to operate properly.
Latches 21 are pivotally connected to each side of the frame 6 and adjacent the head end thereof and adapted to engage lugs 22 on the foot end of the frame 6 when folded whereby said frame 6 may be effectively retained in a folded position as disclosed in Figs. 8 and 1 of the drawings.
In operation the frame 6 is extended and supported in a horizontal position by means of the gravity actuated legs or supports 11 and 12. The U-shaped member 17 is moved to a vertically disposed position to support one end of the shelter 19 as disclosed in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
The bed clothing, not shown, is placed upon the mattress 14 in the usual manner.
In folding the device the shelter 19 is first removed and the Ushaped member 17 is laid fiat upon the mattress 16 with the t *ansverse portion 18 of said member 17 lying coaxial with the hinged portion 7 so that when the foot portion of the frame 6 is folded over the head portion thereof said transverse portion 18 will lie within the fold of the mattress 16 and the bed clothes thereon. Suitable clothes hangers 28 may be provided from which to suspend wearing apparel, and said apparel may be folded within the bed clothes, and mattress 16, when folded.
\Vhen the foot portion of the frame 6 is folded over the head portion thereof the latches 22 are engaged-with the lugs 22 on the foot portion of said frame 6 to secure said frame 6 in a folded position. disclosed in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
The folded frame (3 with the mattress 1 5 and other clothing therein is then moved around the pivotal points of the bearing, of the members 8 until a vertical or upright position is assumed in which position the bed clothing and mattress will be suspended and retained in position by the transverse portion 18 of the member 17. The folded mattress 16 and frame 6 are effectively secured in this position by means of latches 3 on the vertical portion 8 of the members 23 as disclosed in Fig. l of the drawings.
As the folded mattress 16 and frame 6 are moved to the final or vertical position the legs 11 and 12 are actuated by gravity to substantially coincide with the side portions of the frame 6 and are thereby automatically folded into position with the folding of the mattress and frame.
It is obvious from the foregoing that I have provided a new and improved folding auto bed as well as improved means for retaining bed and other clothing in a proper position within said folded bed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim. as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A folding auto bed comprising a frame formed from tubular members provided with upwardly curved ends hingedly con nected on a transverse median line at the curved ends, said ends being slightly offset in a transverse direction for limiting movement at said hinged connection; gravity ac tuated supports pivotally mounted'upou the frame to support the same above the ground; a resilient mattress supporting element mounted upon the frame; a mattress mounted upon said supporting element nd hinged coaxial with the hinge of the frame; means for retaining the folded ma: within the folded frame when in vertical position and means for hingedly connect one end of the frame to the running bo of a motor vehicle or the like and for maintaining the folded frame and mattress in an upright position on said running board.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my signature.
