Since the railroads of the United States have been placed Linder the control ol the United States Railroad Administration, cerhave been adopted for all railroads and among others standards for the draft gears. Under the regulations ol the Railroad Administration, cars must be built with a standard .spacing of 24% between iront land rear setsoi stops `so that these stops will accommodate the ordinal friction gears now on the mar het. he spacing of' 243 -is considerably 'shorter than that heretofore required by standard tandem spring gears and consequently the former types of tandem spring gears vcannot be interchanged with the friction gears emplo ed wi' h the standard spacing of 24 here are numerous railroads in the United States which, rior to the passing ofy control to the IRai-road Administration, had made spring gears standard and which object to the use of friction gears. With this arrangement, upon either inward or outward movement of the draw bar, one of the members A will be held stationary and the other will move relatively toward it so that the springs will be compressed simultaneously, each between a main end wall of one member A and the intermediate follower section of the other member. To prevent over-compression of the springs, shoulders 22 are' formed on each member A in alinement with the inner ends of the arms of the other member A, the shoulders eing so located as to be normally spaced from the arms of the opposite member a distance corresponding to the permissible'compression of the springs. It will be noted that upon full compression, an extremely rigid column of rectangular form is provided 'to absorb the ultimate shocks. Y
As will be understood by those skilled in the art, the various parts of each member A will be substantially braced by ribs and flanges such as indicated, for instance, by F ig. 3. It is not deemed necessary to enter into a detailed description of these strengthening flanges and ribs inasmuch as the same may he varied.

2.' ln a tandem draft 'rigging` the combination withdraft sills having front and rear sets of stops, a draw bar, and a single pocket yoke, of a pair of like follower members, and a'pair of tandem arranged springs, each of said follower members being of boxlike form and having a main end vall, integrally spaced' longitudinally extending arms, and an inner integral narrow follower, the arms of said members being pertially overlapped and slidable relatively to each other, the narrow' follower at the inner end of one member sliding between the arms of the other member, each spring bearing entirely upon the narrow follower of one member and the main outer end of the other member. In a tandem draftv rigging, the combination with draft sills having front and rear stop-acting means, of a air of castings, andtandem arranged springs, each of said castings being-of substantially hollow box-like form and having a main transversely extending end wall, spaced longitudinally extending side arms, and an inner wall, said side arms being of reduced height at their inner ends and, when assembled, the narrower portions of the side arms of one casting overlying the narrower portions of the arms oi the other casting, the inner wall of each casting being of reduced width for a part of its height and adapted to slide within the arms of the other casting, each soring being interposed between the inner wall one casting andthe main end wall or' the other casting.
