DEVICE TO PREVENT OVER-WINDINGSPRINGS.
' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 12, 1920.
Application filed March 25, 1920. Serial N0. 368,770.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. SHIVELY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brookville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Devices to Prevent Over-Winding Springs; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this appllcation, and represent, in
Figure 1. a side view partly in sectlon of a device to preventover winding SPIIHYS,
constructed in accordance with my inven-' tion.
Fig. 2. a detached side view ofthe inner end of a crank shaft with disk and clutch ring connected therewith,
Fig. 3. an inner face view of the same. Fig. 4. a detached side View of the outer end of a spring shaft with clutch ring mounted thereon.
Flg. 5. a face View of same.
This invention relates to an improvement clutch, which will when the spring is wound 1 to a predetermined extent, be turned to a position which permits the parts to slip one upon the other, so that further movement of the crank shaft will have no effect on the spring shaft, and the invention consists in the construction. and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.
In carrying out my invention I fix a disk 6 on the crank shaft 7 andprojecting in-- wardly from diametrically opposite points of the disk are arms 8 and 9 between which is pivotally mounted a contact ring 10 normally held in an inclined position by a spring 11, and limited in its movement in one direction by a post 12 extending inward from the disk 6. The spring shaft 13 is arranged in line with the crank shaft 7 and pivotally mounted on the outer end of the spring shaft is a contact ring 14 adapted to engage with the ring 10 with which it is held parallel by the action of the spring 11. 7
As herein shown the rings are held in engagement with each other by a cage or housing 15, bearing at its inner end upon the shaft 13 against a collar 16 thereon, and secured at its outer end to the disk 6. When the crank shaft 7 is turned, the engagement of the rings, due -to their inclined position, will cause the spring shaft 13 to be turned to wind the spring. As the spring approaches its fully wound position, the contact rings will be turned to a vertical position owing to the resistance of the spring on the shaft 13, and when the rings assume a vertical ornearly vertical position, they will slip one upon the other, sothat a continued movement of the crank shaft will have no effect upon the spring shaft; As the spring unwinds, the spring 11 will again hold the rings in an inclined position ready for rewinding.
I claim 1. A device to prevent over winding 7 springs, including awinding shaft and a other, and a contact ring mounted pivotally upon the adjacent ends of each of the said shafts and held in contact with each other,
and means to normally hold the rings in inclined position to effect winding of the spring.
2. In a device to prevent over winding springs the combination with the crankshaft of a contact ring connected therewith; I 'a spring shaft in line with said crank shaft,
a contact ringpivotally connected with said spring shaft; means'for holdingsaid rings in engagement with each other, and a spring normally acting to turn the said rings into an inclined position.
3. In a device to prevent over winding springs the combination of a crank shaft, of
a disk fixed thereto, and formed at diametri- I cally opposite points with inwardly projecting arms, a contact ring pivotally mounted crank shaft; a contact ring pivotally conspecification in: the presence of two subnected with the outer end of said. spring scribing witnesses. shaft, and bearing against the ring on the JOHN J. SHIVELY. crank shaft, and a houslng havlng a. beetri 5 ing on the spring shaft and connected with Witnesses:
the disk on the crankshaft. F REDERIC C. EARLE,
In testimony whereof I have signed this J. HAROLDVFLYNNI.
